2 02 I DNV KEMA SERVING THE ENergY INDUSTRY I Smart Cities I THE SMART IMPERATIVE Cities everywhere want to be attractive places to live, economicaly thriving and environmentally sustainable. Yet, in an increasingly urbanized world, they face huge pressures. These include growing demand on water, energy, heating & cooling, waste, transportation, and data and telecommunications networks. That s why, for many cities, the future lies in becoming smart. Every day, 180,000 people around the world move to urban areas By 2015, 70 percent of the world s 9 billion people will live in cities Cities account for 60 percent of the world s water consumption, 75 percent of its energy demand and 80 percent of greenhouse gas emissions How do you tackle challenges like these? Smart cities integrate networked infrastructures where smart buildings, active, energyefficient lighting and heating & cooling systems continuously adapt to available energy resources. Energy storage and exchange are embedded in these infrastructures. Transportation is a service and energy consumer, but also a provider of storage through the batteries in electric trains, trams and cars. Waste becomes a resource, feeding products like biogas into the grid. Ubiquitous information technology manages these systems. It also acts as a driver for business development and job creation, as well as supporting high-quality services in areas like education, health and community cohesion. City life is comfortable and prosperous, with strong social bonds. GLOBAL EXPERIENCE DNV KEMA Energy & Sustainability works with public agencies worldwide from China to Brazil, from the California Independent System Operator to the Sorcer sustainable energy program of the European Union. We are also a key player in smart grid and smart city test-beds. For instance, our smart grid consulting professionals developed the vision, business case and implementation plan for MeppelEnergie, a Dutch neighbourhood sustainable energy system program integrating combined heat and power plants and aquifer thermal energy storage using biogas and heat extracted from the area s waste water treatment plant.

3 I Smart Cities I DNV KEMA SERVING THE energy INDUSTRY I 03 Mastering your vision Whether on a greenfield site or in a existing city, turning your smart city vision into reality starts with a master plan. Creating and implementing such a plan is a complex task involving multiple stakeholders; social, economic and technical innovation; and major investments. It starts with defining your community s goals and how to translate these into an economically and technically viable plan. What are the necessary infrastructure architecture and specifications? DNV KEMA understands these challenges. We regularly work with utilities and government agencies on sustainable community developments and state-of-the-art solutions across the energy value chain. Acting as an impartial partner and project manager, we can support you in creating a safe, sustainable future for your city. Our proprietary simulation and business modelling tools let you evaluate: Potential costs, return on investment and system integration needs Building occupancy behaviors in response to pricing, comfort and improved electricity and gas supply reliability Innovative market mechanisms such as energy trading within smart grids Total energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission impacts of different investment choices REMOVING RISK, TESTING PERFORMANCE Inevitably, smart city projects involve risks, small and large. What is the financial impact of pursuing operational savings through specific technologies, building designs or infrastructures? What about performance and reputational risk and cyber security? With over a century of risk management expertise, DNV KEMA helps you identify and manage all these factors. Plus, with world-leading testing & certification facilities, we can improve certainty that integrated infrastructure systems and innovative technologies will perform safely and robustly in the real world.

6 06 I DNV KEMA SERVING THE ENergY INDUSTRY I Smart Cities I SMart integration Integrating gas, electricity, cooling, heat, water, transport and telecommunications infrastructures is at the heart of the Smart City concept. For instance, combining conventional energy sources with renewable resources and waste heat recovery in smart grids can significantly increase energy efficiency. But what are the economics? What role do buildings and renewable energy sources play in production and consumption? How can you incorporate plug-in electric vehicles, electricity storage capacity and more? DNV KEMA lets you see the complete picture above the scale of specific utility or consumer concerns. Our integration expertise extends from heating and cooling technologies and business models, to transport systems, water handling and air quality control. Moreover, based on our experience in energy infrastructure management, strategic planning and advanced modelling tools, we can work with you, utilities and technology partners to: Manage risk exposure Explore market modes in which consumers are also producers Assess competing scenarios and business case projections Secure effective and efficient deployment Design and develop interoperable architectures We can also help you address crucial issues of stability, sand safety in smart grids testing the reliability and interoperability of technologies, equipment and appliances from multiple suppliers. The DNV KEMA Smart Grid Interoperability Lab offers a unique controlled working environment to assess individual devices, or test entire systems and networks. At our Flex Power Grid laboratory, we focus on power electronics, the essential technologies for connecting appliances and renewable sources to smart grids. The Flex Power Grid lab can evaluate their impact on power quality and grid stability, as well as conformity to existing and emerging industry standards. Smart grid leadership DNV KEMA participates in leading smart grid initiatives worldwide: Organiser of the Annual Utility of the Future Leadership Forum, United States Member of Smart Energy Collective, Europe Leadership positions in key smart grid organizations such as the GridWise Alliance, the U.S. Department of Energy s Electricity Advisory Committee, and the Global Smart Grid Federation

7 I Smart Cities I DNV KEMA SERVING THE energy INDUSTRY I 07 INtelligent solutions for sustainable buildings A city is nothing without its buildings. Yet, they are also one of the biggest energy efficiency challenges. In the United States alone, buildings account for over 70 percent of the nation s electricity consumption and about 40 percent of carbon dioxide emissions. However, incorporating sustainable design strategies into large building projects and community policies is often seen as expensive and complex. But it does not have to be. DNV KEMA works with municipalities to integrate sustainable strategies into building design, construction and commissioning in timeand cost-effective ways. On individual projects, we work with you to define green strategies for healthy, high-performance buildings with low or even no carbon impact. That includes designing for certification such as LEED and BREEAM. On large-scale multibuilding sites, we help you address the complex interconnected issues of energy, water, waste water and carbon emissions. Our whole systems approach combines knowledge of building systems and technologies, design, and construction processes, with expertise in integrating them all helping to ensure projects support your city-wide objectives. Constructing sustainability DNV KEMA is a key participant in numerous sustainable building projects. These include the European Union 7th Framework NEXT-Buildings project, to demonstrate how low energy buildings can be active components of energy systems. And we coordinate PowerMatchingCity, a living lab smart grid demonstration in the Netherlands, balancing energy supply and demand in a grid of interconnected households and electric vehicles. This project has been so successful that PowerMatchingCity has been incorporated in the UN Sustainia 100 in autumn Sustainia 100 is a prestigious list of over a hundred examples worldwide that provide viable ddssolutions for a more sustainable future.
