PBL with the use of Technology Davinderjit Sandhu My Blog:
Strategies for using an IPad in the classroom One group works with the ipad (rotation) while the rest of the class continues with classwork ipad is connected to the projector so all students can see Students can take turns coming up to the ipad while it is connected to the projector
Earphone adapter
Strip Design Explain Everything ColarMix Kid in Story My Storybook Maker Chatterpix My Popplet imovie Powtoon Slideshow/Keynote Presentation
Strip Design Comic strip design Great for individual or group work Students add own text Can add photos or drawings Save your image to Camera Roll from any app and import into strip design
Simple comic strip using a story format Events in chronological order Seasonal events: fall, winter, spring, summer Life cycle : Animal, plants Teach grammar: Verbs, prepositions, adjectives, etc. Math: using manipulatives to add or subtract. Take pictures or photos and label. Students can then add bubble with a problem solving question or addition/subtraction sentence.
Students chose a room that they then produced in a shoebox. They labelled the furniture. Created a pet (can be done with play doh, modelling clay, etc.) They placed their pet in different places in their room and took a picture. They wrote a sentence using a prepositional phrase to explain where the pet was in the room. We then imported the images into Strip Design where they used written language They then imported the pictures into Explain Everything where they used oral language.
Explain Everything Great app for oral language development Draw and talk at the same time Import pictures from Camera Roll and record speech while the picture is showing Add text to the photos and drawings Colour drawings although colours are limited
ColAR Mix Excellent for seasonal holidays and writing prompts Object coloured comes alive and moves around Can take picture with the student Not able to make a movie. Download colouring sheets from
Great for enhancing ideas for writing. Can take pictures with the objects moving and dancing when looking through the ipad. 'If you finish colouring the sheet, you'll see magic happen. Connect the ipad to the projector so all the students can see the objects moving and dancing.
Begin with the 3D moving image as a prompt for creating the activity. Prompts: The pumpkins went off the paper and danced around the classroom! What happens? Where do the pumpkins go? What do the pumpkins do? How do you feel? Have students draw on ipad doodle app or paper to lay out their ideas. Can begin with a group/class brainstorm and then students can individualize their work or work in small groups. Once visual is drawn, they begin using the pictures they have produced to write their story of the alive pumpkins. These can then be imported into Strip Design or Explain Everything. Explain Everything is great to use if the student becomes the pumpkin and is talking in first person narrative. The writings and pictures can be displayed with the 3D picture - around or under it.
Great App. Great for building oral language skills. Draw a picture and tell/explain the story at the same time or one student can draw and one student talks. Math: draw addition sentence (eg: 4 apples, and 3 oranges. How many in total?) Journal entry for struggling writers. Projects/ideas with the use of pictures or photos. Can to parents. Add to classroom blog.
Kid in Story
Kid in Story Produce a story with own words and sentences Add children in the story Record your voice when reading the sentences written in the story book Produce own books around chosen topic
Great App for making books for the classroom. Books: Alphabet, math, story, etc. Can Google images and save to Camera Roll. Import into App and add child's picture. Learning about Egypt, can use a picture of the pyramids with your student(s) in the picture. Teacher: 'You are in Egypt by the Pyramids, how do you feel? What do you see?' Can use app for many different topics: Fairy Tales, Non-fiction writing, Poetry, Socials, Math, Research...
My Storybook Maker Great app for producing own stories. Can produce a class book or individual books. Pictures can be included Add sentences that relate to the picture. Photos can be taken of students' work and highlighted or drawn on. On the page: draw, type, add stickers, add/change colour, choose backgrounds. Record your voice.
Book maker Be creative with books: Alphabet Class books Field trips Projects Topics/content Math: Problem solving, computation skills, place value. Assign a research task: a pair of students can work on one page. Put there ideas, pictures, information on the page. Each group of student is assigned one part of a topic and they are responsible for one page each. Socials: places, mapping, Greek gods, etc. LA: Writing pieces can be typed and pictures added into the storybook maker.
Example: Language Arts: Topic: Jillian Jiggs by Phoebe Gilman Phoebe Gilman is taking her book around the world. She is advertising her book and is going on a tour. Countries she will visit. Packing list. What are the necessities? Students can create the books - Images of the different places with child s picture in it. Interview: Student interviews Phoebe Gilman; what questions would they ask? Scene or actual act of the event that Phoebe has planned around the world.
Chatterpix Student brought in knitting skills Took the leader role to teach the group They knitted bookmarks Took a picture of the bookmark in an open book Uploaded the picture into the ipad app Chatterpix
Students write about their bookmark as though they are the bookmark, are alive, and have feelings. They draw the line for the mouth The image begins to talk The students read their writing piece and record. The results: A bookmark in a book explaining his/her feelings and how they became a bookmark.
My Popplet
My Popplet Great for brainstorming, categorizing, family tree, etc. Can choose different colours for the boxes to organize Can resize the boxes Link the boxes to each other and make webs Add writing or pictures Can draw the pictures - Choose different
Organize information researched. Use visuals to help students who are struggling with written output. Draw the pictures. Write words or sentences. Students receiving ELL or LSS support could also benefit Use as a graphic chart to plan writing fiction or non-fiction. Use with a projector to organize ideas and plan writing or activity with the whole class. Pre-plan for an activity
imovie Great to put photos and videos together. Produce great slideshows. Add captions to the slideshows or video clips. Cut out clips that are not needed or too long. Can record speech within the slideshow. Add music already in imovie or add your own music. Almost everything you do can be imported into imovie.
Events can be placed in sequence and captions added. Field trip events can be put together by students. Pictures can be googled and saved to Camera Roll and imported into imovie. Sentences can then be added to the slideshow. Students can speak and record their voices. Can be used for story telling. Alphabet movies. Can sing the song with slideshow of pictures, letters or students. Use students to lie on floor and make the letters. Take pictures and produce a slideshow. Math: timetable, computation, fractions. All these concepts can be drawn by students in a drawing app and saved to Camera Roll. They then can be imported into imovie. Record a movie of your students singing a song and play when they sing the song.
Powtoon 2D Presentation Characters move and hands draw or write Hands move characters Each individual step requires choosing characters, actions, and timing.

Weekly Slideshow/Keynote Projects Assign a small group a research project. Have students use the ipad to research, collect data, use certain apps assigned to organize and show information. They import everything into Keynote and prepare a presentation. Doesn't have to be a big project. Students can also present class projects as it doesn't have to be extra projects. Those students who do not want to talk in front of the class can be in charge of the ipad and change the presentation slides.
Bringing students knowledge and experience into the classroom Students have a wealth of information and knowledge and most often they are willing to share. They become leaders without even knowing it because they understand the concept or skill The develop their language skills and also the process and order in which instructions have to be given for accurate results.
