For more than twenty years, we have received tremendous support from individuals, families, businesses and community organizations spanning each of our college regions (Comox Valley, Campbell River, Port Alberni and Mt. Waddington) and beyond. As a result of these relationships, the North Island College Foundation has awarded in excess of $1.7 million in scholarships and bursaries to more than 2,660 students. We are eternally grateful to all who continue to invest in North Island College students and help make their dreams a reality. 3 NIC Foundation Awards ~ How to Be Successful USING THIS Booklet Don t be overwhelmed by the number of awards in this booklet. To make it as simple as possible they ve been separated into sections relevant to program area and campus location and then further by awards for entering students and continuing and graduating students. Read through the awards and their criteria specific to your program, your campus as well as the awards under the General heading which apply to everyone. Make notes as you go and highlight any key eligibility requirements that you may want to address in the Additional Information section of the application. Use the glossary of terms located in the back of the booklet if you come across anything you are unsure of. If at any point you have questions about the criteria, the process or what category you fall into, do not hesitate to call or the Foundation at x 4039 or foundation@nic.bc.ca. Application instructions The Application Form is located on the NIC website at There are 7 sections in the application. Once you begin the online application you will be able to save your work and come back to it at a later date to complete it. You must have a valid North Island College student ID number to apply for NIC scholarships and bursaries. Applications must be received by April 30, Review the instructions for each section carefully. You will only be considered for awards for which you are eligible, and where the required information has been submitted. Do some research and think through your costs and budget to make an accurate estimate of your income and expenses. Take the time to describe your financial need and responsibilities in the Other Financial Information section. Expand on your personal circumstances by thoughtfully answering the 6 questions in the Additional Information section. The Selection Committee can only consider your circumstances if they are explained clearly. Plan Ahead: **A significant number of North Island College awards require at least two letters of reference in support of the application.** if you do not submit two letters of reference, you will not be considered for those specific awards. An application is considered to be incomplete if the required application fields are not filled in. Incomplete applications will not be considered by the Selection Committee. All students submitting an Awards Application will have their academic transcripts reviewed. If you are a NEW Student applying for awards, please ensure you provide your most recent high school transcript to an NIC Admissions Officer. Scholarships Scholarships are funds awarded to students for academic achievement. **Unless otherwise noted, scholarships are awarded to fulltime students taking a minimum 24 credits. Bursaries Bursaries are funds designed to assist students who demonstrate financial need. Students must meet specific eligibility criteria and must submit an application. Please refer to the application instructions in this booklet. Scholarships and bursaries must be used in the year they are awarded, and in most cases, awards will be applied to tuition fees for entering and continuing students. Confidentiality commitment North Island College is committed to protecting your privacy. Any information collected will be protected and used in compliance with the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act for the purpose of evaluating your eligibility to receive a financial award from North Island College and to issue necessary tax forms, as well as for research and planning. 12 GENERAL Alberni-Clayoquot Innovation Society Bursary 2 awards of $1815 These awards are available to students enrolling in any full-time program at North Island College s Port Alberni campus. Students applying for this award must have demonstrated financial need. Andrea W Rowe Entrance Bursary $750 This entrance award has been established to assist a female student entering her first year of any program of study at North Island College. The recipient will be enrolled in at least a 60% course load at the Comox Valley campus. Preference will be given to students who have attended any Adult Basic Education program at North Island College. Buckley Family Award $500 This entrance award is available to a serving or retired member of the Canadian Forces or a family member of Canadian Forces personnel, who is pursuing post-secondary education in any field of study. The recipient must plan to attend North Island College on a full-time basis and demonstrate financial need. Involvement in volunteer activities or community service will also be considered. Canadian Daughters Provincial Bursary $550 This entrance award is available to a mature student returning to North Island College s Comox Valley campus to pursue an education, or upgrade training in any field of study. The recipient must be attending on a full-time basis, must be a Canadian citizen and have a demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a Canadian Daughter, or a relative of a Canadian Daughter. Creative Employment Access Society Bursary $860 This award is available to a mature student who will be attending North Island College and lives in the Comox Valley. The recipient can be participating in any program at North Island College, but preference will be given to a student who is pursuing training for a new career, or re-training in an existing field. The recipient must have been out of school for at least one year. Credit Union Foundation of BC Bursary 2 awards of $500 These bursaries will be awarded to students entering or continuing studies in academic, technical or vocational programs at North Island College. Students who might otherwise have difficulty completing their studies by reason of financial hardship are eligible for this bursary. CUPE (North Island College) Local 3479 Bursary $795 This entrance award, created by the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 3479 (North Island College), is available to a student entering North Island College who has demonstrated financial need. The recipient may enroll on either a full or part-time basis in any credit program at North Island College. David N Hudson Bursary $295 This award, created in honour of a long-standing educator with North Island College, is available for a student enrolled in Distance Education course(s). The student must have a demonstrated financial need and may be entering or continuing their studies at NIC. Preference will be given to a student attending North Island College s Mt. Waddington campus or an NIC Centre. Denise Forest Memorial Bursary $590 This award is available to an entering or a continuing student attending the Comox Valley campus on either a full or part-time basis. As with all bursaries the recipient must have demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to recipients who actively support the principles of equality as they relate to the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender groups. Dr Lou Dryden Student Success Bursary $925 This college-wide award, named in honour of North Island College s third president, is available to an entering student enrolled in any full-time program or course of studies offered by North Island College. The student must have successfully graduated from high school and must demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to a student who is a son or daughter of a single parent. Neil Murphy, is an entrance scholarship available to a student in any full-time credit program offered by North Island College. The recipient must have demonstrated proof of outstanding academic achievement. Frame & Co. Injury Law Bursary $840 This entrance award, created by Frame & Co. Injury Law is available to a full-time student enrolling at North Island College s Campbell River campus. The recipient must have a demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a student who is retraining as a result of injury. Hon. Stanley B Hagen Memorial Scholarship 2 awards of $2280 Created in memory of long-serving Comox Valley MLA Stan Hagen in honour of his service to the community and his commitment and support of youth, these entrance scholarships are available to Comox Valley students enrolled in full-time studies in any program area. The recipients of these scholarships will have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and will have contributed to the well being of their community through active involvement in volunteer activities or community service. Lyle Wesley Scholarship $240 This College-wide entrance scholarship was created in memory of Lyle Wesley, a long time supporter and advocate for the BC community college system. It is available to a student enrolling in any one or two year full-time program or course of studies offered by North Island College. The recipient must have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement. Lyndon Cross Memorial Bursary 2 awards of $2000 The Lyndon Cross Memorial Bursary, established by his family and friends as a tribute to their husband and son, brother, father and friend who, as a social worker in Campbell River, had a profound impact on children in the care of Youth Protection Services and their foster families. Lyndon was determined to see children in care excel and make positive changes in their lives. Lyndon was always proud to attend the graduation ceremonies of his kids and to see them receive their high school diplomas. He made a difference in their lives and gave them hope that they could make a better life for themselves through education. The Lyndon Cross Memorial Bursaries are available to young adults from the Campbell River region, who have previously been or are currently in the foster care system. The student must reside in Campbell River and have a demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a student who has given back to their community through active involvement in volunteer activities or community service. Minerva Foundation Award for BC Women 3 awards of $1250 These college-wide awards are available to either entering or continuing female Aboriginal students attending North Island College on a full-time basis (minimum 60% course load). The award will be granted on the basis of academic proficiency and demonstrated financial need in addition to one or more of the following criteria: single mothers advancing their education; mature women retraining in anticipation of returning to the workforce after a long absence; women pursuing education in non-traditional fields of study; and women who have overcome exceptional challenges and educational barriers. Munro Family Scholarship $1000 This award is available to a student who graduated from a School District 71 (Comox Valley) high school, whose ordinary residence is in the Comox Valley and who exemplifies excellence in music, academics, athletics and community involvement. The recipient should have played regularly with the Strathcona Symphony, or similar orchestra, and demonstrate proof of scholastic standing and acceptance to North Island College or other institution of the recipients choice, preferable in the study of music. Applicants should submit a short essay about themselves, describing their accomplishments, contributions to the community, and plans for the future. A reference from a high school teacher and/or administrator should accompany the application. The recipient will be determined by a panel, comprised of representatives of North Island College Foundation (Awards Selection Committee) and a descendent of Charles Grant Munro or proxy. The panel may choose to interview the applicants to assist in the selection of the recipient. North Island College Administrators Bursary $880 This College-wide entrance award, created by North Island College Administrators is available to a student entering any full-time credit program at North Island College. 15 Port Alberni Campus Bursary $525 This award is available to an entering or continuing student attending the Port Alberni campus. The student must have a demonstrated financial need. Students applying for this bursary must submit a brief outline summarizing how the bursary would contribute to their continuing education and/or employment upgrading goals. Ray Hughes Scholarship $700 This award is to be given to a full or part-time student registered in an academic, vocational or technical program entering North Island College s Campbell River campus. The recipient will have completed Grade 12 or equivalent in School District No. 72 (Campbell River) and must have been under the Special Services umbrella at some time during their school career. The North Island College Adult Special Education Faculty will select the recipient in conjunction with the Awards Selection Committee. Stan Mounce Memorial Bursary $400 The Stan Mounce Memorial Bursary, established by his family and friends, honours Stan s love of children and his commitment to ensuring each one enjoyed the best possible educational experience for their interests and abilities. Stan was a career elementary teacher and principal in School District No. 71 where he will long be remembered for his compassion and skill in nurturing a positive environment for both students and colleagues. This entrance bursary is available to a student from the Comox Valley enrolling in any credit program at North Island College on a full-time basis with a demonstrated financial need. Stewart Edward Wallis Memorial Scholarship $4250 The scholarship shall be awarded annually to the top academic student graduating from Grade 12 from Kitasoo Community School, located in Klemtu, B.C. To be eligible, the student must be proceeding to post-secondary education at either North Island College or any other postsecondary institution in B.C. Upon demonstration of registration at either North Island College or the post-secondary institution of their choice, the recipient will be issued a cheque for the amount of the scholarship. Susan Toresdahl Entrance Bursary $150 This award, created by the North Island College Foundation Board in honour of Susan Toresdahl, former Executive Director of the North Island College Foundation is for a full-time student attending any NIC campus or centre. The recipient must have demonstrated financial need and. Preference will be given to a student who is actively involved in volunteer activities or community service. Women for Women Bursary $TBD These awards are available to any female single parent who resides in the Campbell River region enrolling or continuing their studies at North Island College s Campbell River campus. The recipients may be attending on a full or part-time basis and must be willing to attend at least one Women for Women event to meet the organizers and/or event participants thereby furthering the Women for Women cause for future NIC recipients. Alberni Valley Lions Club Bursary 2 awards of $500 The recipients of these awards must reside in Port Alberni and be continuing students who have completed the first year of any North Island College program. The recipients will have maintained a satisfactory academic standing and have a demonstrated financial need. Citizenship and involvement within the College and the community will also be considered. Arrowsmith Rotary Club Bursary $500 This award is available to a student who is continuing their education and who has demonstrated volunteer service and/or service to the Port Alberni community. The recipient must have demonstrated financial need. Campbell River Business Professional Women s Network Bursary $250 The recipient must be a mature, continuing, female students with a demonstrated, unmet financial need. Applicants will be furthering their career goals by pursuing studies in any academic, trades or vocational program. The recipient will be a resident of Campbell River enrolled in either full or part-time studies at North Island College. Preference will be given to students who plan to use their education towards an entrepreneurial endeavour. This award will be applied to tuition fees upon registration at the College. North Island College Foundation Program Scholarships* 25 awards of $500 $500 will be awarded to the highest achiever in most North Island College programs. North Island College International Achievement Scholarship $500 This award is available to a North Island College International continuing or graduating student who has been studying full-time on any NIC campus for a minimum of two semesters. This scholarship will be granted based on academic achievement. Demonstrated involvement in community service, specifically related to being engaged with the learning or living community, will also be considered. North Island College International Intercultural Bursary $500 The recipient of this award should be able to demonstrate an ability to work across cultures and within cultures, supporting students in both academic and social transitions. This award is available to a Canadian or International North Island College student. The recipient can be either continuing or graduating and will have been attending North Island College on a full-time basis on any campus for a minimum of two semesters. North Island Students Union Bursary 3 awards of $280 These bursaries, created by the North Island Students Union, Local 72 are available to continuing students enrolled in any full or part-time program and attending any North Island College campus. Preference for this award will be given to students who have been actively involved in volunteer activities or community service. The students must also have a demonstrated financial need. Port Alberni Campus Administrators Scholarship* $200 This award is made possile provided by donations from the administrators of North Island College s Port Alberni campus. The scholarship is available to an outstanding student who has demonstrated leadership, citizenship, and has worked to enhance campus life. Port Alberni Campus Bursary $525 This award is available to an entering or continuing student attending the Port Alberni campus. The student must have a demonstrated financial need. Pythian Order Academic Program Bursary 5 awards of $615 Created by the Knights of Pythias #64 and the Pythian Sisters #7, these bursaries are available to North Island College continuing students attending the Comox Valley or Campbell River campuses who have completed at least one semester of university level studies. The recipients must have demonstrated financial need, maintained an above average academic standing and be attending on a full or part-time basis. Preference may be given to a relative of the Pythians. The bursary will be applied to tuition fees. Rotary Club of Courtenay - Vancouver Foundation Scholarship $2000 The Vancouver Foundation, on behalf of The Robert & Florence Filberg Fund, in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Courtenay, offers this scholarship to a full-time continuing student at the Comox Valley campus of North Island College. The selection criteria include: a high caliber of academic work and extracurricular contributions to the College and their community. Steve Schoenhoff Creative Writing Scholarship $TBD The recipient of this award will be a full or part time continuing NIC student. Available college-wide, this scholarship will be awarded annually to the student with the highest grade in a creative writing course in the previous academic year. Overall grade point average will also be considered. Terry and Phyllis Ryan Humanities Bursary 2 awards of $1350 These awards, established to provide incentive and support to students as they move through their post-secondary education are available to continuing full or part-time North Island College students. The recipients, Comox Valley residents, must have completed at least one semester of study and be continuing their studies at the Comox Valley campus. The students must have a demonstrated financial need. The awards will be applied to tuition upon registration. Wedler Engineering Excellence Award $185 This bursary is available to students graduating from at least one full year of studies at North Island College with the intention of pursuing a career in civil engineering or engineering technology. To be eligible, students must have maintained satisfactory academic standing. Preference will be given to students who exhibit youthful and energetic spirits. The recipient will be issued a cheque upon demonstration of registration in any civil engineering degree, civil engineering technologist or survey technologist diploma program. UNIVERSITY STUDIES AND TRANSFER Bob Minkler Memorial Bursary $605 This entrance award named in memory of Bob Minkler, was created through the generosity of Marine Harvest (formerly Stolt Sea Farm Inc.), Ewos Canada Ltd., and Moore-Clark. The award is available to a full-time student enrolling at North Island College and living within the geographic area encompassing the Comox Valley through to the northern end of Vancouver Island (including the adjacent islands). Preference will be given to a student pursuing an educational goal within salmon aquaculture, marine biology, or an Associate degree in the sciences. Preference will be given to a dependent, or a relative of an employee or volunteer of the Campbell River Hospital Auxiliary. Campbell River Recycling Society Bursary 2 awards of $2600 These awards are available to entering University Studies/Transfer students whose goal is to pursue education that will lead to a career in environmental sciences. The students must be Campbell River residents attending North Island College on a full or part-time basis. The recipients must demonstrate financial need. Canadian Federation of University Women - Comox Valley Bursary $655 This entrance award, created by the Canadian Federation of University Women - Comox Valley, is available to a mature female student who resides in the Comox Valley and is studying at North Island College s Comox Valley campus. The recipient may be attending on a full or part-time basis in a University Studies program or upgrading in preparation for university studies. * Denotes an award or bursary for which an application is not necessary 17
19 Carl O, Margaret, Carl A, Tubby and Florence Thulin Memorial Bursary $870 This entrance award named in memory of Campbell River pioneers, Carl O., Margaret, Carl A., Tubby and Florence Thulin is available to a full or part-time Campbell River student enrolling in the Business Administration program or University Transfer courses that lead to a business field. The recipient must also have a demonstrated financial need. Catherine Walker Memorial Bursary $530 The Catherine Walker Memorial Bursary is available to a mature student (25 years or older) from the Campbell River area, with a demonstrated financial need. To be eligible, the recipient must be enrolling in University Transfer Arts and Science at North Island College on a full-time basis. Applicants must submit an application, including a short essay describing their personal goals and aspirations and how this bursary will assist them in achieving their goals. The Catherine Walker Memorial Bursary must be used in the year awarded. Comox Valley Rife Volunteer and Resonant Light Technology Scholarship $370 This entrance scholarship is available to a full or part-time student enrolling in University Studies at the Comox Valley campus. The recipient must have a career goal of complementary medicine or a similar field of health care. Fred Bossom Memorial Bursary $2600 This College-wide entrance award named in memory of Fred Bossom, is created through the generosity of Vancouver Island InsuranCentres Inc. The award is available to a full or part-time student enrolling in the Business Administration program or University Transfer courses that lead to a business field. The recipient must also have a demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a student actively involved in volunteer activities or community service. Grieg Seafood BC Ltd Bursary $1000 This award is available to an entering or continuing student at North Island College. The recipient will be enrolling in a program of courses that relate to marine biology, biology, or similar area of study. The student receiving this award must be a resident of a community of Nootka Sound, Campbell River, adjacent islands or the North Island region. Highland Grad 85 Reunion Bursary $175 This entrance bursary is available to a student who has graduated from Highland Secondary School, School District No. 71, in the previous academic year. The recipient will have a clear and articulated education/ career path and be enrolling in full-time studies in college or university level courses at North Island College. The recipient must have a demonstrated financial need. Michael Pallan Memorial Scholarship 2 awards of $1350 The Michael Pallan Memorial Scholarship, established by his parents BR (Tom) Pallan and Kulwant (Koko) Pallan, has been created as a tribute to their loving and gentle youngest son Michael. Michael was a knowledgeable and experienced commercial fisherman who was always prepared to offer help to his fellow fishermen as the need arose. These entrance scholarships have been provided to support students from Campbell River enrolling at NIC s Campbell River campus. Two scholarships are for students enrolling in a trade or vocational program, and two scholarships are available to students entering the university studies program. The recipients must have clear career goals and be attending on a full-time basis. Muir Family Bursary $1000 This entrance bursary is for a full-time or part-time student entering NIC from School District No. 71. The recipient must have graduated from Navigate/ NIDES with a C+ average and be enrolling in college or university level courses at NIC. If there are no applicants, the criteria will expand to include Partners in Education (PIE), distance learning students and/or students with a background in home schooling. The award will be applied to tuition fees upon registration. Port Alberni 2004 Winter Games Legacy Scholarship $130 This entrance scholarship is available to a North Island College student enrolling in University Studies at the Port Alberni campus. The recipient must be working towards the completion of a degree in sports medicine, kinesiology, physiotherapy, or similar field. Tsolum Heritage Society Bursary $650 The recipient of this award will be enrolled in University Studies at the Comox Valley campus. The recipient must have a demonstrated financial need as well as proof of satisfactory academic performance while in high school. Applicants must submit an application, including a short essay describing themselves, their personal goals and aspirations, and how this bursary will assist them in achieving their goals. They must also include two letters of reference supporting their application. Applicants must live in the traditional Tsolum area, which is bounded by the Oyster River, the mountains, the ocean and Rennison Road. They must have clear career goals and be attending on a full-time basis. 18 Apply online at
20 Ann Elmore Haig-Brown Memorial Bursary $995 This award, created by the University Women s Club of Campbell River in memory of Ann Elmore Haig-Brown is available to a mature female student studying at North Island College, Campbell River campus. Students applying for this award must have completed at least 18 credits of first year university level courses achieving a B- average or better, and be working towards a Bachelor Degree in any discipline. The student must also have a demonstrated financial need. David Clements Family Teacher Bursary $520 This award, created by the family of David Clements, a long-time Comox Valley school teacher and resident is available to a full-time North Island College student whose goal is to become a teacher. The recipient of this award will be a grade 12 graduate from School District No. 71 (Comox Valley) who has successfully completed one year of University Transfer courses and is continuing on to year two at NIC. Preference will be given to a student whose interests in the arts, athletics, community service, and/or outdoor pursuits can be used to enhance their teaching career. The bursary will be applied to the student s tuition account for the second year of study. JGM Luckhurst Bursary $470 This award, named in memory of James Gordon Maxwell Luckhurst, a lumberman and long-time resident of Campbell River is available to a North Island College student attending on a full or part-time basis at the Campbell River campus. The recipient of this award will have successfully completed at least one semester at North Island College in a University Transfer program. Students applying for this award must have a demonstrated financial need and have maintained a successful academic standing. Lazo Women s Institute Scholarship 2 awards of $830 These scholarships, created by the Lazo Women s Institute are available to continuing full-time or part-time North Island College University Studies students who have demonstrated academic excellence. The recipients must reside within School District No. 71 (Comox Valley), be Canadian citizens, and be attending North Island College s Comox Valley or Campbell River campuses. The scholarships will be applied to tuition fees upon registration. Preference will be given to a member, or a relative of a member, of the BC Women s Institute. Marianne Muir Graduating Bursary $750 This bursary is available to a male student graduating from any University Transfer program at North Island College s Comox Valley campus. The recipient must demonstrate financial need and be proceeding to university to continue their post-secondary education. The bursary will be payable to the recipient s chosen institution upon proof of registration. Nyrstar Mining Ltd Myra Falls Operations Bursary $245 This award is available to a continuing, full-time student in a University Studies science program at either the Campbell River or Comox Valley campus. A student applying for this bursary must have successfully completed one full year of transfer credits and have demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a student pursuing a degree in engineering, environmental studies, geology, metallurgy, computer sciences or a related field of study. The bursary will be applied to tuition fees. Pat Bevan Rural Student Bursary $775 This award is available to a mature student from a rural area with a demonstrated financial need. The student must be in their second or further semester of full or part-time studies at North Island College. A major determining factor will be the distance between the applicant s permanent home address within the North Island College region and the College campus they attend. Pat Bevan Women s Bursary 2 awards of $775 The recipients of these awards must be mature female students with an unmet financial need. The students may be enrolled in either full or part-time studies. Preference will be given to students who resides on one of the Islands that North Island College serves. Paul Arbour Memorial Bursary $370 This award is available to a continuing full or part-time student taking University Transfer courses. Preference will be given to a student who is majoring in Business or the Social Sciences.
