1 PORTABLE ANIMATION WORKSHOPS PAW changing classrooms one frame at a time HOSTED BY THE QUICKDRAW ANIMATION SOCIETY

2 A travelling animation workshop hosted by talented local artists, the Quickdraw Animation Society s Portable Animation Workshop (PAW) brings a fully functioning animation studio into classrooms and other environments throughout Calgary. With its engaging, inquiry based, and dynamic approach to learning, the PAW program is a unique way to develop the objectives of your group. Participants in PAW will learn the basics of animation through hands-on problem solving and creative collaboration with each other and with our instructors. In the process, they ll engage with concepts from the worlds of art, science and mathematics in a fun and supportive environment that can capture the interest of visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners. The PAW program enriches the educational objectives of your school or group through interactive explorations of animation techniques in either half-day or full day programs. Our emphasis is on strengthening 21st Century Learning Skills, particularly collaboration with others, digital literacy and critical thinking. This provides support and development to all areas of the Alberta Education Programs of Study in: Fine Arts, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics. Our instructors have extensive experience with a variety of animation techniques through their own artistic practice, and are skilled in leading learners through experimentation, collaboration and imagination. What Happens? Quickdraw s instructors guide participants through the process of making a short animation using hands-on materials such as paper-cutouts, claymation, hand-drawn figures, 3D toys and even the students themselves, with no drawing skills necessary! Our curriculum will take your classroom through the full process of creating an animated film. These programs focus primarily on stop-motion animation and pixilation (animation of people) for ages 8 and up (Gr. 3 12). However, some accommodations can be made to adapt the workshop to better suit your group s interests and needs. The PAW instructors will create an environment where students feel involved and engaged, and will encourage students to learn by doing. By providing a supportive environment, students feel empowered to make their own decisions, express opinions and become actively involved.

3 Where does it go? Quickdraw s PAW will come to you! Our equipment can travel anywhere you need, including festivals, retreats, classrooms, seminars, summer camps, reserves and more. The program s format is highly flexible, having been used for corporate team-building as well as classroom learning, and can accommodate a range of ages, event formats and schedules How to book a PAW: Please find our Program Request Form at: We would strongly encourage you to book your PAW program at least two weeks before your preferred date. Fill out and the form to outreach@quickdrawanimation.ca. Once the request form is received, we will contact you directly and work with you to better understand your needs and areas of interest. Quickdraw Animation will invoice your school directly, so there is no need to pay in advance. There is a $50.00 cancellation fee for programs cancelled within 48 hours of a booked visit. Travel Expenses Quickdraw is based in Calgary s beltline; travel expenses will be charged according to the distance the instructors need to travel to your school. For all schools outside of the Calgary s city limits, there will be a.54/km charge return trip.

4 Program Pricing: Rates Half Day (3.5 hrs) Full Day (6 hours) Full Week $ $ To be determined with teacher. Please note the following: A single PAW class can accommodate up to 30 students Full day pricing applies to one continuing class only Full week pricing and times are to be negotiated with instructors based on classroom objectives and needs (per class) Classroom teachers are expected to remain in classroom at all times The above rates include one instructor and one assisting instructor Programs Get Animated! Curriculum Connections: Light and Shadow (Science), Art, Mathematics, Language Arts. Skills: Creativity and Innovation, Collaboration, Media Literacy, Problem Solving. Play it Again, Puppets (Grades 4 and Up) Incorporating storytelling and collaboration, students become authors and directors by integrating reduce, re-use and recycle in creative puppet building with re-used and recyclable materials. (Grade 3 and up) Other types of animation, such as Claymation and flipbooks, are available upon request.
