History Honor Society History An important part of the vision of the Palm Beach Atlantic University School of Nursing has been to develop an Honor Society of Nursing with the eventual goal of applying for charter status with the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), the only international nursing honor society. In 2011, all members of the SON faculty were members of STTI and the group wanted to explore having their own charter at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Impetus was added in the fall of 2012 as the Palm Beach Atlantic University School of Nursing prepared to start a graduate program, and Dean Joanne Masella believed the time was right to begin preparations for the Honor Society. She selected the SON Faculty Development and Resource Committee (FDRC) to start an Honor Society at the school and to explore the requirements and feasibility of becoming an STTI chapter. Members of the committee began contacting STTI consultants and attending meetings to network with local and regional STTI leaders/members. Dr. Phyllis King, chair of the FDRC, and Dr. Susan Gillan, committee member, were active in STTI and their own chapters of the organization. With information from the STTI website, advice from consultant staff, and encouragement from local, state, and regional leaders, the SON faculty decided to move forward with formation of the Palm Beach Atlantic University Honor Society. The Honor Society Steering Committee was formed in January 2013 with members Dr. Joanne Masella, Dr. Diane Esposito, Dr. Susan Gillan, and Dr. Phyllis King. The first steering committee meeting was held on 18 January At this meeting, committee members decided to proceed into phases one and two using the timeline suggested by STTI. The steering committee chose the chapter structure, obtained verbal support from the institution (specifically
6 the provost and dean of the School of Nursing). Via a conference call, the steering committee reviewed the phased approach with STTI consultant Jenny Hoffman on 8 February The Honor Society Steering Committee made official pre-application for forming a STTI chapter in February 2013 and it was approved on 11 February On 15 and 16 February 2013, Phyllis King and Susan Gillan attended the Region 7 STTI Conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to network with local and regional members of STTI. Regional and local leaders were very encouraging of the PBAU Honor Society Steering Committee plan, and the committee moved forward in planning the first induction ceremony. Final details for the first Honor Society induction ceremony, scheduled for 3 May 2013, were discussed at the steering committee meeting on 5 April The program was finalized consisting of recognition of inductees, keynote speaker, refreshments, and special music. Also, the board of director positions were appointed and accepted: Dr. Phyllis King, President; Dr. Susan Gillan, Vice President; Dr. Lynn Erickson, Secretary; Dr. Christine Brooks, Treasurer; Dr. Diane Esposito, Counselor and Governance Committee Chair; and Dr. Joanne Masella, Leadership Succession Committee Chair. The first Honor Society induction ceremony was held on 3 May At this celebration, 22 seniors from the May 2012 and May 2013 graduating classes, five nurse leaders, and 10 STTI members wishing to join the PBAU Honor Society were inducted/recognized. Nurse leaders were from several area hospitals and facilities, indicating a broad base of interest and support in the area. Following the first induction ceremony, the board decided inductions for senior nursing students would be held in the fall semester each year due to scheduling conflicts with graduation ceremonies in the spring semester. The board of directors met on 9 September 2013 and 27 September 2013 to discuss and finalize details on the second induction ceremony scheduled for 8 November The induction ceremony would include a scholarly program, research posters, presentations and a guest speaker, followed by a business meeting. At the second Honor Society induction ceremony, held on 8 November 2013, 24 seniors from the class of 2014, seven community members, and four faculty members were inducted. The inclusion of the students research posters into the format of the ceremony significantly enhanced the experience. At the called business meeting following the induction ceremony, the budget, plan to apply for charter status, officer reports, and adoption of the bylaws were approved.
7 On November 2013, Dr. Phyllis King and Dr. Susan Gillan attended the 42 nd STTI Biennial Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. At that convention, the board officers attended training sessions for charter leaders and applicants. They also took the opportunity to meet with DeShara Doub and Jenny Hoffman in preparation for phases three and four of the chartering process. King and Gillan reported to the board on the trainings at the 9 December 2013 meeting and the group continued to plan for charter application in spring The board continued to meet in early 2014 to develop mission, vision, and goal statements; identify policies and business strategies; and plan professional, community, and global service opportunities. Opportunities for service came quickly as board members Dr. Lynn Erickson, Dr. Christine Brooks, nurse leader and faculty member Kathy Megrath, and a cohort of student members travelled to El Salvador with the PBAU SON medical mission trip in March The PBAU Honor Society financially supported the trip with water treatment supplies. On 14 April 2014, the Honor Society held the spring induction and research day. One nurse leader was inducted at the meeting and two STTI members joined the PBAU Honor Society. After the induction and recognition, members of the medical mission trip provided a program describing the trip to El Salvador and the work that going on there. A PBAU Honor Society business meeting was held after the program. Actions at the meeting included approval of the budget, update on the plan to apply for charter status in February 2015, and adoption of the bylaws. During the summer of 2014, the board also sent out a call for nominations for the Leadership Succession Committee and a subsequent ballot for the three positions to be filled. Board members attended several training webinars offered by STTI in the summer of The webinars included Expectations of Developing Honor Societies and Chapters; Understanding STTI s Membership Eligibility Criteria; STTI Bylaws 101; and Budgeting: Where to Start. These webinars were very helpful for the developing society. Board members began a membership renewal campaign in August 2014 with various contacts with the society membership. Several board of directors meetings were held in the fall of 2014 primarily focused on membership renewals and the class of 2015 induction ceremony and research day scheduled for 6 November At the third Honor Society induction ceremony and research day, 20 seniors from the
8 class of 2015 and two nurse leaders were inducted into the PBAU Honor Society. Two STTI members were also recognized as joining members of the Honor Society. The Leadership and Succession Committee members elected during the summer were recognized at the meeting as well, consisting of Dr. Joanne Masella (chair), Dr. Donna Murray, and Dr. Patrick Heyman. The current focus of the board of directors is to finalize and submit the application for chapter charter, support another group of society members and students traveling to El Salvador for more medical missions in March, and planning another research and scholarly program event in February. Via conference call, the board of directors reviewed the application status, current documentation, and timeline with an STTI consultant, Jenny Hoffman, on 5 December On 19 February 2015, the PBAU SON Honor Society held their annual nurse leader induction ceremony and research day program. Four nurse leaders from the community were inducted and two HS members presented on their research studies. Dr. Debi Morgan presented her research on Failure to Rescue, an educational intervention study for nursing staff for early identification of patient decline. Dr. Lola Olofin presented her qualitative research study of The Lived Experience of Being a Minority Full Time Faculty Member. The Honor Society board has met several times this spring: 24 April 2015 for a webinar with an STTI liaison for an update on the charter application status; 2 June 2015 to work on officer elections; the fall (6 November 2015) induction ceremony; and the anticipated charter ceremony in spring The board is working closely with the Leadership Succession Committee to identify potential leadership candidates and to inform the membership of service opportunities in the society. Other topics of discussion have been program opportunities, membership involvement, and fundraising.
