Welcome to The Core It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the first edition of The Core. The purpose of The Core is to keep you informed of current and future activities and events that are happening at ANU Sport as well as providing information and tips on health, fitness, sport and recreation. Why The Core? We think it has relevance through the core strength of a body, the central element of communicating with students and members, and believing that fitness, sport and recreation are fundamental to life here on the ANU campus. This edition contains a feature on sports conditioning, profile of a club, profile of a member and a report on the Lunchtime sport program. We hope you enjoy the first edition of The Core and look forward to your feedback and contributions to make sure it is relevant to your involvement. Regards Mick Brady ANU Sport CEO

Australian University Games 195 ANU Students set to compete in Sydney next week More than 6000 university students from around Australia will next week gather in the big smoke, Sydney, for the 2014 Australian University Games. The games are set to be kick off in style, with Australian University Sport and the NSW Government hosting the Opening Ceremony at the Ivy on Sunday evening. The games are recognised as the perfect opportunity to provide university athletes, many of whom of are of representative standard, to compete against each other in a national multi- sport event. Off the sporting field, an action- packed, week- long social program is conducted to complement the sporting activities and enhance the event experience for participants. The sports officially start on Monday morning and run late into Friday afternoon with finals, Green & Gold selections and closing ceremony taking place. ANU is sending one of its largest contingents of athletes with 195 students competing across 14 disciplines. ANU has the highest hopes in the Fencing, Futsal, Rowing, Table Tennis, Taekwondo and Ultimate Disc. Here is the list of all the sports ANU will be contesting throughout the week: Athletics Beach Volleyball Fencing Football (Soccer) Futsal Judo Rowing Sailing Softball Swimming Table Tennis Taekwondo Touch Football Ultimate Disc Waterpolo

Whether it is individually or part of a team, University Games is great vehicle for student athletes to play sport, make new networks and enjoy your university experience. ANU Sport would like to wish all 180 competitors the best of luck next week. Fitness Feature Sports Conditioning Preparation Starting to think about training for your sport of choice and the dreaded commitment to off/pre- season training? No matter whether you are playing sport at a social level or have aspirations to achieve at the highest level, there are some basic principles that you can utilise. The basis of any strength and conditioning program is to optimise development of the physical characteristics required for the sport, such as strength, power, speed, aerobic and anaerobic capacity; however this can be a complicated task to ensure all requirements are developed without resultant decreases in performance (Corcoran & Bird, 2012). Therefore, a delicate balance between the key training variables, such as duration, intensity, type of training and total volume must be considered. A periodised program is essential to optimise performance and allows for the establishment and monitoring of training load and implements adequate recovery to avoid excess fatigue and possible overtraining. It is a common error to neglect or place less significance on recovery in the program, resulting in an insufficient balance in stress/fatigue and recovery. The relationship between the athlete and trainer is important due to the individualised differences in ability to tolerate hard training. As sport participants, you need to listen to your body and have open communication with your trainer to get the best results in your program and the season ahead. If you want to get the jump start on your season, come and see us at the ANU Sport gym and we can assist by designing an individualised program, or getting you involved in some Small Group Training sessions where the group dynamic provides the encouragement and support during the difficult initial phases of getting started in 2014/15. See you at ANU Sport gym

Club Corner ANU Boat Club Off the back of being crowned ANU Sport Club of the Year, the Boat Club (ANUBC) will next month celebrate their 50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee. The ANUBC is rich in history and has been extremely succesful in the local and national sporting scenes. The very first row on Lake Burley Griffin was by a crew of students from the Australian National University and the School of Forestry on April 18, 1964. A few days later the ANU rowers formed the Australian National University Boat Club (ANUBC), the ACT s first rowing club. Since then the club has grown and thrived. It now has 140 active members and is one of ANU s top performing sports clubs at the annual Australian University Games. Along the way it has produced an stounding 25 Australian representatives. While the club caters to anyone in the ANU community who is interested in rowing, it has deliberately maintained a student focus, with 70% of the current membership being students. One of the ANU Boat Club s first crews rowing in April 1964. L- R: Kerry Jelbart (future 1972 Olympian), Brian Donkin, Michael Manning, Dr Pieter Arriens (the club s founding President), Jim Colquhoun.

To mark its half century the ANUBC has organised several commemorative activities. In April, on the anniversary of the first row, it launched 50 ANU rowers from the ANU Boat House on Sullivans Creek for a special Canberra Times photo. The club is also publishing a history book of its first 50 years, and producing a unique club blazer. The main commemorative event is a reunion dinner on 18 October. Every year of the club s existence will be represented amongst the guests, including several of the founding members from 1964. On the same day the current ANU student rowers will race against crews from ADFA and RMC Duntroon for the Disher Cup, a race run in memory of the Australian Imperial Forces crew that won the King s Cup at the 1919 Royal Henley Peace Regatta. President of the ANUBC, Mr Nick Hunter, has said 'It's something we're very proud of, that we've not just survived but thrived over our first half century." Member Profiles Rebecca Beath Rebecca is local student of the ANU, studying a Bachelor of Engineering and Science. Heavily involved in the Touch Football scene, Rebecca was awarded a Full Blue Award by the University at the 2014 Annual Blues Awards Ceremony. Some of her sporting achievements include the following: Competed in the ACT Superleague competition for the Vikings and were premiers of the competition. Competed in the highest Touch Football competition in Sydney, The Vawdon Cup, for the Manly Sea Eagles where they placed second. Represented the Alliance (a combination of all states in Australia excluding NSW and QLD) in the Women's Elite 8 division at the National Touch League held in Coffs Harbour. The women s eight division is the best national competition for touch football in the country. Awarded Green and Gold selection for her exceptional performance at the 2013 Australian University Games. Rebecca has been appointed as ANU s Team Captain to represent at the Australian University Games in Sydney next. Rebecca will be aiming to be selected in back- to- back Green and Gold squads. We congratulate Rebecca on all her achievements and wishing her the best of luck.

Lunchtime Sport Mid- Season Report. Much like the recent weather in Canberra, things are heating up in Lunch Time Sport. The majority of our competitions are turning from lunch time to crunch time with the finals series just around the corner. Ultimate disc has two very interesting battles going on. Burgmann and Hedley Bulls are battling it out for 1st position with one point separating the two and the arm wrestle for a top four position continues with only a win separating 3rd and 6th. The 6- a- side soccer competition sees Arsenil and the Balotelitubbies sitting atop the division 1 table. Whilst across the oval in division 2, it seems that One Foot in the Groin have one foot in the door of Lunchtime success with four wins out of four matches played. Meanwhile, in the comfort of the ANU sports halls, Tekkerslovakia and the Honey Badgers are going off like raw prawns and both sitting atop their respective pools. Over in the hotly contested Touch competitions, Pigs with Rigs and Sexual Chocolate are tied for 1st in Division 1 with a looming clash on the 9th of October set to decide top spot based on current form. Over in Division 2, the Trihardists and Boiz Night are replicating the Division 1 setting in a tie for first. Last but certainly not least, Lunchtime Squash is making a racquet while it increases in popularity and doesn t look like hitting a wall any time soon. Wai Wong and Chao Wang are leading Division 1 with Niclas Spaeker and Tae Park leading Division 2. Regardless of what sport is being played, it still remains, Lunchtime is the best time of day and sport is the best thing in the world.
