(239) or Course Number and Title Course offered by the Department of Chemistry and Mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences Meeting Times Class meets on Tuesday & Thursday, Reed Hall 139 Course Description and Prerequisites - 3 credits This course is designed as an overview of the theory and applications of statistical analysis. Topics include general descriptive statistics, probability, discrete distributions, normal distribution, the central limit theorem, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, and linear regression. Emphasis will be placed on developing conceptual understanding, model selection, and interpretation skills. Prerequisite(s): MAC 1105 with a minimum grade of C Page 1 of 8

3 Grading System Grading Criteria Your final grade in the class will be determined as follows: 1. Homework 16% 2. Tests/Final Exam 68% 3. Quizzes 15% 4. Attendance 1% Attendance Attendance will be taken randomly throughout the semester. Attendance is not mandatory but highly recommended for you the student to complete the course satisfactorily. It is to your benefit to attend class on a regular basis. If you are unable to attend class, it is your responsibility to obtain notes from fellow students for the material covered. Attendance will usually be taken at the beginning of a period, therefore tardiness is considered absence. Homework Homework will be assessed through the use of WebAssign, available in the bookstore or online. Once you have logged on to WebAssign, the homework assignments and due dates will be accessible. Homework assignments will not be available after the due date. Each homework assignment will be weighted equally. To account for technical and other issues, your two lowest homework scores will be dropped. ***If you miss a homework assignment for any reason, it cannot be made up. Do not ask the instructor if you can complete a homework assignment after the due date; the answer is no!*** Quizzes There will be both online and in class quizzes administered during the semester. Your cumulative quiz grade will be calculated using the highest scores attained on the standard quizzes (in others words, you can drop the two lowest scores). The quizzes will be brief and representative of the homework and/or problems worked in class and at home. The quizzes will only be available for a specific amount of time each week and must be completed during that time. Due dates for quizzes are strict and will not be extended under any circumstance. ***If you miss a quiz for any reason, it cannot be made up. Do not ask the instructor if you can complete a quiz after the due date; the answer is no!*** Tests Tests will be administered in the lecture hall on the announced time and date. Your ID may need to be displayed when turning in the exams. There will be no make-up tests given. There will be four tests given with the lowest test score dropped at the end of the semester. Tests represent 48% of your total grade. *** Do not ask the instructor if you can take the exam early; the answer is no! If you miss an exam, do not ask the instructor if you can take it later, unless you can provide valid documentation that your absence was due to an unplanned, unavoidable emergency.*** Page 3 of 8

4 Final Exam The final exam will be administered in the lecture hall on the announced time and date, as listed on Gulfline. Your ID may need to be displayed when turning in the exams. The final exam represents 20% of your total grade. Scoring Ranges for Letter Grades Total Average Score Grade 90% - 100% A 88% - 89% B+ 80% - 87% B 78% - 79% C+ 70% - 77% C 60% - 69% D 0% - 60% F * NOTE: Final grades will be calculated to the first decimal point and those 0.5 or higher will be rounded up to the next whole number. Similarly, 0.49 and below will be rounded down to the next whole number. Students wishing to appeal final grades must follow the FGCU policy for grade appeals as outlined in the FGCU Student Guidebook at the following URL: Grade Disputes Exams: If you have a dispute with a grade recorded by the instructor, you must present the graded exam to the instructor in order to obtain a change-of-score. It will be your responsibility to keep all of your returned exams. Scores will NOT be changed without the original exam being presented to the instructor. Online Assignments: In the case of online assignments you will need a PDF file created at the time you completed the assignment that contains your name, the assignment name, the date and time, and your score. To do this (and save paper), download the free CutePDF Writer, available at Homework When you have completed a homework assignment, before hitting the submit button, right click on the screen and choose print. When the print options appear choose the CutePDF Writer option. Now you can choose a location and a file name for your assignment. Keep a folder on your computer with all of your homework assignments. If a score discrepancy arises, just send me the PDF file via and your score will be adjusted accordingly. Quizzes After you submit a quiz, you must hit the print screen button on your keyboard. Then open a blank Word document, right click, and choose paste. The screen shot showing the score you just obtained on the quiz will be displayed. Save the Word document as a PDF file and keep a folder on your computer with all of your quiz scores. If a score discrepancy arises, just send me the PDF file via and your score will be adjusted accordingly. Page 4 of 8

5 Extra Credit There is absolutely no extra credit available for this class. Remember, many of your lowest scores will be dropped, per the above guidelines. ***Do not ask the instructor if there is something you can do to boost your grade (beyond completing the required course assignments); extra credit is not available for this class.*** Testing Rules and Regulations Unless otherwise stated, all tests are closed book and closed notes. However, students are encouraged to bring the formula sheets provided via the textbook to all exams. Cellular phones may not be used as calculators during quizzes or tests. Laptop/notebook personal computers will only be allowed for designated note takers as needed for Adaptive Services requests. You will be asked to remove your hat and/or headphones during exams. The university policies regarding academic honesty can be found in the Student Code of Conduct and the Policies and Procedures sections of the Student Guidebook. All students are expected to study this document, which outlines their responsibilities and consequences for violations of the policy. General Policies Attendance Policy You are expected to attend all class sessions. In case of an absence, it is your responsibility to obtain the class notes from another student. You should also check WebAssign website and keep up with any homework assignments and quizzes. You are responsible for anything you miss, including notes, announcements, assignments, etc. Absence from several meetings of a course has historically resulted in a lower grade. Attendance is entirely your responsibility. Only students registered for this course and this section may attend class meetings without advance permission of the professor. Make-Up Policy Two homework scores and two quiz scores will be dropped. As all homework assignments and quizzes are available online 24 hours a day until due date, there are absolutely no time extensions or make-ups allowed. There are no make-ups for tests. Do not waste your dropped zeros! You should attend every class day and complete every assignment that you can since you may need the dropped zeros for legitimate reasons at some point! If you miss a lot of class or assignments, you may need to withdraw from the course. Laptop Policy Please be aware that your instructor may require that laptops be turned off and put away during class time. Page 5 of 8

6 Policy In order to improve students written communication skills and to assist the instructor in replying to s in a timely manner, this policy will be strictly enforced. When sending s to your instructor, the following rules must be adhered to: 1. The subject line of the must contain the course name and your course reference number (CRN). 2. The must be signed with your first and last name. 3. The must be written in Standard English. 4. The must use proper punctuation and capitalization. If your does not meet the above criteria, you must resubmit your in the proper format in order to receive a reply. I usually reply to s within two business days. If you do not receive a reply within that time frame, check that your was sent in the proper format and resubmit if necessary. I thank you in advance for sending your s as requested. Thank you, Joseph Biden Other Miscellaneous Information In general, address any problems you encounter in the course right away. Whatever the problem is, the sooner you inform me, the more likely I will be able to help you. If you are having trouble with the course material, you should seek tutoring immediately and should come by office hours to discuss your progress in the class. Attend class and tutoring sessions from the beginning to avoid falling behind. Attempt the homework as soon as the material is covered so you will have time to resolve any issues before the due date. Late homework is not accepted! If you encounter technical difficulties with WebAssign, contact tech support right away: WebAssign Support: (800) Beyond the lowest scores that are dropped, there will be no further adjustments made due to technical problems. If you are unable to complete your WebAssign assignments on your own computer due to technical difficulties, you can use the computers in the open labs located in Ben Hill Griffin Page 6 of 8

7 #208, the Math lab computers in Academic Building 7, or the first floor of the library. Thus, problems with personal computers are not considered a valid excuse for failure to complete assignments on time. Check your grades on the WebAssign website frequently and contact me by IMMEDIATELY if you believe there are any errors. The last day to drop the course without academic penalty is Friday, November 2nd. If you decide it is necessary to drop the course, it is your responsibility to do so; the instructor is not authorized to drop you from the course. You must go to the Office of the Registrar before 5:00pm on Friday, November 2nd in order to drop the course. This section of STA 2023 is designed as a Student-Centered Activities for Large Enrollment Undergraduate Programs (SCALE-UP) course.
