The university fulfills its land-grant mission of transforming knowledge to practice through technological leadership and by fueling economic growth and job creation locally, regionally, and across Virginia The On-Campus Interviewing (OCI) Program OCI enables you to interview in our comfortable facilities and meet with many students during one campus visit. You may interview for internships, cooperative education positions, and permanent employment positions for graduating students. Policies related to recruiting Career Services endorses the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Principles for Professional Conduct for Career Services and Employment Professionals. We ask employers to be aware of and voluntarily abide by the NACE Principles. Please also be aware of Career Services' Position Statement about Campus Recruiting. University and Career Services weather-related closing policy: if the university closes early, closes for the day, or has a delayed opening, Career Services must do likewise, and that would impact On-Campus Interviewing. When interviews occur Late September to early December Late January early April Dates can be secured throughout the year using our informal process. To schedule your interview dates Reservations begin approximately 10 months before interviews begin, starting in early December for the next academic year. Interview space is limited and may fill quickly. However, even in summer you can still contact us about fall recruiting dates. 5 Steps in the OCI Program process Schedule interview date(s) Provide schedule details Schedule optional information session Review resumes and make candidate selection Conduct one-on-one interviews in Smith Career Services facility The Informal Program If the formal program does not meet your needs, the informal program permits you to visit on shorter notice and during weeks outside the formal program schedule. We will provide interviewing space as available. To participate: Collect resumes from students through means convenient to you: Access resumes on-line through Hokies4Hire. Other sources such as job fairs, resume books, job postings, giving presentations to student groups, unsolicited resumes you have received, etc. Contact our Employer Relations staff to establish an interview date. You will contact your selected students to establish the interview schedule. What to Expect on the Date of Interviews Location of Interviews: All interviews are held in the Smith Career Services Building, 2 nd Floor unless you have made other arrangements. Parking: Park in the Coliseum parking lot (near Washington Street) across the street from the Smith Career Services Building. If you don t have a parking pass be sure to request one when you arrive at the Smith Career Services Building. Check-In Process: Check in at the reception desk on the 2 nd Floor of The Smith Career Services Building. Employer Information Sessions Some employers choose to schedule information sessions, typically the evening prior to an interview day, in order to meet less formally with students and share general information about your organization so that interview time can be spent more effectively. To arrange an information session in Career Services, contact: Employer Relations oci@vt.edu To arrange an information session elsewhere on campus, contact: *The UUSA Event Planning Office: Ms. Sarah Proffitt Event Planner psarah@vt.edu * The Event Planning Office will notify Career Services of your arrangements, so your session can be publicized online through Hokies4Hire. 4

6 Off campus information sessions If you arrange an information session off campus, please notify a member of the Career Services' Employer Relations staff of the location IF you would like for our office to publicize your event online through Hokies4Hire. Publicity to students Employer information sessions are publicized to students on-line through Hokies4Hire Career Services strongly encourages students to attend employer information sessions. We are unable to compel students to attend. We ask employers to be aware that students sometimes have schedule conflicts that prevent them from attending all sessions in which they have an interest. Alcohol Policy Regarding refreshments offered to students attending information sessions, Career Services endorses the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Principles for Professional Conduct which state that "serving alcohol should not be part of the recruitment process." We ask you to voluntarily abide by the NACE Principles. Position Statement about Campus Recruiting and Job Postings by Employer Organizations Expectations of Employers & Students No endorsement of employing organizations is expressed or implied Career Services at Virginia Tech provides and supports opportunities for students to explore and pursue a wide variety of career options. Among the opportunities afforded students are job postings, recruitment visits and career fairs, which bring hundreds of prospective employers including private businesses, non-profit organizations, and government agencies to campus each year. Most of the career fairs on campus are sponsored and hosted by various departments, student organizations and colleges at Virginia Tech. Career Services advertises these events and helps to prepare students to learn the job search skills to be successful at these events. Career Services also hosts prospective employers in our facilities throughout the academic year so that these employers can conduct interviews with students through the On-Campus Interviewing Program, and Career Services enables employers to post jobs for students through Hokies4Hire. Providing space for prospective employers on our public campus, and enabling employers to post jobs, does not imply an endorsement of the missions or activities of any visiting or posting organization. As an academic institution, we strongly encourage students to research information and options in order to make informed employment choices. Expectations of employers Employing organizations that recruit Virginia Tech students are expected to follow the Principles for Professional Practice for Employment Professionals established by the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Students who believe an employer has not acted in accordance with professional standards in the job search process are asked to please contact us to discuss the matter. Expectations of students Career Services expects students who are conducting a job search whether for an internship, a cooperative education position, or a permanent position to begin at graduation to conduct themselves in an ethical and responsible manner. Specifically: Students should attend scheduled interviews. Students should not renege after accepting an employment offer. Employers who believe a student has not acted in accordance with these expectations are asked to please contact us. 5

7 Posting Jobs & Using the Student Search Feature The Hokies4Hire database allows employers to post jobs and conduct student searches. Posting your job is easy and only takes a few minutes. By using the Hokies4Hire database your job openings will be visible to students 24/7/365. There are no fees for posting your job openings. The student search feature allows the employer to search for potential candidates by major, degree, graduation date and other key word searches. After conducting a search you can download or print resumes and contact those students directly. Career Fairs Please note that Career Services sponsors the Connection Co-op and Internship Job Fair, but we do not control or operate the other job fairs held on campus; there are now up to fifteen annual career fairs, each with a unique career focus and sponsor.
