As host city for the 9 th World Masters Games, Auckland will welcome 25,000 athletes from more than 100 countries competing across 28 sports for the 10-day competition from April With so much to see and so many experiences on offer, participants are encouraged to come to Auckland for the World Masters Games 2017, and add vacation time to explore New Zealand and meet our welcoming people. 2 Competitions All competitions will take place within 50km of the city centre and in accordance with the International Orienteering Federation (IOF) Competition Rules and recommended winning times. Qualification for the finals will follow IOF guidelines. Programme of Events Friday 21 April 2017 Accreditation opens WMG2017 Opening Ceremony Saturday 22 April 2017 Model Event Sprint Distance Sunday 23 April 2017 Sprint Distance Qualification Monday 24 April 2017 Sprint Distance Final Medal Ceremony Tuesday 25 April 2017 (ANZAC Day) Model Event - Long Distance (half day) Wednesday 26 April 2017 Long Distance Qualification #1 Thursday 27 April 2017 Long Distance Qualification #2 Friday 28 April 2017 (Rest day) Saturday 29 April 2017 Long Distance Final Medal Ceremony Sunday 30 April 2017 WMG2017 Closing Ceremony Sprint Distance: Competition with a qualification and final race. Both the Sprint Distance qualification and final will take place in the heart of Auckland city. The qualification is planned to take place around the Auckland Waterfront, formerly a large industrial area now revitalised with residential and commercial development. The final will be held at The University of Auckland s City Campus. Long Distance: Competition with two qualification races and a final race. The Long Distance competitions will be organised in Woodhill Forest, a large commercial forest and recreation area located in the west of the Auckland region. The forest is planted on coastal sand dunes, with a strip of rough open dunes adjacent to the sea shore. The terrain varies from undulating to moderately steep, with many areas of complex contour detail. Runability and visibility are mostly good, but there are some areas of undergrowth that reduce both. The areas are crossed by a network of widely spaced forest roads and some motorbike tracks. The distance to the city centre is approximately 50km. The Long Distance final will be north of the qualification area. The character of the area is more undulating terrain than the qualification area but otherwise similar. 3 Classes WMOC2017 will include the following age categories; Men and Women: 35+, 40+, 45+, 50+, 55+, 60+, 65+, 70+, 75+, 80+, 85+, 90+, 95+. The age category you will compete in for Orienteering will be determined as at 31 December For example, if you are 39 during Games time but have turned 40 by 31 December 2017, you would compete in the 40+ age category. Punching System SPORTident punching system with SI-Card. When registering you will be asked for your SI- Card number. If you do not have an SI-Card, you may rent one from the Games organiser: check this option when completing your registration. SIAC touch-free will not be used. Maps and Embargoed areas Sprint Distance: ISSOM standard, scale 1:4000, contour interval 2.0m, made in 2015 and to be re-checked during Long Distance: ISOM standard, scale: M/W :10000; M/W :7500; contour interval 2.5m. Embargoed areas and old maps are available on the World Masters Games 2017 website. Entries Registration will be open from early February 2016 on the WMG2017 website. Participants have the option to compete in one or both of the competitions (Sprint or Long Distance). Entries become valid only by payment of registration fee. Event fees (NZD): Registration fees will be made available when registrations open in early As per previous World Masters Games, there will be two components to the registration fee: the World Masters Games entry fee, and an IOF levy for the World Masters Orienteering Championships. Payment: Payment options will be outlined when registrations open in Clothing Full body coverage (with short sleeves) is recommended at the Long Distance competitions. Shoes with rubber studs are allowed in both Sprint and Long Distance competitions. Shoes with metal studs are forbidden in the Sprint competition. Spiked shoes are forbidden in all competitions. 4 recommended that a whistle is carried in forest races. How to reach Auckland Auckland Airport is the second largest airport in Australasia and is serviced by international airlines flying direct to Auckland from 32 destinations around the world. Air New Zealand is the airline of the Games and New Zealand s national carrier, for route details and bookings go to New Zealand is a 3.5 hour flight from Eastern Australia and around a 10 hour flight from most places on the Pacific Rim, such as Singapore, Hong Kong or Tokyo. From the West Coast of the United States, a direct flight to New Zealand is a 12 hour flight. Accommodation Auckland accommodation has something for everyone, from luxurious resorts and 5-star international hotel chains to charming bed and breakfasts, beautiful holiday homes, backpackers and camp sites. The AOT Group has been appointed as the official travel partner to provide accommodation and tourism booking services for WMG2017. For further information, participants can the AOT Group directly on: wmg2017@aot.co.nz Transport/Parking WMG2017 will offer transport options as part of the registration packages, utilising existing public and special transport services. Where possible, venues have been grouped together to make transport between sports facilities and the Games Entertainment Hub straightforward. The Sprint Distance competitions can be reached by foot from downtown Auckland or public transport from further afield. Transport to the Long Distance competitions (and model) will be organised with buses from the Games Entertainment Hub. There will be no parking at the competition venues, due to planned road closures or existing restrictions in place. Further information about organised transport, including potential park and ride options, will be announced in Ceremonies and Social Programme The WMG2017 Opening Ceremony will be on the evening of Friday 21 April 2017 and the Closing Ceremony on Sunday 30 April Medal ceremonies will be held at the conclusion of the competition finals at the Orienteering Venues. A social programme is under development. More information will be available in Accreditation centre Accreditation collection will be available from the Games Entertainment Hub, to be located at a downtown Auckland venue. Climate April in New Zealand, the time of the Games, comes with the last heat of Summer but less humidity. Temperatures are often in the early 20s 4

5 Celsius, perfect for participating in sport, and ideal for enjoying the outdoors in shorts and a t- shirt. Visa and Insurance Visitors from overseas may require a visa to enter New Zealand.
