1 THE DEAF COLORADAN E - Newsletter July September 2015 PO Box Volume 1 Issue 3 Denver, Colorado CAD Facebook Welcome a new Board Member CAD is pleased to announce our newest Board Member, Swanhilda Lily. Swanhilda has a motivation to provide support to our community in education field and fundraising/special events. Please join us in welcoming Swanhilda. If you are interested to serve with us on the CAD Board of Directors, contact President Jennifer Pfau at cadpresident@gmail.com or Secretary Avis Taylor DuPree at cadsecretary@gmail.com. George Veditz Birthday Party CAD and Veditz Center hosted a party to celebrate George W Veditz s 154 th birthday at Rocky Mountain Deaf School last August 13 th. We provided cake, ice cream & drinks and there was a bounce castle jumper for the kids. There were 4 drawings for prizes. Many thanks to Purple Communication for sponsoring this event. 1
2 Agents of Change Retreat Part 3 August 15-16, 2015 Hosted by Relay Colorado On August 15-16, 2015 the CAD Board Members Paul Simmons, Beverly Buchanan, Avis Taylor DuPree, Larry Pike and CAD member Sabra Carlin attended the other nonprofit retreat that was hosted by AT&T Relay Colorado. A speaker, Erin Adair-Guy of Community Resource Center presented us about finding the right funder by online-funding search tool, grant research and grant seeking process. A deaf speaker, Marilyn J Smith, a founder of Abused Deaf Women s Advocacy Services in Seattle, Washington, gave her presentation about the grant development. She provided us a researching funding sources; how to write the letters; process an application; how to talk to the funders; and the budget. Both Ms. Adair-Guy and Ms. Smith provided us the resources online. CAD wholeheartedly thank Holly Bise for her hard working to arrange this workshop 2
3 Fundraising Events A Good Neighbor s Night Out By Beverly Buchanan On Thursday, September 10 from 6pm-9pm, the deaf community and ASL students from University of Colorado, Colorado Springs meet at Il Vicino. The event was a fundraiser for ASL Club at UCCS and Colorado Association of the Deaf Youth Winter Retreat. Translated from Italian, Il Vicino means The Neighbor and the name is fitting for what we were trying to achieve at this get-together. So with support from Il Vicino, we were able to bring our families & friends for the day of great food and fun! Many people arrived early and left late. ASL students from both the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Community College were in awe to see the signing community and felt they have so much to learn about life. They were glad to meet deaf people and to ask them questions. ASL students wrote reflection papers about their experience with the gathering and would like to see it happen again. The evening was filled with good pizzas, drinks, laughter and sign language. We raised $ and will be split between two organizations: ASL Club at UCCS and Jr CAD 3
4 By Derek Sevier, Chair What a successful and memorial 6 th Annual CAD Oktoberfest event! Monumental thanks to you who joined us to drink a variety of beers, sipping wines, devour delicious brats, and mingle cheerfully. Let this tradition continue endlessly! On behalf of the Colorado Association of the Deaf Oktoberfest Committee, we want to extend a heart-felt thank you for all your commitment to making this event so successful. It was the vision of the CAD Board and the CAD Oktoberfest Committee to inform, entertain, and provide a fabulous gathering of our members, volunteers, and attendants in a satisfying, comfortable environment. Your generous involvement helped make our vision a reality by supporting our beloved deaf children in beautiful Colorado. During the strenuous setup of the event, we see smiling faces everywhere as the volunteers and the committee members had anticipated what will happen in this event. When numerous attendees anxiously waited to get in before 4 pm, we immediately knew this would be one of the biggest event ever. And we were correct as we broke our last year s record for the most attendants by 50. Yes, we succeed in attaining approximately 350 attendees! We nearly ran out of brats and beers, therefore this was our goal after all. As we worked with the volunteers and committee members, we recognize so much motivation from each and every one of them knowing that they do care about our deaf children. It was inspiring to see what we all can do for the deaf community as a whole. Here is an ingenious quote for you: A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it s better to be thoroughly sure. We will prevail next year by making CAD Oktoberfest even bigger than ever. See you at our 7 th Annual CAD Oktoberfest! Cheers and Prost! 4
