The Little, Brown Handbook, Brief Version, 5 th edition. Google account, paper, and pen/pencil. By the end of this course, you should be able to plan, write, revise, and edit effective multi-paragraph essays. Your writing should demonstrate understanding of logical progression of thought backed by sufficient and relevant support. In addition, you should be able to identify and eliminate errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics. You also should be able to properly integrate basic outside sources into your content, using appropriate citations. Five multi-paragraph essays (three to include multiple drafts and be peer evaluated and revised; two to be written in class as timed essays). Assigned reading. Informal written responses and class exercises. Fourteen weekly critical-evaluation reports. Quizzes and tests. A final examination. You must have a grade of C or better to successfully complete this course. You are expected to come to class prepared to work. Textbook should be brought to each class along with necessary material. Failure to do so will affect your grade. GOOGLE DOCS DISTRIBUTION OF GRADES GRADING SCALE You will use your Escambia School District Google account or your personal Google account to complete, share, and peer evaluate essays and other writing assignments for this course. Using Google Docs is economically and environmentally sensible. Essays = 50% of final grade Written final exam = 20% of final grade Quizzes, tests, grammar and rhetorical principles exam, and other writing = 30% of final grade NOTE: Pre-class preparation, in-class participation, and attendance also affect final grade = A = B = B = C = C = D = D Below 60 = F

2 MAKE-UP AND PENALTIES CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT CLASS ATTENDANCE ESSAY FORMAT PLAGIARISM DISABLED STUDENTS LAST NOTE When absent, you not the instructor are responsible immediately upon return to class to arrange make-up and turn in missed work. 1. Tests/quizzes: any test or quiz not made up after one week will receive a zero grade. 2. Essays: late essays are penalized ten percent per class day late. 3. Other homework assignments: late or incomplete homework assignments will receive a zero. Many of our classroom sessions will be group work. Teacher will facilitate and monitor student discussions, peer essay evaluation and editing, and other group exercises. Class environment might be casual; however, students are expected to focus on their task and work diligently. Do not bring food or drink to class. Do not use cellular phones during class unless the instructor approves their use for a particular class assignment. Students may not leave the class before dismissal. Leaving early or coming to class late will affect your grade. You are expected to attend all classes and are responsible for all information and assignments given in class whether or not you were present. Multiple absences might result in your withdrawal from class. If you must withdraw from class, do so before the deadline set in your PSC course schedule; after the deadline, you can expect to receive a grade of F rather than a W. All graded essays must follow MLA format instructions (sections 56c-d, pages in LB Brief). A brief overview of format: have 1 inch margins, double space, and use 12-font Times New Roman. Turning in work written by someone else or copying from others (including verbatim or paraphrased material from the Internet) without making appropriate citations is plagiarism. Penalties can range from a zero on the assignment, to a failing grade in the course, to expulsion from the College. Instructors may assign an early F for the course if a student has been found to have cheated/plagiarized. This includes cheating on an exam or project or submitting a plagiarized document. Students with a disability that falls under the American Disability Act should notify the instructor and Disabled Student Services to discuss any special needs or equipment necessary to accomplish the requirements for this course. 3 Class Schedule and Assignments LB = The Little, Brown Handbook Note #1: Class work might be adjusted based on learning necessities and commanding circumstances. Note #2: Specific dates will be assigned to your weekly homework assignments below. The weekly critical-evaluation report is due every Friday. Week 1 (8/17-8/21) Note: all homework assignments are to be completed before class begins for the day they are due. Expect reading quizzes when reading is assigned. Read LB, Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Critical evaluation of assigned article, essay, or reading passage #1 (due every Friday). Week 2 (8/24-8/28) Read LB, Chapter 7 (pp ). reading passage #2. Week 3 (8/31-9/4) Complete a first rough draft for paper 1. Be prepared to share your draft with teacher and peers (see sections 56c-d, pages in LB Brief for typing format). reading passage #3. Week 4 (9/8-9/11) Monday (9/7) is Labor Day. Complete paper 1. Share your final essay reading passage #4. Week 5 (9/14-9/18) Read LB, Chapters 17, 23, and 24. Complete rough draft for paper 2, narrative; be prepared to share your draft with teacher and peers. Study for punctuation test. reading passage #5. Introduction to course; diagnostic essay; LB, Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5: The Writing Process: Purpose and Audience; Thesis and Organization; Drafting, Revising, and Editing; Punctuation/Mechanics highlight. The Writing Process: Paragraph Coherence and Development; Introductions and Conclusions; Informal writing/peer review; Begin work on paper 1 rough draft. Group work: peer evaluate first draft; Work on final draft for paper 1. Narrative Elements/Using Dialogue; Complete and peer evaluate narrative framework; Begin work on narrative (paper 2). Punctuation/Mechanics Test; Introduction to phrases and clauses; Writing exercise incorporating phrases and clauses effectively; Group work: peer evaluate rough draft of narrative; Introduction to research and MLA citations; Introduction to Library of Congress (LOC) and to LOC s prints and photographs.

Week 7 (9/28-10/2) Complete image analysis and prepare for typing paper 3 in class. Review for Sentence Fluency Test. Read LB, Chapters16 and 18. reading passage #7. Week 8 (10/5-10/9) Read LB, Chapters 19 and 20. Read LB, Chapter 13. Bring a favorite poem. reading passage #8. Sentence Fluency: incorporating phrases and clauses in writing; Sentence fluency writing practice; Group work: LOC s image analysis present image analysis to class; Introduction to comparison/contrast essay; Group work: comparison/contrast of LOC images. Sentence Fluency Test; Paper 3: comparison/contrast, in-class writing using Google Docs. You must share your essay with instructor by the end of class. Clarity and Style: Parallelism and Word Choice. Clarity and Style: Parallelism and Word Choice cont.; Clarity and Style: Completeness and Conciseness; Introduction to literary analysis; Group work: literary analysis. Week 9 (10/13-10/16) Monday (10/12) is Columbus Day. Review for Clarity and Style Test. Complete a literary analysis report. reading passage #9. Week 10 (10/19-10/23) Read two articles posted on classroom website: Lars Von Trier on Dogville and Dogville and Economics. reading passage #10. Week 11 (10/26-10/30) Read Dogville, by Lars von Trier. Complete literary analysis paper proposal (for paper 4). Complete rough draft for paper 4, literary analysis; be prepared to share your draft with teacher and peers. reading passage #11. Watch Dogville; note taking and group discussion; Work on literary analysis paper proposal (for paper 4). Revise and peer evaluate literary essay proposal; Work on first draft; Introduction to writing arguments and argument fallacies.

Writing arguments: inductive and deductive reasoning; Complete writing practice using both inductive and deductive reasoning to conceptualize a claim; Argument fallacies. Week 13 (11/9-11/13) Wednesday (11/11) is Veterans Day. Complete argument fallacies in print media assignment. reading passage #13. Usage: verbs, pronouns, modifiers; Propaganda and Persuasion in the Mass Media; Group discussion and peer evaluation of persuasive writing. Week 14 (11/16-11/20) Study for test on argument fallacies. Read LB, Chapters 26, 27, 30, and 34. Bring two scholarly articles to use in your argumentative essay. LAST critical evaluation of assigned article, essay, or reading passage #14. Test on argument fallacies; Usage: verbs, pronouns, modifiers; Propaganda and Persuasion in the Mass Media; Work on argumentative essay frame work (for paper 5, in-class writing). Week 15 (11/23-24) Wednesday-Friday is Thanksgiving Break Complete preparation for paper 5 (persuasive essay, in-class writing). Paper 5: persuasive, in-class writing using Google Docs. You must share your essay with instructor by the end of class. Week 16 (11/30-12/4) Review for test on Usage: Verbs, Pronouns, Modifiers. Read LB, Chapters 29 and 31. Week 17 (12/7-12/11) Review for test on Agreement. Read LB, Chapter 14. Week 18 (12/14-12/18) Study for final examination. Test on Usage: Verbs, Pronouns, Modifiers; Agreement: subject/verb and pronoun antecedent. Test on Agreement; Public writing: business letters and résumés. Final examination expectations/review. Final Examination Objective Portion/Final Examination Essay.
