The Wise Owls maths group, held in Oldham library was very popular. These fun-filled sessions gave families the chance to learn together every Saturday morning. Among other things, the wise owls went on a shape hunt, made life size models of themselves, played number games, discovered that maths is all around and got technical with online maths programmes. Parents enjoyed seeing new ways children are taught maths at school and improved their own maths skills. We ve all loved this course. I was very nervous about joining the course but both tutors put me at ease. We used to have a little tantrum over Emily s homework but for the last few weeks we ve made it fun and if we ve struggled, we ve used methods we ve been taught such as watching maths online through Youtube. I can t thank you enough for helping us. The new strategies learnt at school today have really helped my own understanding of maths. We have tried to put our knowledge into everyday life. William has been helping to set the table using left and right language and we have been playing maths quizzes while walking to school using real life examples and William has been baking this week and has enjoyed using measurements. We are so pleased with William s development, at parents evening, his teacher said his maths has come on leaps and bounds. Thank you! T: E: [email protected] Case study: Elaine Garlick When Elaine Garlick bought her dream holiday home in Spain, she vowed that she would learn the language rather than expect her new neighbours to speak English to her. Now, she s completed her third year of study and every time she visits her home in Alicante, she feels more and more confident. The last time we visited, I felt I d made a massive breakthrough. I felt very confident speaking in the present tense and felt I could hold simple conversations about everyday things like travelling about, shopping, eating out and making myself understood in a chemist. I no longer panic in the supermarket when they tell me how much I owe them, as I understand what the assistant is saying to me. The learning experience has been fantastic. I love working in the classroom with likeminded people and the way we all encourage and help each other. From the very beginning our teacher has spoken to us in Spanish, but with enough English for us to understand. Each year the balance has been such that she speaks to us more and more in Spanish, which is fab. Yes, some topics and grammatical constructions are difficult, but our teacher has the patience of a saint and always ensures that we understand. Topics are re visited, throughout the course, ensuring that things fall into place. Learning the Spanish language has enriched my visits to Spain and given them another dimension. Roll on year four. If your course fee is 65 or more you can pay in three equal monthly instalments. 47

51 Equality and diversity We are committed to providing equal access to learning and a learning experience that is free from discrimination, harassment and victimisation. We celebrate the benefits that difference brings and the contribution of every individual in our Service. You will get more information on equality and diversity in your course induction and in the Learner Handbook which is given to you at the start of the course. Our equality policies and plans are available at all centres. For more information on equality and diversity policies please contact Chiaka Ebizie, Senior Manager on T: E: [email protected] Confidentiality When you begin a course with Lifelong Learning we ask you for your personal details such as your residency status, benefit status, ethnic heritage and disability status and whether you have any additional learning requirements. We are required to ask some questions by law to make sure that we are giving people of all backgrounds fair access to learning. We want to learn about your full requirements so that we can give the best possible service to all of our learners. We are committed to ensuring that information about learners is kept with due regard to the privacy of all concerned. All information systems used comply with the: Data Protection Act 1998 Equality Act 2010 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act Information is shared with our funding body, the Skills Funding Agency, in accordance with the Data Sharing Protocol. They may wish to contact you to ask you to take part in surveys or research. If you do not wish to be contacted please tick the box in the Declaration section of the enrolment form. We do not share your information with organisations for marketing or sales purposes. We, or the Agency, may contact after you have completed your programme of learning to establish whether you have gained employment or gone onto further training. Information is also passed to the Learner Registration Service for the purpose of allocating you a Unique Learner Number (ULN) and the creation of your Personal Learning Record. The ULN is used to enable collection and sharing of data within the education sector. The Personal Learning Record is a lifelong record of your learning and qualifications, which will be accessible to you, organisations linked to your education and training and any other organisations you choose. You can access your Personal Learning Record online by logging onto the National Careers Service web site at nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk. For further details of how your data is shared and used by the Learning Records Service and how to change who has access to your record, please call the Learning Records Service s Customer helpdesk on We will provide a private area when discussing confidential or sensitive information. Learners records are stored in line with Skills Funding Agency requirements. For more information on confidentiality of learner records please call Caroline Ballard, Senior Manager on T: E: [email protected] If your course fee is 65 or more you can pay in three equal monthly instalments. 51

If you withdraw after this, you will not be entitled to a refund and if you are paying by instalments you will be charged the outstanding balance of the full cost of the course. Hints and tips... to help you now that you have chosen your course Getting organised Make a note of your class day, time and location Keep the receipt you were given when you paid for your course and bring it to your first class. Make a note of the telephone number of the centre your class is based in, just in case you need to let us know if you will not be able to attend. Try to arrive a few minutes early at your first class. Important information is given then, such as whether you need to buy any books or equipment, or what will be provided for you. You will meet fellow learners for the first time and begin to get to know them. Over the first three weeks your tutor will carry out an induction programme to ensure you are fully briefed about your course content, health and safety procedures and to help you to settle in. Take a notepad and pen with you that you always use just for your class. Jot down all of your notes in it throughout your course and then everything will be kept in one place. Don t invest in anything else before your first class, unless you are attending an arts and crafts or cookery class and have been advised to bring your own items (such as your own cloths for cookery). You might need to set additional time aside for working at home. Your tutor will tell you during induction of approximate time requirements, to enable you to organise your additional study time. For example, you may be given homework. You might also want to work on a project in your own time in addition to the time you spend in your class. If you have any questions about your course do not hesitate to contact us. Changes to published courses and services Although we will always do our best to provide our courses and services as published, we may need to alter, postpone or cancel courses or services or any aspects of them without incurring liability if circumstances arise beyond our control.
