4 Youth & education We Are Youth and Education Advocates Scholarships Education is the bedrock of empowerment. The Urban League of Philadelphia awards college scholarships to deserving students at our annual Empowerment Gala. We award in excess of $100,000 annually to help students. Our scholarships are donated by our board members, Affinity Group members, and business professionals. Our scholarship applications are posted on our website, and can be downloaded and returned to us with the requisite documents. Equity and Education Project (EEP) The goal of EEP is to improve outcomes for under-served students in public schools. The program targets five focus areas: Common Core State Standards Equitable and improved access to high-quality curricula and effective teachers Comprehensive, aligned and transparent education Equity and excellence at scale Out-of-school time learning (emphasis on expanded day and effective summer learning) GEAR Up GEAR UP is funded by the United States Department of Education to help low-income students succeed in school and post-secondary education. The Urban League of Philadelphia implements the GEAR UP program for the School District of Philadelphia. GEAR UP brings mentors to inspire and guide the students. It offers innovative programming to engage them and motivate them to graduate from high school and enroll in college or another form of post-secondary education. The Behind the Business curriculum introduces students to the business world. For more information, call ext. 228 CCIS Child Care Information Services is a program of the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare and Office of Child Development & Early Learning that helps working, low-income families find, select and pay for childcare. The Urban League of Philadelphia manages the Northwest Philadelphia site of CCIS. CCIS determines family eligibility for subsidized child care funding. The CCIS Parent Resource and Referral (R&R) services maintain information on local child care centers and community resources to help you find the best place for your child. Convenient Classes Access to Capital Powerful Networking Remarkable Results Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses gives entrepreneurs valuable skills for growing their business, the opportunity to access financial capital, powerful networking and more. Community College of Philadelphia delivers the program s highly practical business and management education curriculum, which focuses on skills that can be immediately applied at no cost to participants. Topics include accounting, negotiation, marketing/sales, operations, human resources, and more. Entrepreneurs use their own business as a case study in the program and develop a customized plan for growth with the advice and support of their peers. Participants receive one-on-one business coaching as well as expert advice and technical assistance through partnerships with business organizations, professional services firms and the people of Goldman Sachs. All accepted applicants receive a full scholarship to the program. Graduates join a growing network of more than 1,000 participants across the country.
