5 WHY TO INVEST IN RENEWABLE ENERGY IN GERMANY? Wind, biomass, solar energy & Co. cover 16 per cent of the current electricity demand and ten per cent of the total energy consumption of Germany. This is five times as much as 20 years ago. Due to this dynamic development Germany is not only a leader in Europe but also a global trailblazer. 9 FUNDING PROGRAMMES FOR INNOVATION, RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY IN NRW The state of North Rhine-Westphalia is focusing its research and technology funding programmes on four key areas that offer a high potential for innovation, growth and employment: Biotechnology Energy and environmental research Medical research/ medical engineering Nanotechnology/ micro technology/ innovative materials

10 INNOVATION LOAN: AN EXAMPLE FOR STATE FUNDING IN NRW Innovation loans are granted at subsidised rates. These loans are granted for small and medium enterprises to finance their innovative projects in the area of research and developments. The loans are granted by the NRW.BANK according to the house bank bank procedures. The procedure is based on the entrepreneur loan of the German Reconstruction Credit Institute (KfW). This universal loan is available for middle-sized commercial enterprises to fund investments that promise sustainable economic success in one of the technological fields.

11 INNOVATION LOAN: OVERVIEW OF LOAN TERMS Loan period of either five or ten years with fixed interest rates. The loan is redemption-free in the first two or three years. The loan period is subject to the terms of the single KfW loan types. The funding share may be up to 100 per cent of the expenditures which are eligible for grants.

12 INNOVATION LOAN: OVERVIEW OF LOAN TERMS The maximum loan volume per borrower may amount up to five million Euro. The innovation loan is granted as a de minimis aid. Loans must be safeguarded according to standard banking practice. The individual interest rate for single loans is calculated on the basis of a risk-adjusted interest rate system that follows the collaterals and the credit-worthiness of the borrower.
