2 Page 2 Infinite Wisdom Honors Seminar: What It s About One of the requirements to graduate as an Honors Student is to pass two Honors Seminar courses. Since seminars aren t required for any other course, most students have no idea what seminars are about. According to Dr. Watkins, In a lecture-based course, the instructor is the expert who imparts their knowledge to students from the podium. It might be thought of as a oneway delivery system. Seminars, This Honors seminar abroad is just one example of the many opportunities that the Honors Program has given me. Libby Lirette on the other hand, are more collaborative between instructor and students. While lecture courses teach parts of a single discipline, seminars are about teaching students to change their viewpoints about a topic. Some seminars try to educate students about the environment, while others teach students about the finer science of brewing beer (21 and up). Wastelands to Wetlands: Seminar by Dr. Jane Caffrey Death of a Goddess: Seminar by Dr. June Watkins Most students don t know about marshes. As citizens, they make decisions that affect the environment. Dr. Caffrey is an Associate Professor at the Center for Environmental Diagnostics and Bioremediation. Her seminar Wastelands to Wetlands combines biology with the cultural aspects of marshlands and swamplands. However, not everything is done in a classroom. Dr. Caffrey encourages field trips to the coast. [They] let students see firsthand the problems with the environment. And we get a wider audience when our seminar requires beach trips. Rather than just lecture the whole class period, Dr. Caffrey prefers to start the class with a lecture of the week s topic, and the rest of the seminar is class discussion. I aim to make students comfortable with literature and interested in wetlands. The most important tool that I would love students to take away from my seminars is how to critically approach an issue. Death of a Goddess is best described as a mixture of disciplines (humanities, anthropology, religious studies) with class discussion. Class time is spent in discussion of a particular issue and so students must prepare out of class in order to participate in the discussion. Students who have taken the course in the past often take away more than just a passing grade. One student shares that Because of her teachings, I now have a more "there's more than one right answer" kind of view. It's something that has stuck with me, and I feel that I am far richer in experience and far better off for it.

3 Page 3 Buddhist Psychology: Seminar by Dr. William Mikulas The second paragraph of the syllabus explains all about the course: Please note that these are not courses in philosophy or religion. Rather, these are practical courses on how to apply the rich Buddhist knowledge to many aspects of daily living. The seminar summarizes the psychology of the various schools of Buddhism, and class time is mostly lecture with small periods of class discussion. Unlike most psychology courses, Dr. Mikulas encourages a lab course. The lab is a 45 minute practice of meditation and concentration, teaching students skills that they can apply day-to-day, for their lifetimes. Runners were entered in a prediction contest: each runner would guess the time it took to finish, and whoever was closest would win. Even though the prizes were given to other racers, the post race party more than made up for it. CINDERELLA: THE OPERA On Friday, March 21 st, Cinderella: The Opera was held at the Civic Center downtown! Dr. Tomso held the 5:00 reception party before the opera began. Students who want to go to the next event should pay attention to the updates: the first 5 Honors students pay $5 for tickets instead of the usual $15! PAINT DAY The Honors Program hosted a Paint Day in Pargo on March 29th. Activities offered ranged from balloon painting, brush painting, bubble wrap painting, straw painting, and more! Students had a great time creating unique pieces of art and making some of the decorations for Honors Formal. Words of Advice: You get out of Honors what YOU put into it.
