Contents Connect to the Sheridan College / Gillette College - STUDENT Secure Wireless Network with the PEAP Client (Windows XP Pro) 1. Introduction 2. Configuring the Sheridan College / Gillette College Secure Wireless Network Settings. 3. Access and Login to the Sheridan College / Gillette College Secure Wireless Network 4. Additional Information 1 Introduction This document describes how to setup and configure the native PEAP Client in Windows XP in order to connect to the Sheridan College / Gillette College Secure Wireless Network. These instructions are specifically for a PC laptop running on Microsoft Windows XP Professional operating system. It is also under the assumption that you have administrative privileges to configure the settings on Windows XP. Please make sure that your wireless network card is compatible with the 802.1x network and can handle Dynamic WEP key. For more information, please contact your wireless network card's manufacturer for details. 2 Configuring the Sheridan College / Gillette College Secure Wireless Network Settings Windows XP will automatically search for any available wireless connections when you power on your wireless network card. If a wireless connection has been found, Windows XP will inform you that a connection has been made. But we still need to set up the PEAP client's configuration. 1. Click on Start, right click My Computer and click on Manage
2. The Computer Management Window will pop up. On the left side, double click on Services and Applications, then click on Services. On the right side, scroll down to the bottom and right click on Wireless Zero Configuration and go to Properties. 3. Make Sure that the Service Status is set to Started. If it is not started, click on the Start button. Click Ok to close this box and also close the Computer Management Window.
4. If the service will not start your Network Card manufacture may be controlling the wireless management. Look for an Icon in the lower Right Hand corner of the screen similar to the following Diagram. Right Click on the Icon and Left Click on Use Windows to Manage Wi-Fi
5. On your desktop, right click on My Network Places and left click on Properties 6. The Network Connections box shows up. Right click your wireless connection icon and click on Properties 7. The Wireless Connection Properties box pops up. Make sure that Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings are being checked. Click
on the Add button under Preferred Networks 8. The Wireless Network Properties box shows up. Make sure the following settings are accurate: Network Name (SSID): Student Check mark Data Encryption (WEP enabled) and This key is provided for me automatically
Click on the Authentication tab right next to the Association tab to continue. 9. Under the Authentication tab, make sure that Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network is checked. The EAP Type is: Protected EAP (PEAP) Under the EAP Type, click on Properties.
10. The Protected EAP Properties box pops up. Make sure the following settings are configured: UN-Check Validate server certificate Make sure that the Selected Authentication method is Secure password (EAP- MSCHAP v2)
Click on the Configure button to continue. 11. The EAP MSCHAP v2 Properties box pops up. Make sure to uncheck Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any). Click OK to close all the boxes.
3 Access and Login to the Sheridan College / Gillette College Secure Wireless Network 1. You may need to disable/re-enable the wireless network card. go to Start --> Right Click on My Network Places --> Left Click on Properties Right Click on Wireless Network Connection and Choose Disable
Right Click again on the Wireless Network Connections and Choose Enable. 2. After a couple of seconds up to a minute, in the system tray (at the right bottom corner of the screen), you will see the following:
3. Click on the Yellow Information box and the credentials login box pops up and enter your Sheridan College Authentication Click OK to connect to the network. 4. To Ensure that it is connected, go to Start --> Control Panel. When Control Panel pops up, click on Network Connections. Look at the icon that indicates the wireless connection. If it indicates Authentication Succeeded under the icon, you are connected properly. If it indicates Validating Credentials, just wait for a while and it should change it status to success if log on properly. 5. NOTE: If after awhile, the network connection kicks back into the public open network (i.e. the unsecure wireless network), then the credentials login has failed and you will need to reboot your machine and try again.
4 Additional Information Please note that the login information connecting to the PEAP client is automatically stored onto the Operating System. This means that if you successfully connect to the network, then every time you reboot your machine, Windows XP will try to connect you to the secure network via PEAP automatically with the accurate information. You do not have to retype your login information in order to gain access. NOTE: Since your login information is being stored on the local drive, other people will be able to log onto the wireless network as you if you loan them your laptop. You will also need to regenerate a new password if the laptop is being stolen or lost to ensure security access on your account to the secure wireless network. If you cannot browse any WebPages after connecting to the secure wireless network but the wireless network icon indicates that it is connected and the signal strength is good, then make sure that your machine is getting a proper IP address. To get your IP address, you can do the following: 1. Double click the wireless network icon in your system tray (i.e. right bottom corner of the screen) 2. Click on the Advance tab. This will show you your IP address. Make sure that the address starts with 10.4.xxx.xxx. If it doesn't start with 10.4.xxx.xxx, then something is wrong with the configuration and you are not connected to the secure wireless network. If you have problems authenticating on the secure Wireless Network, please contact the ITS Help Desk at ext 2600 Disclaimer: The provided instructions are for information purposes only. Neither Sheridan College / Gillette College nor the Division of Information Technology Services assume any responsibility for loss of use or damage to a computer system (including any data or software contained within the computer system) which is the result (directly or indirectly) of the application of these instructions. Any problems, questions or concerns not addressed by these instructions should be directed to the vendor and/or the manufacturer and not to Sheridan College / Gillette College or any of its employees or incumbents.
