2 In the past seven years FP7 allcated 8.1 billin f Unin funding t 2,41 prjects in the field f ICT (ICT Cperatin ICT Theme and e-infrastructures), attracting abut 6,94 rganisatins frm all ver the wrld ICT is the largest research area in the FP7 Cperatin prgramme. Under this theme, the EU has c-funded ver the perid ,261 prjects fr a ttal Unin funding f abut 7.6 billin. 6,551 rganisatins participated t the Prgramme frm 12 cuntries. The EU als c-funded prjects within the Capacities Prgramme fr the develpment f e-infrastructures underpinning a digital Eurpean Research Area. The cumulated ttal funding was millin and the number f prjects 14, invlving 839 rganisatins frm 83 cuntries. On average, 1,83 legal entities take part in FP7 every year. Als, every year new rganisatins participate in the prgramme, with a share f new entries ver the ttal participants stabilizing at 4% per year. 3 Future Netwrks and Future Emerging Technlgies are the research areas that attract the highest number f participants and funding Under the ICT Theme f FP7 Cperatin Prgramme, Specific Targeted Research Prjects (STREPs)* are the prevailing instruments, as they accunt fr abut half f funding and participatins, and 64% f prjects. Large scale Integrated Prjects (IPs) fllw, with 41% f funding, 17% f prjects and 29% f participatins. 4 Higher educatin institutins and eresearch rganisatins are the main beneficiaries f EU funds. The business enterprise sectr represents just slightly ver ne third f participatins and budget HES/REC* rganisatins accunt fr mre than half f all participatins in the prjects (57%) and receive the largest share (64%) f the verall FP7 budget. They als crdinate mst f the prjects (69%). Large cmpanies crdinate 18% f prjects, whereas SMEs crdinate nly 1%. SMEs represent 16% f participatins and receive 15% f the funding. A little less than 2% f participatins and funding are attributed t large cmpanies. As fr ICT Theme under the Cperatin prgramme, three quarters f prjects invlve SMEs and abut 7% large enterprises. 5 SMEs are especially present in the research theme Language Technlgies. Estnia, Slvakia, Bulgaria and Hungary are the cuntries with the highest share f SMEs in ttal participatins and funding. SMEs are 35% f the participating rganisatins. 6 In abslute terms, Germany and the United Kingdm are the biggest recipient f EU funding, but Cyprus and Greece are the cuntries with the highest funding in relatin t the size f their ICT sectr Germany, the United Kingdm, Italy, France and Spain accunt fr 6% f ttal EU funding and 57% f participatins ver the perid Cyprus, Greece, Slvenia, Austria and Belgium are the 5 Member States with the highest amunts f funding cmpared t the size f their ICT sectr. In sme cuntries the R&D activity is heavily cncentrated in the capital Regin (e.g. Finland, Prtugal, Greece, France and Spain), whereas in thers funding is distributed amng several imprtant clusters f research (e.g. Germany, Italy and the UK). 7 91% f EU funding in FP7is allcated t EU Member States, fllwed by Assciated Cuntries. Third Cuntries take part in the Research Prgramme but with little EU funding (1%) 6% f participatins and 7.5% f funding g t assciated cuntries*, mainly due t the presence f research-riented players such as Switzerland, Israel and Nrway. Accessin cuntries and Third Cuntries (TCs)** tgether accunt fr 1% f the budget and 4% f participatins. Over the perid , ver 6 rganisatins participated in 362 prjects within the FP7 ICT Cperatin Theme and in 67 prjects within the Capacities theme (e-infrastructures). Mst f the prjects with internatinal participants fall under the specific bjectives (SOs) "Future Emerging Technlgies" (61 prjects), "Future Netwrks and Internet" (58 prjects), "Internatinal Cperatin" (39 prjects) and "ICT fr Health" (22 prjects). 8 The CIP ICT Plicy Supprt Prgramme has allcated millin f EU fundingver the perid , distributed t 233 different prjects. 2,72 different rganisatins frm 41 cuntries participated in the prgramme. Each prject receives n average arund 2.5 millin f EU funding. Public bdies accunt fr ne third f ttal funding and participatins, whereas SMEs accunt fr 15%. The Eurpeana Fundatin is the rganisatin receiving the largest EU funding. In abslute terms, Italy is the cuntry receiving the largest EU funding, fllwed by Spain, Germany, the United Kingdm and the Netherlands.
