4 ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP The Brentwood Community Foundation Academic Scholarship for $4,000 will be awarded over a four-year period to a high school graduate to attend an accredited four-year college or university. A minimum 3.0 GPA must be maintained to receive the annual award. Minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale A copy of an official high school transcript which shows rank, GPA, TAKS, SAT/ACT. The transcript must be sent directly from the high school to the Brentwood Community Foundation. An official fee receipt that indicates paid enrollment as a full time freshman at a college or university. Submission of letters of acceptance or statement of fees paid in full will not be accepted. Participation in extracurricular or community service activities. Two letters of recommendation. One letter must be from the company or agency where community service is provided. 5 BRENTWOOD BAPTIST CHURCH SCHOLARSHIP The Brentwood Baptist Church Scholarship is a $1,000 one-time award given to a high school graduate. A member of Brentwood Baptist Church for at least one year prior to time of application. A copy of an official high school transcript which shows rank, GPA, TAKS, SAT/ACT. The transcript must be sent directly from the high school to the Brentwood Community Foundation. An official fee receipt that indicates paid enrollment as a full time freshman at a college or university. Submission of letters of acceptance or statement of fees paid in full will not be accepted. 6 BRENTWOOD BAPTIST CHURCH GRANT The $500 Brentwood Baptist Church Grant is awarded to a high school graduate. A member of Brentwood Baptist Church for at least one year prior to time of application. A copy of an official high school transcript which shows rank, GPA, TAKS, SAT/ACT. The transcript must be sent directly from the high school to the Brentwood Community Foundation. An official fee receipt that indicates paid enrollment as a full time freshman at a college or university. Submission of letters of acceptance or statement of fees paid in full will not be accepted. 7 BARBARA TOLDEN BRYANT SCHOLARSHIP This one-time $1,000 scholarship award will be given to a student who plans to pursue a Bachelor of science degree. 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. A copy of an official high school transcript which shows rank, GPA, TAKS, SAT/ACT. The transcript must be sent directly from the high school to the Brentwood Community Foundation. An official fee receipt that indicates paid enrollment as a full time freshman at a college or university. Submission of letters of acceptance or statement of fees paid in full will not be accepted. Letters must be signed and recently dated. This scholarship was created by family and friends to honor the memory of Barbara Tolden Bryant who worked in the medical field as a cytotechnologist. 7

8 LIONEL THOMPSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Two scholarships will be awarded in this category. The first is a one-time $1,250 award given to a student to pursue a degree in an area related to information systems and/or computer sciences. The second one-time award for $1,250 will be given to a student who is currently enrolled in an accredited university which offers an engineering program GPA on a 4.0 scale. A copy of an official high school transcript which shows rank, GPA, TAKS, SAT/ACT or an official copy of the university transcript. The transcript must be sent directly from the high school or the university to the Brentwood Community Foundation. An official fee receipt that indicates paid enrollment as a full time student. This scholarship was created to honor the memory of Lionel Thompson, husband of Mary E. Thompson and brother of Marilyn Rowe. 8

9 HERRINGTON LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP The one-time $1,000 Scholarship will be awarded to a high school graduate to pursue a degree in the field of science, mathematics, engineering or technology at an accredited four-year college or university. 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. An overall B average in mathematics and science courses. A copy of an official high school transcript which shows rank, GPA, STAR, SAT/ACT. The transcript must be sent directly from the high school to the Brentwood Community Foundation. 10 AUBREY EARL AND TERRALYN WALTERS-SWIFT MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP Two $1,500 scholarships will be awarded to a high school graduate with a declared major in the field of music. 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. 11 RODNEY AND MARION WILSON NURSING SCHOLARSHIP This $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to a student in the field of nursing. The recipient must be enrolled in an accredited nursing program. 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. An official copy of the university transcript which includes a GPA. 13 LAMAR FRAZIER BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AWARD The Business Excellence Award was created to provide scholarships to five students with declared majors in a field of business, marketing, economics, or finance. Students must be enrolled full-time with a minimum of 12 credit hours and classified, according to credit hours earned, as a sophomore, junior, or senior in an accredited bachelor business-related program. Each award totals $1, on a 4.0 scale. An official copy of the university transcript which includes a GPA. The transcript must be sent directly from the university to the Brentwood Community Foundation. An official fee receipt that indicates paid enrollment as a full time student at a college or university. Submission of letters of acceptance or statement of fees paid in full will not be accepted. 14 TERRENCE AND TERRI GEE EMERGING LEADERS SCHOLARSHIP The $3,000 Emerging Leaders Scholarship will be awarded to two high school graduates to pursue a degree in the field of their choice at an accredited four-year college or university. 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. A copy of an official high school transcript which shows rank, GPA, TAKS, SAT/ACT. The transcript must be sent directly from the high school to the Brentwood Community Foundation. An official fee receipt that indicates paid enrollment as a full time freshman at a college or university. Submission of letters of acceptance or statement of fees paid in full will not be accepted. Participation in extra-curricular and community service activities. Students must currently hold or recently have held a leadership position in two or more extracurricular activities in school, church, or the community. Two letters of recommendation. One letter must be from the company or agency where extra-curricular activities or community service is completed. Letters must be signed and recently dated. Minimum 500 word essay titled Being a Leader, Not Just a Follower. This award was created and funded by personal contributions from Terrence and Terri Gee. 14

15 ALMA JUANITA JONES APPLIED SCIENCES EXCELLENCE AWARD The Applied Sciences Excellence Award, in the amount of $2,250, will be awarded to undergraduate and graduate students, and to a student athlete. These students must pursue a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree. Four awards will be made in this scholarship category. Three awards of $2,250 each will be given to undergraduate and graduate students; one additional award will be given to an undergraduate or graduate student who is also an athlete. The recipients must be enrolled in an accredited college or university with a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester. GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale. A copy of an official high school transcript which shows rank, GPA, TAKS, SAT/ACT or an official copy of the university transcript. The transcript must be sent directly from the high school or the university to the Brentwood Community Foundation. An official fee receipt that indicates paid enrollment as a full time student at a college or university. Submission of letters of acceptance or statement of fees paid in full will not be accepted. These awards were created and funded by David Fitzgerald Jones in honor of his mother to recognize outstanding students for their early achievements and dedication toward the study of sciences. 15

16 THE REUBEN WHEATLEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Reuben Wheatley Memorial Scholarship will fund individual awards of $2,500 each, to two high school graduates to pursue a degree in the field of their choice at an accredited four-year college or university. The recipients must be enrolled full-time with a minimum of 12 credit hours. A copy of an official high school transcript which shows rank, GPA, TAKS, SAT/ACT. The transcript must be sent directly from the high school to the Brentwood Community Foundation. The family of Reuben Wheatley funds these two memorial scholarships in honor of their patriarch whose priorities, instilled by his parents, remained intact throughout his life: God, family, friends, and fun. Reuben, a financial supporter of the Brentwood Community Foundation Scholarship Program for over twenty years, truly believed in funding the Village legacy. 16

17 ABA GAYLE WILEY SCHOLARSHIP FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES Two $500 scholarships will be awarded to a student with a physical disability who is an entering freshman or an upper classman. A copy of an official high school transcript which shows rank, GPA, TAKS, SAT/ACT or an official copy of the university transcript. The transcript must be sent directly from the high school or university to the Brentwood Community Foundation. An official fee receipt that indicates paid enrollment as a student at a college or university. Submission of letters of acceptance or statement of fees paid in full will not be accepted. Two letters of recommendation. Letters must be signed and recently dated. This award was created through a personal donation by Aba Gayle Wiley for students with physical disabilities. 17

18 WELTON AND ROSANNA OWENS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This $2,500 scholarship will be awarded, $1,250 per semester, to a full time student to pursue a degree in elementary or secondary education at an accredited college or university. The student must maintain a 2.5 GPA to receive the award for the second semester. 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. A copy of an official high school transcript which shows rank, GPA, TAKS, SAT/ACT or an official copy of the university transcript. The transcript must be sent directly from the high school or university to the Brentwood Community Foundation. An official fee receipt that indicates paid enrollment as a full time student at a college or university. Submission of letters of acceptance or statement of fees paid in full will not be accepted. Letters must be signed and recently dated. The Welton and Rosanna Owens Memorial Scholarship is funded by J. D. and Mittie Gregory in memory of Mittie's parents. Both parents were advocates of educational opportunities for youth. They were devoted members of the St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Beaumont, TX. 18

19 LTC (Ret.) FAY HATTER MEMORIAL NURSING SCHOLARSHIP This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a second year student in the field of nursing. The recipient must be enrolled in an accredited nursing program. 2.6 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Enrolled as a full time student in an RN or BSN accredited nursing program. An official copy of the university transcript which includes a GPA. The transcript must be sent directly from the university to the Brentwood Community Foundation. 20 LEROY VAN AND GEORGE DAVIS MEMORIAL PHARMACY SCHOLARSHIP The $5,000 Leroy Van and George Davis Memorial Pharmacy Scholarship will be awarded to a full time student enrolled in a six-year accredited Historically Black College or University (HBCU) School of Pharmacy. This scholarship is not renewable, but can be awarded to the same student more than once. The student must maintain a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in all academic subjects. The goal of this scholarship is to strengthen the student s skills and commitment to a career in pharmacy. 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. An official copy of the university transcript which includes GPA. The transcript must be sent directly from the school or university to the Brentwood Community Foundation. An official fee receipt that indicates paid enrollment as a full time student at a college or university. Submission of letters of acceptance or statement of fees paid in full will not be accepted. Proof of acceptance in an accredited HBCU School of Pharmacy. Minimum 500 word essay which includes educational goals and reasons for pursuing a pharmacy degree. A list of school, community, or volunteer activities in which the student is involved. Two letters of recommendation. One of the letters must be from a member of the HBCU School of Pharmacy staff. 21 HELEN LOUISE BOWIE SCHOLASTIC AWARD The Helen Louise Bowie $1,000 scholarship is provided to further the education a of high school graduate in an academic major of their choice. AND GERALDINE WALKER HIGHER EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP AWARD Three $2,000 scholarships ($1,000 per semester) will be awarded to three graduating high school students to pursue higher education at an accredited four-year college or university in a major of their choice. 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. A copy of an official high school transcript which shows rank, GPA, TAKS, SAT/ACT. The transcript must be sent directly from the high school to the Brentwood Community Foundation. An official fee receipt that indicates paid enrollment as a full time freshman at a college or university. Submission of letters of acceptance or statement of fees paid in full will not be accepted. The student must have held a leadership or participating role in two or more extracurricular activities in school, church and/or the community. 23 JOHNNY L. WALKER, JR. AND GERALDINE WALKER VOCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP This one-time $1,000 award, ($750 per semester), will be given to a graduating high school student to pursue a license or certification in an occupational trade or technical career. The student may attend the vocational or technical school of their choice. 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. A copy of an official high school transcript. The transcript must be sent directly from the high school to the Brentwood Community Foundation. An official fee receipt that indicates paid enrollment at a vocational or technical school. Submission of letters of acceptance or statement of fees paid in full will not be accepted. Evidence of participation in extracurricular activities in a leadership role at school, church or in the community. Two letters of recommendation, preferably from a teacher, sponsor, and/or administrator associated with the extracurricular activities. This scholarship was funded by Johnny L. 24 FITZ HUSBANDS MEMORIAL ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student who is currently enrolled in an accredited university with a major in engineering. 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. 25 WAYNE JOHNSON III PUBLIC SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP This award will be given to a sophomore, junior, or senior student with a declared major in political science, with the intent to have a career in public service. This $1,000 scholarship can be awarded to the same student for a maximum of three years if the student maintains the grade point average each year. 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. An official copy of the university transcript which includes a GPA. The transcript must be sent directly from the university to the Brentwood Community Foundation. An official fee receipt that indicates paid enrollment as a full time student at a college or university. Submission of letters of acceptance or statement of fees paid in full will not be accepted. Participation in extra-curricular and community service activities. Extra consideration will be given for demonstrated leadership in the political arena, e.g., campaign volunteer, block walking, telephone banking. Two letters of recommendation. One letter must be from the company, campaign or agency where community service is provided. The essay must also include the student's commitment to leadership and public service. This scholarship was created by Michael and Pamiel Gaskin to honor the memory of Wayne W. Johnson III, the brother of Pamiel. Wayne served the State of Texas as Assistant Attorney General, Special Prosecutor, Galveston County Chief Felony Prosecutor, Galveston County Commissioner, Democratic National Committee Officer and was a member of many community service boards. 25
