Guide to levels Entry level Learners with no formal qualifications who wish to gain basic knowledge and skills. Qualifications are offered at Entry 1, Entry 2 and Entry 3 (E1, E2, E3) in a range of subject areas, including languages, IT and numeracy. Level 1 Learners with little or no knowledge of the subject who want an introduction to routine skills or basic information. Equivalent to: NVQ 1, ABC level 1, GCSE grades D-G. Level 2 Learners who want to learn, apply and interpret information about the subject or skill. Equivalent to: GCSE grades A*-C, NVQ 2. Level 3 Learners who want to explore a subject in detail, with some independent research and reflection of the subject. Equivalent to: NVQ 3, Access to Higher Education GCSE AS / A2 level. Level 4 Learners who want in-depth knowledge of current issues and how they apply to the wider environment. Equivalent to: Professional Certs and Awards, Cert of Higher Education, Degree and Foundation Degree. 10%off most fee paying courses if you enrol before 27 September 2013 16yrs The minimum age for all courses is 16. You must be 16 on or before 31 August 2013. How can I enrol? You should enrol for your course at least one week before the start date. Some courses are eligible for reduced fees or may be free depending on the course you are enrolling on. Please see pages 4 and 5 to check if you may be eligible for a reduced fee. 3

Full cost The fees for any courses which do not qualify for a government subsidy reflect the full cost of the course, with no concessions. If you are aged 16 to 18 you will need to pay the full cost of the course. Can I spread the cost of my payments? Yes! Our easy payment plan means you can pay in instalments by standing order for many of our courses. You will need to make an initial payment when you enrol to secure your place. Worried about fees and charges? We know that for some people being able to take part in adult education is only possible if they receive assistance towards the costs of tuition, exam fees, travel, books, materials and childcare. The Skills Funding Agency has allocated some funding to provide financial assistance to these learners. Please ring 0300 1231 117 for information and advice on how to apply for this support. What about examination fees? All examination and registration fees are included in the course fees quoted unless otherwise stated. Course materials On some courses the initial cost of materials is built into the fee to get you started, but you will need to provide all other materials such as books, stationery and any additional materials. Details of the materials you will need and a breakdown of what is already included in the course fee can be found in the course information sheet. Refunds A full refund of course fees will only be made if a class does not start or closes due to insufficient enrolments. Refunds for other reasons are not generally given, but if a refund is granted there will be an administration charge of 5. 16-18 learning All courses are free Skills for Business Know any 16-18 year olds who need qualifications to get a job or start at college? We offer courses to help young people improve their skills and gain qualifications. All our Link into Learning centres offer young people the chance to work towards gaining qualifications in English, maths and IT. Learn at a venue near you They don t have to go back to school or college to get those vital English and maths qualifications they can learn with their mates in a place which is near where they live and easy to get to. There are sessions running at various times during the week to fit it around their job or social life. They can learn only what they need to get on in life at a pace that suits them. Get a group together and we can deliver the courses in a venue near you. As any business knows, developing staff is key to helping the business succeed. We work with employers across Cornwall to provide vocational learning opportunities in the work place. We specialise in accredited courses in advice and guidance, business and administration, customer services, health and social care and management. There are no formal entry requirements for our courses, but learners do need to be either employed or voluntary members of staff in a specific working environment as skills are assessed in the workplace. Vocational Qualifications These usually take between 6-18 months to complete and include: NVQ Certificate and Diploma in Business and Administration NVQ Certificate and Diploma in Customer Service Diploma in Health and Social Care (Adults) NVQ Certificate in Team Leading and Management NVQ Certificate in Advice and Guidance There are a range of business related courses on offer right across the county, so have a look at the main course listings for details. Family Learning Does it feel like things have changed since you were at school? Do you find it hard to help your children with their homework because of the way they are being taught? Our free family learning courses can help you support your child with their learning and development. Our expert tutors deliver family learning courses across Cornwall. You can choose from a wide range of courses including understanding how literacy and numeracy is taught in school, supporting your child with their reading and counting skills, basic computing and digital photography, cookery and art. Family learning can help you: Feel confident about helping your child to learn Find out more about how children learn in school Spend time enjoying learning with your child Improve your own skills in line with how children are taught today as well as work towards a qualification Learn in a relaxed and friendly group Meet other parents just like you Family learning can help you gain new skills and confidence. Do you have knowledge and passion for a subject that you d love to share with others, but you don t have the necessary teaching qualification? Talk to us now about how to get started with initial teacher training. For 2013/14 we are offering the following courses to help you on your way to becoming a professional teacher or trainer. Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) An entry point and introduction for those wishing to teach or train others. This qualification will equip you with essential tools to plan, deliver and assess effectively while also providing an essential insight into teaching and learning theories. Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) This is a progression from the PTLLS course and is aimed at those who already teach on a 1:1 and/or group basis, and are currently working as teachers or trainers in further, adult or continuing education. A PTLLS (or equivalent) and access to 30 hours of teaching practice is a course prerequisite. The course will develop essential skills for planning, delivery and effective assessment whilst also providing a deeper insight to teaching and learning theories. Training, Assessment Quality and Assurance Awards (TAQA) Designed to train assessors and those carrying out quality assurance to attain current assessment and quality assurance standards together with the competence as necessary to deliver these functions.
