1 YORK UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF LANGUAGES, LITERATURES AND LINGUISTICS ITALIAN STUDIES PROGRAM AS/IT Elementary Italian Course Description This course is designed for students with no previous formal training in Standard Italian. This course teaches speaking, listening, reading and writing skills through the study of elementary grammar, the practice of vocabulary, intonation, and pronunciation. Quizzes may or may not be announced by your instructor. Lecture material as well as workbook and MLC/Online work will be included on both tests and quizzes. FINAL ORAL PRESENTATION OR INTERVIEW Your instructor will provide details, expectations, and dates etc. for this component. Class Attendance and Active Participation This is an obligatory and cornerstone component of language courses and cannot be made up with any other component of the course. Students are expected to attend all lectures to derive the greatest benefit from cumulative language learning. Active participation = being prepared for class, completing all exercises to facilitate taking up homework, completing all assignments on time, participating in group work done in class and in lab etc. Students who miss more than 5 classes in the year will receive an automatic participation grade of F.

2 2 MLC/ONLINE MULTIMEDIA ASSIGNMENTS Prego! 7 th Edition includes an Online ActivityPak designed to help students practice their language skills outside of the classroom. This is an essential part of learning a new language. Each textbook includes a Password that grants access to the online learning centre There is an online VIDEOTECA component to Prego! Students will be expected to hand in a variety of online assignments, quizzes etc. throughout the year based on this material. Work to be completed in the Prego! 7 LABORATORY MANUAL should parallel the work done in class. This includes listening comprehension exercises, dictations, reading practice, short written assignments, and website exercises. Be prepared for dictations and other quizzes on MLC work at regular intervals. THIS MATERIAL IS AVAILABLE IN THE MLC (see below) or from any computer with QUICKTIME. MULTIMEDIA LANGUAGE CENTRE The Multimedia Language Centre, also known as the MLC, is a DROP-IN facility only. Registration is not required, and students will be accommodated on a FIRST-COME, FIRST SERVED basis only. Students are responsible to check for available times. Students will be asked to return CDs, logout and leave a half hour prior to closing time. Please observe the rules and regulations posted for the use of the MLC. Materials covered in the MLC sessions will be included in tests and classroom activities. MISSING SCHEDULED IN-CLASS ASSIGNMENTS AND/OR TESTS If you are absent for any scheduled in-class assignments such as a quiz, a dictation, a composition, group work, and in-class TESTS, you will automatically receive a grade of F=0. You will NOT be given an opportunity to make up this work. However, if the absence is justified with appropriate documentation**the grade may be adjusted accordingly. Please note that in cases where students face serious, on-going and irresolvable difficulties affecting coursework and compulsory attendance, the University recommends that they drop courses and, if required, withdraw from the academic session entirely. 3 3 SELF-STUDY In order to progress and achieve success in language courses, students are required to set aside an appropriate amount of time for self-study. This consists of scheduling regular intervals of time, on a day-to-day basis, for the purpose of: working with electronic materials in the MLC and from home reviewing and organizing class notes completing textbook & workbook exercises self-correcting exercises with the use of answer keys, where applicable preparing study charts and studying Your instructor will assign textbook and workbook exercises on a chapter-by-chapter basis and is available, during office hours, to assist you with coursework and/or organizational skills. INSTRUCTOR S OFFICE HOURS & USE OF Each instructor provides you with their availability during office hours and post these hours outside their door. You are responsible for setting up an appointment and keeping that appointment in order to discuss coursework difficulties and/or request coursework assistance. Please note: Students who complete this course with a minimum grade of C qualify for direct entry into Italian language and literatures courses at the 2000-level. Students who complete elementary, intermediate and advanced Italian language courses with a minimum of B qualify for a Certificate in Italian Proficiency.
