Failure to follow the rules may lead to disciplinary action. The University's computing facilities are provided on a basis of trust that all users will respect the rights of others and not interfere, or attempt to interfere, with systems to which they have not been granted access. Similarly, you may not use the University s facilities for illegal activities such as sharing copyrighted material. All network activity is channeled through the University s firewall and certain protocols (such as peer-to-peer BitTorrent type applications) are not permitted. Virus Protection It is a requirement of UNE that every computer connected to the UNE network must have current antivirus software installed. UNE holds a site license for Sophosenterprise level antivirus software used by government institutions, large corporate entities and Universities worldwide. As a student you are entitled to a FREE copy of Sophos, so there is no excuse to not be protected. You can either download a copy of the software via the link below, or get a copy on CD from the IT Service Desk. http://www.une.edu.au/antivirus/download.php Minimum Computer Requirements You will need a computer capable of running 1 of the following Operating Systems: Mac OS10.4 (or higher); or Windows XP (Service Pack 3); or Windows Vista (Service Pack 2); or Windows 7 or Windows 8 Only devices that are 802.1x compatible will be able to connect to the UNE Network (ie. not Xboxes etc). If you are unsure about your device, contact the Service Desk. Your computer MUST have the following software: Sophos Anti-Virus (or other regularly updated Anti-Virus software) Word processing: o Microsoft Office (2003 for Windows/2004 for Mac) or higher; or o Open Office 2 or higher. Web browsing: o Internet Explorer 8 or higher; or o Firefox 3 or higher; or o Safari 4 or higher. Adobe Acrobat Reader at or above version 9; Flash player 7/8 or higher; Java 6 or higher; itunes (recommended for podcasts). Your computer MUST NOT have any of the following installed or connected while on campus: Netscan, Sharescan, or any other type of network scanning software; Non-UNE network hardware such as switches or network hubs; A Guide to Networking in the Colleges 2

Next G wireless internet modems while connected to the UNE network (eg Bigpond wireless USB)- your connection to this will prevent your computer connecting to the UNE network at the same time. Registering Your UNE Account Before you can connect to the network, receive UNE email, log into your online units or e-submit your assignments you will need to register for a UNE username and password. To register, go to https://login.une.edu.au/register with your student number, full name and date of birth, and fill in the online form. Changing your Password If you know your current password, you can log into myune and change your password via the Account tab. We recommend that you change your password regularly. If you have forgotten your password you can reset it here: https://login.une.edu.au/password/forgot Arranging Access from Your College Room Your college may require you to pay a deposit or a once-off access fee before you can access the network from your room. This may also apply for external students who are staying in college for an intensive school. Please check with your college office prior to your arrival, as the policies and procedures vary from college to college. Connecting to the Network Preparations for using the UNE Network Before you can successfully connect to the UNE network you will need to make sure you do the following: 1. Make sure your computer meets the minimum computing requirements (see page 2) 2. Install the latest service packs and updates for your Operating System 3. Make sure you have up-to-date anti-virus software installed 4. Make sure you don t have Netscan or other network scanning software installed 5. Make sure you unplug any Next G internet devices 6. Wired Network Configuration & Settings Windows XP 1. Click on Start Run 2. Type services.msc in the box. Click OK. 3. Scroll down until you find Wired AutoConfig and double click on it. 4. General tab Startup Type drop down box Automatic 5. Click on Start and then OK. 6. Close the Services window. 7. Click on Start Control Panel. 8. Double click on Network Connections. 9. Right click on Local Area Connection (If the connection is disabled, click on Enable, then right click again) 10. Click on Properties. 11. Click on the Authentication tab. 12. Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication ticked Choose a network authentication method drop down box Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP) Cache user information for subsequent connections to this network ticked 13. Click on Settings. 14. Validate server certificate un-ticked Trusted Root Certification Authorities nothing ticked Select Authentication Method drop down box - Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) Enable Fast Reconnect un-ticked Enable Quarantine Checks un-ticked Disconnect if server does not present cryptobinding TLV unticked A Guide to Networking in the Colleges 4

15. Click on Configure. 16. Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any) un-ticked 17. Click on OK and close all windows. 18. A popup box will appear in the bottom right hand corner when you connect for the first time. Click on this box. Windows Vista 1. Click on the Windows logo. 2. Type services.msc in the Search programs and files box and press Enter. 3. Scroll down until you find Wired AutoConfig and double click on it. 4. Windows 8 Windows 8 has a new user interface called Metro that is designed for touch-screen computers and handhelds. Because of this, you must move your mouse/trackpad pointer or finger to a corner of the screen for certain things to appear. To begin configuring your Windows 8 computer for the wireless network, move your pointer to the top-or bottom right corner without clicking and the Charms Bar will appear on the right. Click the Search icon in the Charms Bar. Select the SETTINGS section in the Search column 1) type Services in the search box. From the search results on the left, select View Local Services look for Wired Auto Config in the list. Double-click the Service and make sure it is set to Automatic and then START the service. Close the screen to return to the search and then 2) Select the SETTINGS section in the Search and type Network in the search box. Search results become available in the left. Select View Network Connections. Click on Change Adapter Settings Right-click on the ETHERNET network and select PROPERTIES. In the Properties screen, select the AUTHENTICATION tab. 1) Tick the Remember my credentials for the connection each time I ve logged on. Un-tick Fallback to unauthorized network access 2) Click on Settings. - Un-tick Verify the server s identity by validating the certificate - Click on CONFIGURE which is located beside Secure password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) and un-tick When connecting Automatically use my windows logon name and password (and domain if any) in the pop up window. 3) Click on ADDITIONAL SETTINGS. In the Additional Settings screen, make sure that USER AUTHENTICATION is selected in the Specify Authentication Mode panel. Click on REPLACE CREDENTIALS. Enter your UNEusername followed by @une.edu.au in the top box and your UNE password in the bottom box. Click OK. Close all open Network configuration windows. After a few seconds, you network connection will be established and you are now connected to the UNE network. A Guide to Networking in the Colleges 11

Mac Users OSX 10.4 USERS 1. Click on the Apple logo top left corner. 2. Click on Applications Internet Connect 3. In the window that opens select the 802.1x tab (if you don t see this go to File menu and select New 802.1x Connection 5. In the Edit window, Description UNE Network Port Built-in Ethernet User Name your UNE username Password your UNE password Authentication tick PEAP & un-tick all others drag PEAP to the top so that it is first in the list 6. Click OK. 4. Network Port Built-in Ethernet Configuration Edit Configurations If prompted to save, name the configuration UNE Network. (If Built-in Ethernet is shaded out, you are most likely connected to wireless disconnect and try again) 7. You should now be back at the 802.1x screen. Click Connect. You are now connected. NOTE: You will need to go to Applications Internet Connect Connect every time you restart your computer. OSX 10.5 USERS or OSX 10.6 WITH MULTIPLE USERS 1. Click on the Apple logo top left corner. 2. Click on System Preferences. 3. In the window that opens, under Internet & Network click on Network. 4. In the window that opens, click on Built-in Ethernet and click on Advanced. 5. Click on the 802.1x tab. 6. Click on + and click on Add User Profile. A Guide to Networking in the Colleges 12

7. Call the new profile UNE Network and un-tick all other user profiles. 8. User Name your UNE username Password your UNE password Authentication tick PEAP & un-tick all others 9. Click on OK. 10. You should now be back at the network screen. Click on Apply. 11. Next to 802.1x select UNE Network from the drop down box. Click on Connect. NOTE: You need to go to System Preferences Network Built-in Ethernet UNE Network Connect every time you start the computer/login as a different user. A Guide to Networking in the Colleges 13

OSX 10.6 / 10.7 / 10.8 USERS 1. Click on the Apple logo top left corner. 2. Click on System Preferences. 3. In the window that opens, under Internet & Network click on Network. 4. In the window that opens, click on Built-in Ethernet and click on Advanced. 5. Click on the 802.1x tab. 6. Click on + and click on Add System Profile. (If you already have a System Profile option, make sure this is the only option ticked.) 7. User Name your UNE username Password your UNE password Authentication tick PEAP & un-tick all others 8. Click on OK. 9. You should now be back at the network screen. Click on Apply. 10. Next to 802.1x select System Profile from the drop down box. Click on Connect. Wireless Network Configuration & Settings All colleges now have wireless access points located in their dining halls. To access these you will need to be within range for reception (you may not be able to access the wireless network from your room). Wireless is also available in most of the main buildings on campus and accepts connections from laptops, tablets and smartphones as long as the correct settings are applied and you connect with your UNE username. Our wireless network (Eduroam) is part of a larger (inter)national cross-university network. Once you have set up access to Eduroam here, you will be able to connect to the Eduroam networks at other universities without additional settings. Email UNE will use email to communicate with you on a regular basis. Please make sure you check your UNE email account at least once a week to stay in touch. To access your emails go to http://access.myune.edu.au or follow the links from the UNE homepage or MyUNE. You need the following details to authenticate. Username: your full email address (username@myune.edu.au) Password: Your UNE password. You can set up your computer or smartphone to automatically receive UNE emails. You can also forward UNE emails to your preferred personal account. More information on this and other features of Office 365 email can be found at http://www.une.edu.au/office365.
