6 State of Brandenburg European Region of Excellence 2011 The European Union has awarded the state of Brandenburg the distinction of "Region of Excellence". For the first time, the EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso has chosen three European regions as Regions of Excellence, whose projects and strategies are closely aligned to the goals of the Europe 2020 strategy. The Commission has thus recognised the promotion of economic growth in Brandenburg.
