2 The Connection October 2011 Page 2 What s New: Project HOPE Helps Jobless Enter Healthcare Field Project HOPE (Health Profession Opportunity Grants) is a five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Administration for Children & Families, that helps out-of-work Ohioans get the skills they need to get a good paying healthcare job. The grant was awarded to Eastern Gateway Community College that partnered with Trumbull Career & Technical Center (TCTC) to provide services to eligible low-income residents in Trumbull County. Project HOPE has funded more than 50 students in TCTC s State Tested Nurse Assistant (STNA) program. The program pays tuition costs in full. TCTC s LPN and Medical Assistant programs are using the Project HOPE Rewards Program that allows students to earn monthly gas cards, school supplies, household cleaning items and program items such as scrubs, watches and calculators. Emergency funding also is available from Project HOPE for a student who has exhausted his or her resources from the community. These services include anything that would prevent the student from attending school such as car repairs and/or child care. Latoria Eason, student coach for Project HOPE meets monthly one-on-one with students in the program. She can be reached at TCTC, 528 Educational Highway, Warren, OH or by phone: , ext YNDC Offers Green Jobs Training Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. 4 The Connection October 2011 Page 4 Grant Awarded To EGCC New Veterans Rep In Training at CCOS Tammie Hreha is currently in training to be the interim veteran s representative at Columbiana County One-Stop when Dave Oesch goes on active duty in late November. Tammie was a dislocated worker prior to starting at the One-Stop in October. The East Palestine resident spent two years in the Navy. Her assignment in Columbiana County is expected to last approximately seven months. Eastern Gateway Community College received a five-year $1.07 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education s Educational Opportunity Center Program to provide personal counseling as well as financial aid and academic guidance to low- income, first generation, veteran, and serviceconnected individuals enrolled in an education institution. Program staff and mentors will provide emotional support and role modeling, career exploration and guidance, workshops geared to age and educational levels to gain self-esteem and understanding of high school or college life, financial literacy, referral to other services, and exposure to the world of four-year colleges and universities. Updates: The Educational Opportunity Center will be open to all Mahoning Valley residents, not just Eastern Gateway students. Eastern Gateway s Enrollment Skyrockets 15 Percent Eastern Gateway Community College s fall enrollment increased 15 percent, setting a record of 2,466 students. The new student count jumped 27 percent. Half of the 911 new students reside in Jefferson County, 22 percent in Mahoning County and 4 percent each in Columbiana and Trumbull Counties. Of the total 2,466 students, 57 percent reside in Jefferson County, 18 percent in Mahoning County, 6 percent in Trumbull County and 5 percent in Columbiana County. A third of the students are enrolled in at least one online class. Within the next five years, we have the potential of being one of the five largest community colleges in the state, said Dr. Laura Meeks, president. Currently, Eastern Gateway is among the smallest community colleges in Ohio, but with our strong base in Jefferson County and our expansion into the Mahoning Valley, our growth will continue in the future. We are excited about the opportunities we have for reaching more students and helping them to prepare for brighter futures. The college s trustees recently entered into a partnership with Higher Education Partners LLC of New Bedford, MA, to secure a facility for the college in the Mahoning Valley. Currently, the college operates the Valley Center at the Northside Medical Center on Gypsy Lane, Youngstown. Class demand is overflowing at the Valley Center so the center will move in January to the Choffin Career & Technical Center, Youngstown. Eastern Gateway s partnerships with the Choffin Center, Columbiana County Career & Technical Center, Mahoning County Career & Technical Center and Trumbull Career & Technical Center will remain active. No selection has been made for a location of a college facility in the Mahoning Valley. The college has been reviewing sites for more than a year in a quest to find a facility to meet the college s growing needs and a location that will be attractive to students, said Meeks.

Harding High School on Sept. 29 and the Life Skills Community Fair on Oct. 5. The college fair offered juniors and seniors an opportunity to speak with recruiters from colleges/universities, technical/trade schools as well as the armed forces.
