6 State of Brandenburg European Region of Excellence 2011 The European Union has awarded the state of Brandenburg the distinction of "Region of Excellence". For the first time, the EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso has chosen three European regions as Regions of Excellence, whose projects and strategies are closely aligned to the goals of the Europe 2020 strategy. The Commission has thus recognised the promotion of economic growth in Brandenburg. The award of the "Region of Excellence" seal took account of How the regions promote sustainable, innovative and integrated long-term growth How their approaches and results make a specific contribution to achieving the aims of the EU in the fields of innovation and research. 7 State of Brandenburg European Entrepreneurial Region 2011 Brandenburg has been awarded the title of "European Entrepreneurial Region 2011" by the EU Committee of the Regions. A special matrix of economic criteria determines the exact value of additional funding rates applied to the specifically defined focal areas in Brandenburg.
