3 What is Happening This Month... Congratulations to our Seniors! Seniors we would like to congratulate you on all of your success. You have worked very hard and it has paid off. We wish you luck as you enter the Nursing Career field and good luck with all of your endeavors. The Commencement ceremony will be held at the World Arena on Friday, May 23, The ceremony for College of Letters, Arts & Sciences will occur at 11:30 a.m. The Beth-El College of Nursing & Health Sciences, College of Business, College of Education, College of Engineering & Applied Science and the School of Public Affairs will occur at 3:30 p.m. The Pinning ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2014 from 8:30-11 in Berger Hall. If you would like to join in the celebration of our fantastic seniors please feel free to come. Hello Folks! School is winding down (or up for some of us) and summer is near. We are still looking to wrangle some cowgirls (and boys) to volunteer for this year s Pike Peaks or Bust Rodeo. The dates are July 9th 12th. There are four shifts and shift hours are 5pm 10 pm. I have commitments for Thursday and Friday nights. I am looking for approximately 8 more people for Wednesday and Saturday. I need a minimum of 4 people each night and Wednesday and Saturday nights are still wide open. We can still use people on Thursday and Friday but there are a limited number of spots available for these nights. Volunteers will be working in the VIP room (2nd floor of the Norris Penrose Event Center, overlooking the arena) replacing food on the buffet line, refilling water, and clearing plates. Volunteers are fed dinner and are encouraged to enjoy the live music, dancing, and mechanical bull riding in the Circle after the Rodeo. The best perk of volunteering is you ll receive a custom designed Beth-El/Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo t-shirt for your participation. A little blurb about the Rodeo The Colorado Springs community has enjoyed the Pikes Peak Rodeo for the last 74 years. Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo is a grass roots organization that is heavily involved in local benevolent acts. All money generated by the Rodeo is donated to local military charities, yep you head that right ALL money. This is an exciting opportunity for students. You have an opportunity to help support our local military, the people that put themselves on the front line for us. Please contact Courtney James at cjames2@uccs.edu to reserve your spot at this year s Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo. Commitments are needed by May 10th.
4 AHA Beth-El Statement Your involvement in needed. Approximately 1,200 people in the Colorado Springs area suffer from a heart related incident each year. The American Heart Association (AHA) reported that 964 people died from cardiovascular disease and 190 people died from stroke in our community in one year. The AHA reports that heart disease and stroke are 80% preventable. The Colorado Springs community s population is nearing half a million (500,000). We need to act now to combat the rise of cerebral vascular and cardiovascular accidents in our community. The American Journal of Health Promotion first coined the term health promotion in 1986 and defined it as the science and art of helping people change their lifestyle to move toward a state of optimal health. As nursing students, we are charged with the task of promoting health. Our role as nurses is not limited to a hospital or clinic; our patient teaching extends to our community. We as nursing students are on the front line of this movement for a healthier America. Our involvement with this year s Heart Walk encompasses our duties as nursing students. Our community needs your help. The Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Science is forming a unified team for this year s Heart Walk. Here s how you can be an advocate for a healthier Colorado Springs and a healthier America: 1. Sign up to walk with the team by registering with our Beth-El Team on the website: =938A32C8577A4B4182C5BF4C22C9E5EC&supId= &team= Busy that day? Donate money in support of our team at the website above. Please join us on Saturday morning June 14, 2014 on the UCCS main lawn to draw attention to heart disease and stroke. Walk a 5k with Beth-El staff, faculty, and students and other members of our community to benefit research to reduce heart disease and stroke in our community. Recruit your family and friends to walk with us. Habitat for Humanity There is a Habitat for Humanity Build day coming up! Please join us on Thursday, June 5 from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm. If anyone is interested in volunteering or has any questions, please Elizabeth at emueller@uccs.edu
