2 DO YOU WANT A HIGHLY MOTIVATED, WELL-TRAINED WORKFORCE? APPRENTICES COULD BE THE ANSWER We have chosen Birmingham Metropolitan College to be the national provider of apprenticeship training for our gas service engineers and we re impressed with the high standards of teaching and learning as well as the knowledge and experience of staff. Allan Ovington Regional Service Manager Worcester Bosch Group Apprenticeships are work based programmes designed by employers for employers. The Government will fund their training One in five employers are hiring more Apprentices to help them through the tough economic climate Apprentices are paid the national minimum wage on the appropriate apprenticeship scale. However most employers tend to pay more. 80% of those employers who employ Apprentices agree they make their workplace more productive 88% of employers who employ Apprentices believe that Apprenticeships lead to a more motivated and satisfied workforce Source: National Apprenticeship Service

5 HOW EASY IS IT TO FIND AN APPRENTICE? WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT APPRENTICESHIPS? At BMet we provide you with your own Apprenticeship Advisor who will assist you every step of the way. We offer a simple 6 step programme designed to take all the pressure out of recruiting an apprentice: 1. Meet with an Apprenticeships Advisor from the College. 2. Together you will decide on the job description, salary and working hours. 3. The Apprenticeship Advisor will draft a recruitment advert which you will approve. 4. The Apprenticeship Advisor will pre-screen all applicants and provide you with a shortlist. 5. You will select which candidates you want to interview. 6. You complete the interviews and your Apprenticeship Advisor meets with you to complete all necessary paperwork. Quite simply, it s a job with the added bonus of training and qualifications built in. The apprentice becomes your employee for the duration of their study (usually months), so you get an extra pair of hands for around 170 per week and the Government pays for the training. It s a win win situation. WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE? All apprenticeships include five elements: 1. The work part (a minimum of 30 hours per week). 2. The study part (most attend college 1 day per week). 3. Maths, English and IT skills (the emphasis on each will depend on job role). 4. Interpersonal skills like team working, communication and time management. 5. Employment responsibilities and rights.
