How to: Accessing the TU/e wireless network using Windows XP This How To will guide you in accessing the TU/e wireless network using your personal laptop computer. This manual describes the procedure for Windows XP. Please visit when you need assistance for other operating systems. On the TU/e campus, three supported wireless networks are available: - tue-wpa2 The network for accessing TU/e resources and connection to the internet. - eduroam A country-wide transit network. Can be used by anyone who has a user code of a joined university. Internet access only. - guest A network for temporary use only. Cannot be used with a TUe login code. You have to apply for a login code at the IT Servicedesk. This document will only describe the configuration of tue-wpa2 and eduroam networks, for the guest network, please see document number Accessing the TU/e guest wireless network using Windows XP. All wireless networks require authentication using a valid user code and password. Before you are using the TU/e wireless network or any of the TU/e computer resources, please be acquainted with the Code of Conduct concerning computer use at the TU/e: Check your Windows version To be able to use the WPA2-encryption, your Windows version must at least have Service Pack 3 installed. Press the key combination and simultaneously. If you do not have a Windows-key, select the Properties menu from the My Computer icon. The computer information screen should now appear: /Faculty of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences 1
Check if the version shows Service Pack 3. If a lower number is visible or nothing at all, then you require to update your Windows first. Visit for instructions on how to perform this update. A. Configuring a wireless connection 1. Double click on the wireless icon in your system tray (next to the clock on the lower right side of the screen). Then click the button View Wireless Networks: 2. You should now see a list of available wireless networks. If this list is empty, there might be a problem with your network card or software. See the troubleshooting section. Do not click any network yet. Instead, click change the order of preferred networks on the left side of the wireless network connection window: 3. Check if your preferred network is available in the Preferred networks list. We advise to use the tue-wpa2 network. If the name is not in the list, click the Add.. button. Otherwise select network name and click the Properties button. /Faculty of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences 2
4. If the Network name (SSID) is empty, enter the correct name. This will be tue-wpa2 in most case (all in lower case letters!): 5. Choose WPA2 from the Network Authentication drop down list. Note that if you don't see WPA2 as an option, either your wireless card does not support WPA2 or you do not have the most up-to-date driver installed. Set Data encryption to AES. Note: the above setting will be Open / WEP for the older tue wireless network and Open / Disabled for the guest network. 6. Select the Authentication tab and choose Protected EAP (PEAP) from the EAP Type drop down box. Uncheck Authenticate as computer. Then click the Properties button. /Faculty of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences 3
7. Check the option Validate server certificate: Locate in the list of Trusted Root Certification Authorities the name GTE CyberTrust Global Root, then check this name. Check if Authentication Method is Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2), then click the Configure... button. 8. If your notebook is a member of the TUE domain (i.e.: a TU/e notebook on which you have to login with Control-Alt-Del), you can enable the option for automatic authentication on the wireless network. For owners of private laptop this option has no effect and must be unselected: 9. The configuration of the wireless network is now completed. The remaining windows can be closed by clicking the OK buttons. /Faculty of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences 4
B. Connecting to a wireless network 1. Open the list of available wireless networks and connect to the network you just had configured (in most cases this will be tue-wpa2): 2. If you use a computer that is not member of the TUE domain, you have to enter your credentials before access is allowed. The login screen is sometimes 'hidden' behind the Wireless Network connection window. A double click on the network icon in the task bar will help showing this window: When you have a TU/e usercode, enter your user name in this special format: [email protected] Note: This is not an address! Entering your address won't work here. Eduroam network only: Users from other universities have to enter their usercode with name, where internet name is the logon domain of the other university. An example for TU Delft users would be: [email protected] Enter your password and leave the Login domain empty. After clicking the OK button you should have access to the wireless network. /Faculty of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences 5
Troubleshooting wireless connections 1 No networks are available in the Wireless Network connection: Check if you are in range of a wireless access point Some notebooks have a physical wireless-enable switch. Locate this switch and check it's turned on. Check your wireless network card and driver in the network control panel. 2 The Wireless Network Connection shows the message: Windows cannot configure this wireless connection... In this case your computer might use other software to manage wireless connections. Use that software to configure the connection (undocumented), or uninstall and restore the Windows Wireless configuration. 3 The network status stays on authenticating If using a TUE laptop, check in step 7 if you have turned off the option Automatically use my Windows logon name and password 4 The wireless keeps asking to enter logon credentials. Check the date and time on your computer. The date and time must match with the real time within 2 hours! /Faculty of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences 6
5 No known error message, just no network connection. Right click the network icon in the task bar and choose status Select the support tab. This shows the TCP/IP status of the network card. The IP-address should start with: when using the tue-wpa2 network when using eduroam If not, open the TCP/IP properties of the wireless network card and check if no fixed IP address was entered. About this How To: The information in this manual is provided As is. The Servicedesk cannot be taken responsible for any damage on your computer resulting from the described procedures.
