2 FRiends Of the Gifted & Talented SUPER Saturday Class Descriptions 3 D Art Grades: 3-6 Description: Artwork is not just created on flat paper. Students will use a variety of materials to create 3-D art. Each class will include a simple project to get your little artist thinking. We will use paper, clay, found objects, and recycled materials. ACT Prep Grades: 9-11 Description: High stakes tests are daunting for many high school students, however with adequate preparation for and knowledge of the test, students can have confidence that they will reach their goals. With the strategies learned and easily employed, students know that they can conquer their fears with regards to their performance on these tests. Minimum/Maximum: 6/20 Advanced GameStar Mechanic Grades: 3 8 Description: Go deeper into game creation by focusing on level design and developing game spaces! Create and playtest your own and your classmates games. Learn the basics of video game creation! This game-based digital learning platform is designed to teach the guiding principles of game design and systems thinking in a highly engaging and creative environment. Gamestar Mechanic allows students to learn about how systems work and how they can be modified or changed. Students learn to think analytically and holistically, to experiment and test theories, and to consider other people as part of the systems they create and inhabit. Through the game design process, students cultivate skills involving

3 Animation Creation system-based thinking, creative problem solving, art and aesthetics, writing and storytelling, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) Grades: 3 8, Adult Description: Students will be able to explore the art of animation. Our young animators will be able to take cartoon characters that they have created on their own and use them to make animated cartoons using Animation Creator HD app. At the end of the session, cartoons will be posted on the art website (REQUIRED: Students who have taken Cartoon Creations class and/or knowledge of the app Animation Creator HD. Materials: ipad, stylus, and Animation Creator app ($3.99) Limit (10 students) Art for 4 Year Olds Grade: 4 Year Olds Description: Four year old children are curious, playful, and love to try new things. They also love making art. In this class, fantastic fours (and a parent) will get to experiment with a different art material or theme each class. Our focus will be on the process of making art but we will hopefully have some gallery artwork to display too. Art for the Spring & Summer Grades: K - 2 Description: The seasons often inspire artist s creativity. We will use the seasons of Spring and Summer to explore several art techniques and materials. New friendships will be fostered while focusing on the creative process (gluing, cutting, self-expression, and the elements of design). These basic concepts will get your little artist thinking about art vocabulary while giving them an exposure to new artists, materials, and techniques. Arte Espanol Grades: K - 5 Description: The amazing multicultural class will expose children to Spanish language and culture as we complete art projects such as Mexican Talavera Tile Painting, Mexican Papel Picado, Bolivian Masks and more! We ll teach/review vocabulary including: colors, numbers, shapes and basic commands! Beginner GameStar Mechanic Grades: 3 8 Description: Learn the basics of video game creation! This game-based digital learning platform is designed to teach the guiding principles of game design and systems thinking in a highly engaging and creative environment. Gamestar Mechanic allows students to learn 5 about how systems work and how they can be modified or changed. Students learn to think analytically and holistically, to experiment and test theories, and to consider other people as part of the systems they create and inhabit. Through the game design process, students cultivate skills involving system-based thinking, creative problem solving, art and aesthetics, writing and storytelling, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). Beginning Acting Grades: 2-4 Description: Theater movement, creative play, storytelling and improvisation exercises encourage the basic acting skills of imagination, cooperation, and listening.

4 Beginning Chess Grades: 1 8, Adult Description: Chess is one of the world's oldest games. This class is for total beginners. Students learn the chess pieces, how they move, how to checkmate, and the two special moves: castling, and capturing en passant (in passing). Hands-on exercises will be used to reinforce concepts. Chess sets may be purchased from the instructor ($16) or brought from home. No prerequisite - this class is for the student unfamiliar with chess or just learning to play. Bridge Building Grades: 3-8 Description: In this class, students study how bridges are made, learning about different structural designs and the relative strength of each style. Each student will build two bridges and decorate them using their imagination. There are no makeup classes if a building day is missed. This class is for any student interested in building and design. Hot glue guns will be used in this class. Simple knots will be used for one of the bridges, students should know how to tie their shoes. Cartoon Creations Grades: 3-7 Description: In this class, we will explore the world of animation and comic strips. Students will get to create their own unique cartoon characters and settings. Projects will involve comic strips, animation cels, working with cartooning apps on the ipad, and flipbooks. It is VERY possible that you may have the NEXT Walt Disney in your family! No prerequisite this class is for any student interested in learning cartooning. Codes and Ciphers Grades: 3-8 Description: Do you want to stop your little brother from reading your diary? Do you want to feel like a real "secret agent" by passing a coded message between friends? This class will show you many codes and ciphers, from simple letter switching to historic code tools. Students will also learn tips and secrets of breaking many types of codes. Each student takes home everything learned in class, including actual code tools! No prerequisite - this class is for any student interested in keeping or breaking secret messages. Also, we do not endorse passing notes in any classroom setting (except maybe this one). Continuing Knitting Grades: 3 8, adult Description: If you have mastered casting on, binding off, and the simple knit stitch, then this is the class for you! In this class we will focus on purling and simple pattern reading. Students will create a fun project combining all the skills learned. Needles and yarn will be provided. Cupcake Decorating Grades: 3 5 Grades: K 3 Grades: 5 8 Description: Explore the world of icing decorating and fondant and have lots of fun along the way. This class will offer some super colorful, fun, and creative ways to decorate cupcakes. Your child will leave each class with 2 hand decorated cupcakes and the skills to decorate their own at home.

5 Elementary Entomology Grades: K 6 Description: Have a blast exploring insects and the science of entomology! We ll conduct experiments, do simulations and explore anatomy. What food do ants like best? Ladybugs aren t so cute when they re born! How far can a cricket jump? Come play cricket long jump! Is it a butterfly or a moth? Each week we ll examine a different insect! Forensic Science Grades: K - 6 Description: Would you like to learn how to solve crimes or be a detective? Who did it? How did it happen? Do we have any proof? Learn how to analyze evidence just like a forensic scientist! We ll practice our skills by using circumstances that model real life events. Gross Out Chemistry I Grades: K 2 Grades :00-10:50 a.m. Description: Do your kids like to get messy? Introduce them to the science behind the mess! This is a hands on science lab exploring chemistry with safe kitchen chemistry ingredients. Students will build science vocabulary while forming hypothesis, making and recording observations, measuring, making conclusions and lots more! Harry Potter Potions Grades: K - 6 Description: Have you always wanted to attend The Hogwarts School of Magic? You ll love this class! Become a science wizard as you explore the magic of chemistry in fun, educational science labs inspired by the Harry Potter books and movies! High Altitude Weather Balloon Grades: 6-9 Description: In this class, students will study the theory and practice of launching a balloon to the edge of space, predicting where it will land, and learn the procedures for post launch recovery. We will also assemble a camera system and possibly other electronic payloads. The class will assemble one (or more) actual balloon launch systems. The actual launch will be on a date and time to be determined (hopefully from Kankakee airport) subject to weather, student schedules, and the availability of helium. Improvisation Grades: 4-8 Description: Spontaneity, creativity and teamwork are life skills enhanced by learning improvisation. Corporations around the globe use improvisation games for team building, confidence and brainstorming. Have an edge by learning how to create characters and scenes instantly while having a great time exercising your creativity and imagination! Listen for the classroom with the most laughter! Intermediate Chess Grades: 1 9, adult Description: In this class, the chess student is exposed to games from some of the greatest chess players in history as well as tactical lessons composed by Bobby Fischer. With the games, basic ideas are explored as well as tactics, strategies, brilliant checkmates, thee four principles upon which play is built (Space, Time, Force, Pawn Structure), the Center, and the weakest square on the board. There is time after each game is presented for the student to find a partner and play a game. This class is for the student familiar with the material covered in our Beginning Chess class.

6 Lego EV3 Programming Grades: 6 8 Time: Saturdays, 10:00 to 11:50 a.m. (This is a two period class) Description: Let s build an army of EV3 robots, and you can learn to program them. You will be working in teams of two in an interactive process with closed feedback. This is a double session 2-hour class. Intro to Photography Grades: 4 8, adults Description: Discover the world through a different perspective. Each student will have an opportunity to learn and expand on their talents, and see what it takes to elevate images to the next level through discussions and assignments that will be created and critiqued based on what we learn. Students will give an oral presentation of their best work on the last day. Please bring your DSLR and instruction manual to each class. Introduction to Knitting Grades: 3 8, adult Time: Saturdays, 10:00 to 10:50 a.m, Description: Always wanted to learn to knit?? Well here is your chance!! In this basic hands-on class, students will learn casting on, binding off and the basic knit stitch. Students will also work on a simple project. Needles and yarn will be provided. ipad Coding First Steps Grades: 3 8 Description: Coding is arguably the foreign language we all need to learn. Coding is the language of computing and how we create web pages, apps and software. In this coding class we will introduce you to the language of coding with free apps such as Cargo-Bot, Tynker, Hopscotch and Scratch jr. These apps will help us learn about coding and let us start exploring how to build things with code. ipad Coding Next Steps Grades: 3 8 Description: Coding is arguably the foreign language we all need to learn. Coding is the language of computing and how we create web pages, apps and software. In this next step of coding we will explore multiple coding platforms including Code Monster for Crunchzilla (exploring the basics of Java), Scratch, Tynker, and others. Students in this class will explore further into the creation side of coding. Jazzy Jewelry Grades: 1-8, Adult Description: Fun and fabulous, this class teaches the fundamentals of jewelry making with a flair for the creative. Students will experience using tools and terminology of modern day designers to create 3 to 5 innovative adornments they can t wait to show their friends. Wire wrapping, bead weaving, metalsmithing, and basic stringing techniques will be used. Rings, bracelets, pins, pendants, earrings and necklaces the possibilities are endless. All tools are included. No previous jewelry-making experience required. Taught by juried Illinois Artist, Rose Jarecki, designs will focus on unique, inspired form, colors and textures.

7 Jr. Chefs Grades: 4 8 Grades: 3 5 Grades: K :00 10:50 a.m. 11:00-11:50 a.m. Description: In this hands-on class, students create a variety of dishes tailored to their age level and interests. Each student receives a cookbook of class recipes. No prerequisite - this class is for any student interested in cooking, but without much experience. Peanut products and different meats (no fish) will be used in this cooking and baking class. Note: Parents are expected to volunteer to help for one of the five Saturdays, and a sign-up sheet will be available at the first class Lego Engineering I Grades: K 2 nd Grades 3 rd - 6 th 11:00-11:50 a.m. Description: Children have a blast building with Legos. Now they have an opportunity to learn about the science behind what they re building! We ll explore concepts such as modeling in 2 and 3 dimensions, testing and evaluating designs, meeting design constraints, conducting investigations and so much more! Pastel Painting I & II Grades: 3-8, Adults Description: Learn the techniques Degas, Cassatt and Monet used to create their beautiful pastel masterpieces. Students of all ages will learn how to create wonderful paintings with pastels. You will be introduced to drawing, shading, color mixing and various techniques for creating art with pastels. The final project will be suitable for framing. Each student will receive a complete set of pastels and supplies. Past students will continue to advance in ability and technique. Presentations Like a Pro! Grades: 3-8 Description: This class is geared to students struggling with speaking in front of the class or organizing their reports. Come away from the class with confidence for how to stand and speak clearly; how to structure a report and memorize it; the right and wrong way to use note cards or power point; and how to leave nerves at the door! Students will work on fictional presentations as well as those they are making in school or for the science fair, SIT conference, etc. Always fun and interactive with games to rid your oral report of umms, and, you know and like! Silk Screen Printing Grades: 3-8, Adults Description: Learn the art of silk screen printing. Each week, silkscreen your own designs on cards, tee shirts, and more. No prerequisites World of Monsters Grades: 3-8 Description: Kids will create monsters from the book PaperTop Monsters while learning about geography and expanding on their creative writing and team building skills. Students get to keep the monsters and the short stories they create. There will be brainstorming sessions during class. Students will learn something unique to the country of their monsters origin.

8 Yoga in Motion Grades: K - 3 Description: Have fun, stretch your body while learning yoga! Games & songs add to the fun. Dress to move, no jeans please. Yoga is a great way to develop focus, awareness, and coordination. This class stresses increased flexibility and balance as students participate in imaginative poses, games, songs, and relaxation. It's a fun and beneficial class for the whole child - body and mind. No prerequisite - this class is for students interested in having fun and challenge their bodies. Students are asked to bring a yoga mat or beach towel and water bottle.
