What s Inside? Case Study Essential Skills Classes offer New Lease of Life Lorraine has not always been such a confident person. Lorraine used to find it difficult to talk about her problems with literacy and numeracy but following Basic Skills classes at Deeside College Lorraine steadily developed her confidence after settling into the group. Lorraine had difficulty with spelling and often mis-read words and so was referred to the Study Skills Department who diagnosed her as having dyslexic tendencies and Irlen Syndrome. Lorraine has gone on to achieve qualifications in Maths and English. She also won the Deeside College Essential Skills Student of the Year Award 2012 and overall Adult Learner of the Year following a glowing tribute by her tutors who were impressed by her progress and determination. Lorraine now writes speeches and gives presentations to audiences of up to 200 people for the Kindness In Mind KIM) project that she is heavily involved with.
