1 SD 308 Elementary Summer School Course Offerings Dates: June 8 th June 26 th Hours: 8:30a.m. 11:30a.m. Location: Churchill Elementary School 520 Secretariat Lane Oswego, IL Contact: Please contact Casey O Connell, Elementary Summer School Coordinator with any questions at (630) or coconnell@sd308.org Registration Dates: Online Registration only- Course fees: 1 hour course: $ hour course: $ hour course: $ Tuition: Tuition is waived for all students that qualify for waived fees. If this applies to your student, please designate on the enrollment form. Students will not be allowed to attend class until tuition is paid in full. Payment: Credit card ( or by check made out to SD308 and mailed to the address listed above. Transportation: Bus transportation will be available for students. The bus schedule will be based on enrollment and interest and communicated to families by June 4 th by the Transportation Department. Stops will be at or near all 308 schools, additional stops will be considered based on enrollment. Bus transportation will be provided to school for 8:30 a.m. classes and home after 11:30 a.m. classes only.

2 Breakfast: Breakfast will be served beginning at 8:00 a.m. daily. If your child is attending school for all three hours, they are encouraged to bring a snack.

3 ELEMENTARY COURSE DESCRIPTIONS 2015 Kindergarten Language Arts Review and Reinforcement Cost: $160 Eligibility: Students that completed Kindergarten in the school or students that performed on or below level in reading and/or writing reading and writing strategies including: sight words, phonics and decoding skills, vocabulary, basic comprehension, and letter formation and sentence structure. Classroom activities will be differentiated to meet the needs of the learners in the classroom Kindergarten Math Review and Reinforcement Cost: $80 Eligibility: Students that completed Kindergarten in the school or students that performed on or below level in math math skills including: counting, recognizing and identifying numbers, adding and subtracting numbers, place value, and identifying patterns. Classroom activities will be differentiated to meet the needs of the learners in the classroom. First Grade Language Arts Review and Reinforcement Cost: $160 Eligibility: Students that completed First Grade in the school or students that performed on or below level in reading and/or writing reading and writing strategies including: sight words, phonics and decoding skills, vocabulary, basic comprehension, and sentence and paragraph structure. Classroom activities will be differentiated to meet the needs of the learners in the classroom.

Third Grade Language Arts Review and Reinforcement Cost: $160 Eligibility: Students that completed Third Grade in the school or students that performed on or below level in reading and/or writing reading and writing skills including: vocabulary, word study, comprehension strategies for fiction and non-fiction texts, and paragraph and essay development. Classroom activities will be differentiated to meet the needs of the learners in the classroom. Third Grade Math Review and Reinforcement Cost: $80 Eligibility: Students that completed Third Grade in the school or students that performed on or below level in math math skills including: adding and subtracting numbers, place value, estimating, fractions, measurement, and multiplying and dividing numbers. Classroom activities will be differentiated to meet the needs of the learners in the classroom.

8 Enrichment Classes - Reading, Writing, and Research Reading/Writing and Awesome Authors Workshop Cost: $160 Eligibility: Students that completed Kindergarten in the school This course is designed for students to practice reading, writing, speaking, and listening during the summer. The students will participate in interactive lessons, listen to a variety of stories from various authors and complete creative writing assignments. Each student will be an AWESOME author by writing and illustrating his/her own book. Come join the fun! Readers Theater Camp and Genre Journey Cost: $240 Time: 8:30-11:30 Eligibility: Students that completed First, Second, and Third Grade in the school This course is designed for students to develop their reading fluency, vocabulary, and writing skills as they participate in Readers Theater. The imaginative, leveled scripts support the different reading abilities of students while fostering a fun and creative learning environment. Students will not only enjoy the reading material, but will also get to create props and scenery for their plays. The parents will also be invited to view their final performance. In the second aspect of this course the students will be able to build the fluency and automaticity of text, while being supported by material that addresses their current reading abilities. This course will use the district s adopted comprehension strategies and skills. We will target key vocabulary as well as writing skills and concepts while delving in the different genres. Genres will include: fairy tales, poetry, mysteries, biographies, and fiction and non-fiction texts. Enriching Writing: Communicating Effectively Through Oral and Written Language Cost: $160 Eligibility: Students that completed Fourth and Fifth Grade in the school This course is designed to extend students abilities in the three modes of writing outlined in the Common Core (narrative, informational, opinion). Students will receive instruction and practice writing to communicate for a variety of purposes. Students will also gain exposure learning the essential skills needed for effective communication.

9 Research Detectives Cost: $80 Eligibility: Students that completed Fourth and Fifth Grade in the school This course is designed for students to learn the basics of quality research in the digital age, as well as proper research skills, note-taking techniques, analysis and evaluation of sources, synthesis of ideas and methods of presentation. Students will learn an overview of the research process, undergo a group research project, and complete an individual research project. Math Courses Mathematical Storytime and Crafting Fun Cost: $160 Eligibility: Students that completed Second and Third Grade in the school This course is designed to supplement and showcase the district s math curriculum in a non-traditional way. Students will engage in divergent thinking using the 8 mathematical practices. Students will be enthusiastically pulled into math stories written by well-known mathematician authors such as Marilyn Burns, Greg Tang and Stuart Murphy. Each math story will be accompanied with a delightful activity that not only teaches the math content standards artfully, but shows direct application to life through the students four language domains. Activities will be differentiated and showcase the students ability level with each standard. Activities range from crafts to hands-on manipulation to creating their own math scenarios.

10 Art Courses Second and Third Grade Art Enrichment Cost: $80 Time: 8:30-9:30 Eligibility: Students that completed Second and Third Grade in the school This course is designed for students who will create various artworks and explore a variety of mediums in art. Students will learn and practice new art skills/techniques, review art vocabulary, and discuss Art History aligned with the School District 308 Elementary Art Curriculum for second and third grade. Students will also participate in discussions/art critique about their artworks. Some topics to explore may include: drawing, watercolors, tempera painting, collage, printmaking, sculpture, abstract art, realistic art, landscapes, portraits, still life, cartooning, and weaving. Fourth and Fifth Grade Art Enrichment Cost: $160 Time: 9:30-11:30 Eligibility: Students that completed Fourth and Fifth Grade in the school This course is designed for students who will create various artworks and explore a variety of mediums in art. 11 Logic and Problem-Solving Logic Puzzles, Strategy Games, Brain Teasers and More Cost: $80 Time: 8:30-9:30 Eligibility: Students that completed First and Second Grade in the school This course is designed for students who will acquire the knowledge and skills to recognize and solve problems. Students will participate in activities to learn problem-solving, strategy, trust, and calculated risk-taking. They will be able to apply inductive and deductive reasoning to solve problems, and students will be able to gain knowledge about logic puzzles and apply it to new problems. Learners will also utilize reasoning skills and logic tools to create logic puzzles and card and board games.
