Envirnmental Hydraulics Institute IH Cantabria The Envirnmental Hydraulics Institute IH Cantabria, is a jint research centre between the University f Cantabria and the Fundatin fr Envirnmental Hydraulics Institute. IH Cantabria is made up f apprximately ne hundred frty researchers, with ver twenty years f expertise in the fields f hydrdynamics, sediment transprt, castal evlutin, castal structures, castal/prts/river engineering, estuarine dynamics, transprt prcesses, marine and river envirnmental sciences, water quality, numerical and physical mdelling f water-related prcesses and integrated castal and river basin management. IH Cantabria fcuses its activities n three main pillars: research & develpment, cnsultancy and educatin & training activities. The missin f IH Cantabria is t becme an internatinal reference centre specialising in basic and applied research as well as fcusing n the develpment f studies, methdlgies, and tls fr the management f aquatic ecsystems including superficial and subterraneus waters, transitinal and castal water bdies integrating the relevant prcesses as well as the sci-ecnmic aspects assciated with an efficient and sustainable management f the water cycle. IH Cantabria has cnducted a great number f R&D prjects funded by the Eurpean Unin, the Nrth-Atlantic Treaty Organisatin and the British Cuncil, with the invlvement f Eurpean, US, Spanish and Latin-American institutins. Prjects have been carried ut fr the Spanish Ministries f Envirnment, Science and Technlgy, Spanish Agency fr Internatinal Cperatin and Develpment, Castal and Prt Authrities, etc. Cncerning Climate Change, IH Cantabria is a member f the IPCC, being the nly Spanish representative in the Nairbi Prgramme f the UN. It als acts as an advisr t the Spanish Office f Climate Change n plicies and strategies t cunter the effects f glbal climate change n the cast. As far as natural disasters and risk management is cncerned, IH Cantabria is a member f the Eurpean Tsunami Alert develpment Netwrk TRANSFER, and has been awarded several Spanish Natinal Envirnmental Awards fr prjects as the Develpment f the Spanish Atlas fr Castal Flds (1999) and the Develpment f the mdel fr il spill trajectry predictins fr the Spanish system ESSEO (2007). The study f wave hydrdynamics and wave interactin with castal infrastructures is the main scientific mtivatin f the Castal Hydrdynamics and Infrastructures Grup. This grup has mre than twenty years f experience in the develpment f numerical tls and the use f the mst advanced experimental techniques t analyse the wave induced flw in the vicinity f castal structures. The Castal Hydrdynamics and Infrastructures Grup als develp actively cllabratin with public and private sectrs bth natinally and internatinally, prviding integrated slutins t prblems related with design f harbur facilities, functinal design fr cnventinal and nn-cnventinal structures, structural design fr cnventinal and nn-cnventinal structures, peratinal systems, structural and functinal design fr cnventinal and nn-cnventinal castal structures. The grup als has experience n envirnmental flws such as desalinatin plant discharge design and diagnsis r castal and submarine pipelines, pumping and sewage cllectin. CAPACITY BUILDING EXPERIENCE IH Cantabria als wrks n capacity building and training activities and prjects fr scientists, technicians and managers f the Mediterranean, Kuwait and Latin America regins regarding all these fields f expertise. Specific trainings were carried ut in Tunisia and Brazil regarding the Castal Mdelling System and in Albania, Algeria, Bsnia- Herzegvina, Egypt, Kuwait, the Lebann, Mrcc, Mauritania, Serbia- Mntenegr, Palestinian Territries and Tunisia regarding Integrated Castal Zne Management in cperatin with the Spanish Agency f Internatinal Cperatin fr Develpment. Mst f these initiatives are dealing with transferring knwledge and expertise and increasing lcal capacities fr sustainable castal management. IH Cantabria (University f Cantabria) has been wrking fr mre than twenty years in the field f Envirnmental Hydraulics applied t Educatin. The prfessrs at IH Cantabria are cnsidered experts bth natinally and internatinally in the castal and river engineering, integrated castal zne management and field mnitring. IH Cantabria s expertise is als widely recgnized in the fields f wetland restratin, beach nurishment (restratin and regeneratin), utfall design and hydrdynamics mdelling. The Graduate prgrams ffered by IH Cantabria (University f Cantabria) have received ever since 2003 the highest pssible merit in educatin cnferred by the Spanish Ministry f Educatin and Science, knwn as Mención de Calidad. This distinctin has been granted every year since then. The Graduate prgrams include three MSc Curses in Integrated Castal Zne Management, Harbur and Castal Engineering, and Envirnmental Management f Water Systems; and tw PhD prgrams fcused n Marine Science and Technlgy and Science and Technlgy fr Water Systems Management. The Latin American University Graduate Assciatin (AUIP) has als granted this prgram with its highest award, describing it as the best prgram in the field f Applied Sciences in Latin America. Researchers at IH Cantabria participate actively in ther Masters ffered by the Spanish Ministry f Envirnment as well as ther imprtant University based prgrams. All the previusly mentined experience makes IH Cantabria suitable fr develping the training curse, emphasizing the practical pint f view f the teaching cntents, as well as the accredited awards test the highest standards f IH Cantabria Lecturers. INFRASTRUCTURES IH Cantabria facilities are currently in the Scientific and Technlgical Park f Cantabria (PCTCAN). The new facilities cnsist f three ffice and labratries buildings including a space t huse new businesses r t create a strategic relatinship with the Institute.
