1 The Sept. / Oct Connection The Columbiana County Department of Job and Family (CCDJFS) once again sponsored the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) that started May 20 and will end Oct. 18. This program continues to be well-received by young people and worksites in the county. CCDJFS gives participating youths a real world experience to help them attain employment once the program ends. Youths are interviewed by prospective worksites and are expected to follow the same workplace rules as the actual employees. This year, 230 county youths ages 16 to 24 and 50 worksites participated. Last year, 128 youths completed the program with 45 worksites participating. The program is funded by Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) dollars. County program administrators expect to spend $842,786 in TANF funds to operate the program. The county s initial SYEP allocation was $442,786. An additional $400,000 was obtained from Knox County that chose not to operate a Summer Youth Employment Program this year and from the. Participants worked in a variety of positions including cashiers, custodial assistants, computer technology assistants, restaurant workers, child care classroom aides, hotel workers, library aides, office workers, legal assistants, cooks, summer food program workers, pool and street laborers, ice cream truck workers, and farm laborers. As a result of their SYEP work experience several youths have been offered part-time positions and several have found full-time employment. 2 The Connection Sept. / Oct Page 2 Updates: BRN Progresses Toward Goal, Spreads Information, Influence The Business Resource Network, a recipient of a Department of Labor Workforce Innovation Grant, has completed 22 Interviews and presented 15 proposals since the beginning of the program year on July 1. In August, BRN Manager Gene Babik and Account Executive Richard Thayer presented a cross-training workshop at the Columbiana One-Stop to inform the staff and One Stop partners about the BRN and what it does. Also in August, the monthly roundtable meeting featured a presentation by Randy Monhemius, Business Program Specialist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It covered a number of loan and grant programs available to businesses in the area. The BRN staff also met with Michael Chastain, Veterans Account Executive for Region 3, to discuss ways the BRN and Veterans can cooperate to augment each other s programs. Chastain will join the Area 17/18 BRN as a partner and other BRN areas as the program is rolled out in his territory. In early September, U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson (R-Ohio 6) toured KTSDI s facilities during a visit facilitated by the BRN staff. KTSKI is an engineering services company that won a major contract with NASA to develop a specialized vehicle for the NASA balloon launch program. KTSDI is a longtime BRN client. TCOS Joins with KSU To Help Students Get Jobs Kent State University-Trumbull Campus, in collaboration with the Trumbull County One-Stop, held its 2013 Fall Job Fair and Backpack-to-Briefcase Program on Oct. 8. The job fair featured various employers recruiting for many positions. Also, a Backpack-to-Briefcase program for KSU students was held. The program featured local employers who reviewed student resumes and provide constructive feedback. In addition, the employers participated in mock interviews with the students and provided feedback on interviewing skills. Ceremony Marks Graduation Of 20 From CCCTC LPN Course Columbiana County Career & Technical Center Adult Education graduated on Sept. 27 its 9th Practical Nursing class that consisted of 20 students who are now eligible to sit for their NCLEX exam. Of the graduating class nine students received tuition assistance from Mahoning & Columbiana Training Association. Kevin Clark, Student Coordinator, presided over the graduation ceremony that recognized students in the areas of clinical excellence, highest GPA, and spirit of nursing. The speaker was Amy Frantz, 2009 graduate of the CCCTC Practical Nursing program. Students participated in a pinning ceremony where they picked a special person in their lives to pin them with their nursing pin.

3 The Connection Sept. / Oct Page 3 Success Stories: One-Stop, YWCA Warren Helps Women Step Up to Success When Courtney Mathews, 20, came to the YWCA Warren s Step Up program, she was looking for support and resources as she attempted to further her education, find steady employment and take care of her four year-old daughter, Cherish. Courtney had dropped out of high school when she became pregnant and spent the first years of her daughter s life doing what she could to take care of her. With no high school diploma, Courtney knew her options for a good paying and stable job were limited. Funded by a grant from the Workforce Investment Act, the YWCA Warren s Step Up program helps young women like Courtney, 16 to 21 years of age, overcome obstacles to economic independence through a year-long intensive course. The Step Up program provides opportunities and support for young women to earn their high school diploma or equivalent and focuses on job readiness skills including soft skills. It places participants in internships and assists in removing barriers to gainful employment, ranging from obtaining a driver s license and purchasing car insurance to finding childcare and housing. Less than a year into her time with Step Up, and with the collaboration of Trumbull One-Stop and WIA funding, Courtney achieved a STNA license. She spent her summer employed at the YWCA Warren where she split her time between front desk reception and the childcare department, assisting with both Camp Discover Summer Camp and Before and After School Enrichment. Subsequently, Courtney was hired as a full-time caregiver at an area nursing home. Her goal is to continue her education, achieve her LPN and become a nurse. Step Up for 2014 begins October 21. CCCTC Grads Have 100% Pass Rate Columbiana County CTC Adult Education Department congratulates the graduates of the Patient Care Technician Program and Medical Office Technology Program for their 100 percent pass rate on their national certification exams. The Patient Care Technician program is a nine-month program in which students graduate with their STNA license and national certifications in both Phlebotomy and Patient Care Technician. The Medical Office Technology program is also a nine-month program in which students graduate with training in Electronic Medical Records and ICD-10. All students sit for a national certification.

4 The Connection Sept. Oct Page 4 More Success Stories: To Mahoning County One-Stop-- Thank you so much for your assistance with my typing test on July 8. I never imagined that I would need the One-Stop services while on vacation in Ohio! I applied for a job here in South Carolina the day before I arrived in Ohio, and only a few days into my vacation learned that the employer needed a typing test on file in order to consider my application. I am so grateful for the assistance of your One-Stop. Everyone was so friendly and helpful in providing exactly what I needed. I am happy to report that I had a job interview the day after I returned to South Carolina and was offered the position a few days later! I am now an employee of our local school district thanks to the assistance of the Ohio One-Stop. Program Aids 303 Youth The Trumbull County Summer Youth Program that concluded on Aug. 3 was a success having employed 303 individuals age 15 to 24 years of age at 62 sites throughout Trumbull County. The sites consisted of for-profit and non-profit employers and organizations. The highlight of the summer program was the hiring of four individuals in full-time employment by two employers. Sandy Flowers Darlington, SC EGCC Sets Enrollment Record hit another enrollment record in 2013 with a preliminary headcount of 2,816, an all-time high for the college. A year earlier, enrollment was 2,532. Of the 2,816 students, 1,414 are registered in 12 or more credits to make them full-time students. New students increased to 1,195 from 928. More than a third of the students take at least one online class. The largest increase was at the Valley Center. Online enrollment climbed from 649 in 2012 to 986 this year. Jefferson County Campus had an enrollment increase of 2 percent to 1,261 students, while at the Warren Center enrollment grew from 12 students in 2012 to 61 students this fall.
