Vistas: Introducción a la lengua española. 4th edition. Blanco/Donley; Boston: In addition to textbook the required packet includes: 2.Vistas Workbook/Video Manual; 3.Laboratory Manual (and DVD), 4. Passkey code to supersite (online). Important note re: textbooks: No older editions acceptable Spanish 001 covers Lessons 1-6 REQUIRED- Bring the textbook and Workbook/Video Manual to class each day! The Laboratory Manual is to be done as Homework and isn t required in class until assigned due date STUDENTS MUST HAVE THEIR OWN BOOKS AND MAY NOT SHARE. YOU WILL NOT PASS THIS COURSE WITHOUT A BOOK. Any student who does not have his book will be dismissed from class for that day and lose participation points. Do not throw the Supersite code away- it is inside the book in an envelope. You need this to sign up for the online supersite and this course, in order to access the cyber homework, assessments, MP3 Audio Files and Streaming Media (Videos) which are required to complete the Laboratory Manual and Video Workbook assignments). This will be explained in class. You will need your textbook the 1st day of class. Access Vistas Website in order to see assignments (under PRACTICE and ASSESSMENT) Books on reserve in the Library and ASU: copies of Workbook/Video Manual and Laboratory Manual (Lecciones 1-6) are accepted but must be put into a binder with pages in order and numbered. Please note there are multiple sections required in the Workbook/Video Manual that require access to Vistas Supersite to complete. 1

2 Homework and Assessments also will be assigned on the site so you must purchase a Key code and enroll in the course online. This will be explained and demonstrated in class the first days of class. This demo will not be repeated. Welcome to Spanish 00! I hope that this will be an exciting and positive experience for you at ELAC. Please keep this syllabus and refer to it when you have questions. You can access it on ACE and the Vistas Supersite if you lose it. Turn it in with your final exam for 5 points of extra credit. Class Procedure : Be respectful!!! It is expected that students will come to class ALREADY prepared for class activities by having read at home, studied the grammar, and learning the vocabulary in addition to completing exercises and all assignments. Do not expect to learn by merely sitting through class and not being prepared, or copying down homework answers in class. Class time will be devoted to practice, application and production of language. There will be oral and written practice in the class in Spanish. Books must always be brought to class every day and may not be shared. YOU CANNOT PASS THE COURSE WITHOUT YOUR OWN BOOK. Students will be assigned HW on a daily basis. Learning a new language requires intense study, memorization and practice, so consider the five units and heavy study load this intensive course demands. Cultural and video sections of the textbook/lab manual are homework and will be included in exams/quizzes! Work from the textbook, handouts and students notes are NOT collected but gone over in class. Note: this course teaches Formal, Standard Spanish, and students will be tested on the vocabulary in the text, not other colloquial variations (e.g. slang or Spanglish ). No make-ups, no late homework and no prior arrangements or make-ups on exams. No exceptions! The only homework which is collected for points is the Laboratory Manual and the Activity Video Workbook, in addition to online HW and online quizzes and exams. Course Description and Objectives: Spanish 001 concentrates upon developing basic skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing of STANDARD SPANISH at the elementary level for non-spanish speaking students. Emphasis is placed on acquisition of vocabulary, structures and grammatical patterns necessary for comprehension of 2

3 spoken and written standard Spanish at the novice level. Structures presented include the simple present tense in the indicative mode, the preterit. Spanish and Latin-American culture will be taught and tested in this class through film, lecture and on-line activities. Spanish cultural material is included in the exams and quizzes. This course continues the introduction of the fundamentals of Spanish grammar, emphasizing communication of basic topics. The course stresses oral and written communication in the present simple tenses, and introduces the preterit. Further studies on the cultural heritage of Latin America and Spain enrich the student s understanding of the language. Course goals Student Learning Outcomes: At the end of the course, the student will be able to: 1. Communicate through reading, writing, speaking and listening in Spanish at the novice level. 2. Analyze the relationship between perspectives, practices and products of the Spanish culture at the novice level Motivational information Tips on succeeding in the course: Vistas Supersite offers a guided tour of the website that will help students set up and navigate the supersite. Check out: ent Suggestion: get another classmates address and make study-buddy relationships Most A and B students sit near the front, take notes, ask questions, volunteer and participate without prompting! Consider the heavy study load and time required to pass a 5 unit language course in four weeks time. If you are unable to dedicate the time and effort required to attending and completing all requirements, perhaps you should not take this course. Also, the internet assignments are a vital part of the grade, so if you do not want to work online, consider a different instructor who does not assign these elements. More than 1 absence will result in a drop of 10% to the final grade as 1 day=5 days in a normal 15 week semester. NOTE: Do not expect a grade that you do not earn. The points are added up and assigned into a grade as is spelled out clearly in the syllabus. It is NOT based only on test scores or students sitting in a seat in class. Some students may try to pressure an instructor into a sympathetic grade based upon a special case story but this is not ethical. The grade is based upon the student effort, participation, attitude, attendance and exam scores. It is not fair to pressure an instructor by comments such as: It s going to ruin my life if I don t get an A or I have 3

4 to pass this class to graduate or get financial aid. If those things are true, then a student would do better to actually put his/her effort into studying! This does not make for an unsympathetic Instructor. Rather, it does mean that personal responsibility is an important lesson to learn before entering the workplace. No one will pay you if you don t go to work, or do a good job. This applies to school! There are no make-ups for exams, quizzes or homework in this class so please, don t ask! If you decide to drop the course, make sure that you take care of the paperwork in Admissions yourself, as any names left on the roster at the end of the semester will be given a failing grade. To get a grade above a D requires that ALL homework and class work assignments be completed and turned in on time. Spanish speaking students should enroll in either Spanish 35 or 36. If you somehow were able to get into this class, which is intended for non-spanish speakers, and you are bored because you speak the language, do not ruin the class for others who are interested in learning. You will not necessarily get an easy A just because you speak and /or write with some level of fluency. Many Heritage speakers struggle with the course and are surprised to end up with a lower grade than they expected. Please ask the Instructor to help you with placement in a different course if you speak Spanish, which will meet your academic needs. Additional requirements: 1. Spiral-bound notebooks for homework and class work for text exercises, writing assignments, red or green pen for correcting homework in class; 3. Scantron answer sheets for exams: TBA 4. 5 Attendance and tardiness Class Attendance/ Participation/ Oral/Written: Attendance is mandatory and directly linked to participation grade. More than 1 unexcused absences during the semester will result in lowering your final grade by one entire grade. Excused absences are documented emergencies. Students who miss more than 3 days will be excluded from the class Being tardy and leaving early may count as one unexcused absence. It is the student's obligation to notify the Instructor as soon as possible re: absences and tardiness, or when experiencing difficulty with course material. Students are expected to stay for the entire duration of the class and not leave during breaks. You will be marked as ABSENT if you leave before class ends, unless by prior arrangement with instructor. Any student that is absent should not expect to make up any work or exams and is responsible for finding out what was taught or assigned in class. But I was absent is not an excuse to get special dispensation from requirements. Students are not allowed to use computers to take notes in class. No dictionaries are allowed during a test Participation in discussion or activities: Required. It includes oral participation in class activities, focus, and attention when other classmates speak or ask questions. Speaking will be evaluated on a day to day basis in the classroom, including oral presentations, dictations and other activities. Oral Components: There will be mini-presentations, dialogues, improvisations, current event reports, and discussions etc, assigned in class. These will be graded based upon spoken ability and aural comprehension, based upon grammar and vocabulary Oral presentation: Topics and procedures TBA in class from the textbook. Students will not earn participation points if they refuse to speak in class. Students not on task or paying attention also lose participation points. These points are earned and not given by the Instructor. Directly relates to the Attendance grade. 5

6 Civility/code of conduct : Respectful and appropriate attitude, attire, and behavior in a college classroom is absolutely required. DO NOT : wear a hoody or sunglasses in class engage in talking during class time. disrupt or sleep,during films do other work from a different class, talk on cell phones, text or use headphones go in and out the classroom during instruction talk during lectures/activities or engage in activities or interruptions Begin packing up to leave the class before being dismissed by the instructor Be late to a test or leave room during exams as you will get a failing grade Cheat on exams make fun of other students accents come to class late ask questions during a lecture until the END when the Instructor asks for them choose to not participate in group or pair activities that are mainly involving speaking or you will dismissed forget your textbook or you will be dismissed from class for that day and lose points! Cell phones, and other electronic devices. Use of Cell phones, I-pods, headphones, and other electronic devices is absolutely prohibited during class time, including taking photos or text-messaging. Using laptops to take notes in not allowed in this class. Food: only beverages are allowed in class Academic integrity (check college Web site): Please refer to the sheet on Student Conduct and Academic Integrity (also in Schedule of Classes) and be advised that misconduct will be reported to the Dean of Student Services according to the College requirements with possible serious disciplinary measures. A word about Cheating: Students caught cheating will be given a grade of F on the assignment/exam/quiz and referred to the Dean of Student Services for academic discipline. Students will be referred to Dean of Student Services and not allowed to attend class until the issue is resolved. Don t cheat- it is not worth ruining your academic career! Class notes/handouts availability: You should take notes or write them in textbook. Handouts and Notes are NOT collected but for students own study purposes so do not turn them in unless the Instructor announces 6

7 that they are required. Seating options: students initially may sit wherever they feel comfortable but encouraged to sit near the front. In the event of discipline problems (such as talking) a seating chart will be implemented as needed. GRADING: Grading criteria, weight of assignments/ exams: A. EXAMS: 2 x 100 pts: 1 Midterm and 1 Final= 200: 50% Be on time to exam and bring pencil or scantron if required. Late and unprepared students lose 10% of points on each exam. Oral sections will be repeated 3x. if you are late you miss out and don t ask for it to be repeated. Exams are a combination of multiple choice and writing in paragraphs or fill in the blank. Cultural and online topics and videos may be included in each test There will be quizzes on each lesson, included in the exam grade B. Participation and Attendance: 10% C. Homework: 40% (Please refer to chart at end of syllabus: To be collected before last day of instruction. Date : Each of the following is weighted at equal value: 1. Workbook/Video Manual: Lessons 1-6ALL SECTIONS. Bring to class with textbook daily. Video sections done as HW. Grammar done as HW and in class as required by Instructor. 2. Laboratory Manual: Lessons 1-6 to be done as HW and turned in at the end of the semester. 3. On-line: Practices, activities, writing assignments, Recapitulacion (Review) and Quiz. This is intended for practice and to provide feedback to students re: errors. Mistakes in grammar, punctuation and accent marks are counted by the software but do not reflect your grade. Graded for completion. Scores under 60% recieve no credit. To be explained in class. Please Note: Textbook exercises will be gone over in class, but generally not collected for points-but this does not mean you should skip the exercise because the Instructor will do period checks to make sure students are completing the work in the textbook Due dates, submission procedures: Will be explained in detail in class. The Workbook and Lab Manual are collected before the last day of instruction. Online dates are listed on the website. All HW is graded for completion (points) and not perfection but students must correct it in class as we go over it. Textbook exercises are gone over in class but generally not collected. Final Exam Dates TBA: LAST DAY OF 7

Cheating will not be tolerated. Instructions are in Spanish and English on exams. HW packets receive either 100% or 0 Disability services/ accommodation policies: DSPS students are encouraged to identify themselves to the instructor and can take exams in DSPS office as needed. Learning assistance center (or support) may have Spanish tutors. F.L. Dept does not provide tutors. Or follow these instructions: Setting up your VISTAS4E Supersite account and enrolling in your Instructor's course: Overview In order to see and submit your assignments, receive important announcements, and communicate with your Instructor, you will need an account, a Supersite code, and you will need to enroll in your Instructor's course. RETURNING STUDENTS: If you have an existing account for VHLCentral, for your textbook's Supersite, or for another Vista Higher Learning textbook, complete these steps: Go to VHLCentral (the link will open in a new window): vhlcentral.com. Log in using your existing account information. To redeem a new Supersite code, click the "Redeem a code" link. Then complete the items below in "Step 3 - Activate Code" of the NEW STUDENTS section. To enroll in your Instructor's course, click the "Enroll in a course" link. Then complete the items below in "Step 5 - Select a Course/Class" of the NEW STUDENTS section. NEW STUDENTS: If you are new to Vista Higher Learning, complete these steps: Step 1 - Go to VHLCentral To begin, go to vhlcentral.com (the link will open in a new window). Step 2 - Create an Account In the "Login Information" section of the account creation page, enter a username of your choice. Enter the address you would like to associate with your account. Enter and confirm a password of your choice. In the "Personal Profile" section, 8

9 enter your first and last name as you wish them to appear in your Instructor's roster. Select the year of your birth from the drop down list. Enter a student ID (optional). In the "Security Information" section, you will provide the answer to a secret question, which may later be used to help you access your account if you forget your password. After you enter all of the information, click "create an account." Click "agree." (Before your account is created, you must agree to the terms and conditions of use policy.) Step 3 - Activate Code On the code activation screen, enter your Supersite code. Click "activate code" to continue. Look for a flash alert confirming that the code was successfully redeemed. Step 4 - Select a School Locate your school by typing your school s name. To narrow the search results, include the city and state (or country, if outside of the USA) in which your school is located. Click "find." If the terms you entered did not result in a successful search, follow the on-screen tips to revise your search. Select your school from the list by clicking the radio button next to the school name. Click "select school" to add the school to your account. Look for a flash alert confirming you successfully added the school. Step 5 - Select a Course/Class From the list of available classes at your school for your textbook's Supersite, look for Instructor "Maga" and the course "Spanish 002 Fall 2012 section 1341 Click the radio button for the course section "Section 1." If more than one class is listed for your Instructor, click the information icons in the class listings until you locate the section. Click Save. You should see a confirmation that you successfully enrolled in your instructor's course. Note:Students having difficulty with anything related to the class should consult with the Professor before dropping the class. Tutors are available in the Learning Center.
