School Oct-2013 E-Mobility in a nutshell Peter Van Den Heede Eric Gielen
Overview Electric vehicles, or "e-mobility" as it is called in many countries, seems to be a valid option which cannot be negated this time. Almost every country has an ambitious program on "e-mobility" projects. Pure demonstration projects and research programs to support these demonstrations. It is clear that there is also a market potential for Flanders. This thematic group focuses on the challenges and particularly the opportunities that this new market entails.
Overview Thematic Group: E Mobility An information & networking event from Smart Grids Flanders Core focus: All aspects related to Electric Vehicles and e-mobility When: 4-5 times a year Participants: per event. Location: Hosted by an SGF member or linked to another event. Informative: 3 to 4 spreakers in each session Networking opportunity at coffee & lunch breaks
Participants +/- 550 Participants over 18 meetings Mixed profiles: Technical, commercial & general Mgt. Industrial & research community Wide range of compagnies of EV Value Chain

General Context Resource Scarcity and Replacing Oil as a Strategic Commodity Volatility of fuel prices is increasing => Political and economical instability increasing as well. EU tightens the emission norms. Evolution is incremental. No immediate breaktrough. Car manufacturers sees EVs as a way to meet overall emission targets. Slow down? Due to new gaz resources?
General Context Status Battery technologie > Cost -> Range anxiety Solutions needed to solve the settlement when energy charging from different E-suppliers. Real interoperability. Transaction cost for charging of 5 to 20 kwh? Several standards: Chademo Combo -..
General Context
General Context
General Context Electricity production capacity in Flanders and industrialised countries is low > max 2% increase Transmission grid capacity in Flanders is OK, New connection to other EU Countries are planned Distribution grid in Flanders aren t strong enough for a massive introduction of EVs. A Smart Grid can bring the solution
EV Grid impact 1 car average: 2-4 MWh/year 15,000 km/year 4-7km/kWh Limited increase of total electricity consumption Belgium: 90 TWh/year 1 million Evs: less than 4 % increase Significant impact on local level Doubling of electric energy consumption of households Increase in peak power if not coordinated Local level, when high local penetration grade High level, when high av. penetration grade occurs
General Context There is a big diversity in the grid topology. Some points are weak. Purchases of EVs will not be equally balanced over the grid. => Preparations are needed for the arrival & integration of EV s EV s can help to stabilise the Grid due to their ability to store energy.
General Context Many pilot projects are running or are finished in several countries. Roll out of Charging infrastructure started in many countries as Estonia, Ireland, Denmark, Norway, In most countries most of the trips can be executed with an EV. Cars are 90% of the time parked. Large companies like Sony, GE, ABB, Schneider, IBM, are very active in R&D and productoffering for e-mobility. Automotive companies ( Renault/Nissan,PSA, VW, BMW,.) develop a fully e-mobility offering.
General Context
General Context
General Context
Potential benefits of EVs & Smart Grids Charging of EVs has some flexibility shift the charging in time Batteries are not depleted every day charging time < max charging time charging time < parking time vary the charging power Use renewable energy source when available Reduce impact excess renewable energy Increase renewable sources installed Contribute to a reduction of variation in electricity production Power plants need less cycling Extend lifetime distribution grid infrastructure Transformer Cables Vehicle to grid
G2V/V2G Use case: Stabilize the Grid The charging of EV s is to a certain extend flexibel The charging decision can be shifted The charging power can be varied
Some Questions What is the impact on the battery lifetime? How to do this without impact on the mobility comfort of the end customer? What is the economical value of such a use case? How could a value chain look like? There are already some answers and solutions however also huge opportunities. Second Life use of EV batteries or recycling?
