3 Welding & Fabrication Why study Fabrication, Welding & Production Engineering? The School is one of the best established and dynamic training centres of its type in the UK. You study on a modular framework - allowing you to pick whatever combination of units best suits your needs or those of your employer. Each module or unit lasts about twelve weeks and you attend for one day or two evenings a week. You can take just one module, or more. Our courses range from beginners to higher level study, so there will be something to suit you. You can enrol at any time during the year. Just drop in to make an appointment. 4 Introductory Welding City & Guilds 3267 Modules available: Oxy- Acetylene Welding, Manual Metal Arc (MMA), Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG), Metal Inert Gas (MIG) Code: TLCMD1AW, TLCME1AW This course is for you if you want to do a practical course in welding. You do not need to have any prior knowledge for Level 1. It is advisable to take the oxy-acetylene welding unit before tungsten arc gas shielded welding. You will receive a City & Guilds 3267 Introductory Welding Certificate in Metal Arc Gas Shielded Welding. You can continue to study for a Level 2 welding course. Level 1, 2 and 3 units are available. You will study your choice of welding processes. Subjects you will study include welding safety, set-up of equipment, joint techniques, inspection procedures. You attend this course to gain skills for either industrial or non industrial fields, such as manufacturing, maintenance engineering, construction, heating and ventilation, pipe fitting, vehicle restoration, classic car, welding for artists, metal sculpture, art and design, arts and crafts. You will attend practical welding classes and theory sessions. You will be assesses by practical tests and an oral examination. One day or two evenings a week for 12 weeks. (Available each term). Certificate in Arc Welding Code: TLAWD1AW This course is for you if you want to enter the welding trade. You do not need to have prior knowledge. You will receive a VRQ 1 Certificate in Arc Welding and a Welding Process Code. You can go on to study for further welding codes and advanced qualifications. The subjects you will study include practical welding and theory classes. You will attend practical welding classes and theory classes. You will be assessed via practical welding assessments and online exams. One day a week for one year. Performing Engineering Operations Level 2 Code: TLRED1AW This course is for you if you wish to further your engineering skills and knowledge. You do not need to have prior knowledge, although it may be advisable to have either the EAL NVQ I or previous industrial experience. You will receive EAL s Performing Engineering Operations NVQ 2. You can go on to study advanced courses such as VRQ Level 3 or NVQ Level 3. 4 Welding & Fabrication
5 Subjects you will study can include: working safely in an engineering environment, developing yourself and working with other people on engineering activities, using and communicating technical information, identifying and selecting engineering materials, marking out for engineering activities, applying quality control in engineering, fitting using hand skills, machining engineering materials, maintaining fluid power systems, maintaining mechanical devices and systems, assembling and testing fluid power systems, producing sheet metal components and assemblies, joining materials by welding, cutting materials using oxy-fuel gas cutting equipment and using computer numerical controlled machines. You will attend practical and theory classes gaining relevant skills. You will be assessed by completing a portfolio of work which is assessed and verified as the course progresses. What support is available while I am on the course? You will be allocated a personal tutor. The Colleges extensive learning resources are available to all students. One day a week for one year. Engineering & Technology Intermediate Level 2 Fabrication & Welding BIA Code: TLCIP1AW This course is for you if you wish to study or further your engineering skills and knowledge. You do not need to have prior knowledge. You will receive an Intermediate Certificate in Engineering and Technology. You can carry on the study advanced courses such as the VRQ 3. Engineering environmental awareness, engineering techniques, engineering principles, fabrication and welding principles, practical welding and practical fabrication. You will attend practical welding, practical sheet metal and theory classes. You will be assessed by on-line examinations, internal tests and practical project work. Two days a week for one year. Advanced Diploma in Engineering & Technology Advanced Level 3 Fabrication & Welding BIAS Code: TLAF P1AW, TLAFD1AW This course is for you if you are an apprentice or technician or for craftsmen in the industry. You will need VRQ 2/NVQ 2 certificates or evidence of relevant industrial experience. You will receive an Advanced Diploma in Engineering Technology. You can progress to welder codes or a Higher National Certificate. Subjects you will study include: engineering and environmental health and safety, organisational efficency and improvement, engineering principles, fabrication and welding and five optional units such as pattern development, CNC programming for fabrication, MMA welding, MIG/MAGS welding, TIG welding, producing sheetmetal fabrications, producing pipework fabrications and managing fabrication activities. Fabrication & Welding HNC/HND Who is the course for? This course is for those within the industry who wish to further their knowledge, gain promotion, enter higher education or change to a technician or managerial role. Any Engineering BTEC Level 3 or equivalent. What qualification would I receive? HNC or HND Fabrication and Welding - ten units of study are required for HNC whilst sixteen are required for HND. Areas of study include: fundamentals of NDT, fabrication and welding, engineering materials, engineering application of computers, industrial studies and employee resourcing, strength of welding joints, planning and control, welding production, radiographic testing, ultrasonic and electrical flaw detection, mathematics and an integrated project. You will be assessed via examination. Flexible ways to study are available because both programmes are modular. You can join at any time during the year. One day a week for two years, flexible to suit you. Fusion College Company Course Welding Code Tests Coded welding means that welding is carried out to approved British and European standards which are covered by insurance guarantees. Increasingly, these codes are becoming an essential contractual condition of quality assurance. We offer codes related to the British Standards, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and European Codes. You can take the welding code training with the test here or just training here and the test at another centre. These are for companies and freelance welders. If you haven t previously held a particular code, experienced trainers will assess your current skills and if necessary, produce a custom made training programme. This will be designed to develop your skill range to the required standard and take into account all knowledge required for health and safety legislation. BS2640 Oxy-acetylene BS2971 Metallic-arc. A minimum requirement for working within the construction industry covering pipe welding skill range tests: within BS1295 BSEN Oxy-acetylene. This Code is Class 1. Pipe Code is used and required when welding pipe work carrying: steam, high pressure hot water, connecting boilers etc BS4872 Pt 1 Oxy-acetylene/Metallic- Arc. These codes are with, and used for welding and fabrication of anchor points, pipe guides, pipe tracks minimum plate welding requirement. BS4872 Pt 2 Inert Gas Plate & Pipe. Code and skill range required for welding of stainless steel fabrication to and within the catering & brewing industries. BS1724 Braze/Bronze Bonding Plumbing & Mechanical Services. Employers would require BS1724 as a minimum skill range for plumbing/ heating/ventilation contracts. Used as a joining requirement for sheet copper, copper pipe etc. 6 Welding & Fabrication

Code: Oxy-acetylene: Pipe Code/Plate Metallic- arc: Pipe Code/Plate, Inert Gas: Pipe Code, Inert Gas: Pipe Code The skill range covering ASME IX is required within industries such as: oil, petrochemical, chemical and nuclear. JIB Joint Industrial Board for Plumbing/ Mechanical Services in England and Wales. NJIC Engineering Services Training Trust United. Welding to British, European, American or leading Industrial Standards (NJIC, JIB) that are approved and covered by insurance guarantees to ensure that welding is of a recognised and constantly monitored standard.
