27 Skills for Work Programme A Pathway to Learning for Employees Skills for Work is a national initiative of the Department of Education & Skills for part-time/fulltime workers. The aim is to provide adult educational opportunities for employees who may have left school early or who have outdated qualifications. Courses can be delivered on the employer s site. Local venues with wifi provision in Banagher, Birr, Edenderry and Tullamore have been the main locations in County Offaly. Skills for Work groups are small, usually between 6 and 8 people. This enables the tutor to fully support learners throughout the sessions. Courses are themed to the specific educational requirements of workers in various sectors. Topics covered include communications, maths, health and safety, personal/interpersonal skills, basic computers, on line herd registration and Industry Knowledge Preparation. Courses can also be delivered using a mixture of these elements. A range of employees across a number of sectors, including retail/wholesale, care, hospitality, ancillary and manufacturing, have benefitted from SFW up-skilling. In addition, self-employed in trades, services, farming community and taxi sectors have taken courses. It is not always easy for adults to have the confidence to return to education. Skills for Work tutors are trained to provide a safe, nurturing and friendly atmosphere conducive to learning. There are no exams involved but FETAC is catered for if requested by a group. Feedback from participants has been very positive with many people progressing further in education and training and working towards life-long ambitions. Participant Feedback: The worksheets gave me an opportunity to improve my writing skills I can now help my grandchildren with spellings and maths It was a great opportunity to gain self-confidence It s not easy going back to education but I decided to give it a try. What did I have to lose? It s great to meet up with everyone every week. It s like a social occasion I was very nervous about learning the computer. I thought I was the worst pupil ever. The tutor was great. For further information contact: Marian O Reilly, Skills for Work (Midlands) Co-ordinator Portlaoise Further Education Centre, Tower Hill, Portlaoise, Co.
