Saturday Art School is a vibrant and exciting collection of arts-based courses aimed at students in school years 5 to13. From Juniors through to Portfolio Preparation, students have a great introduction and opportunity to specialise in art, design or media. There are a limited number of places on each course and the enrolment procedure operates on a first-come, first-served basis. 4 What courses does Saturday art school offer? 5 What is the Arts University College at Bournemouth? We are a university college specialising in art, design, media and performance and we offer some of the best creative teaching and facilities in the country. Our campus where Saturday Art School takes place consists of a series of modern, purpose-built studios, workrooms and teaching areas, with the latest industry standard equipment and specialised computer resources. It is designed to be inclusive and accessible to all. All Saturday Art School students will have the opportunity to visit our excellent library and make use of the resources to learn research techniques that help them to develop their individual style. The innovative exhibitions at our gallery and our impressive collection of contemporary art provide an inspiring setting for young artists. Each course runs between 9.30am and 12.30pm for eight weeks during the school term. A two-week break coincides with most schools half term holidays. 6 juniors Juniors is designed with younger students in mind and offers an exciting opportunity for children to explore their creativity through traditional and experimental art techniques. Everyone is encouraged to stretch their imagination and use a wide range of media to develop their own unique style. Working together in the studio allows students to share ideas and talk about each other s work in an encouraging and supportive atmosphere. You don t need to be an expert in painting or drawing to enjoy this class - the only requirement is an enthusiasm for art. 7 animation If you have ever wanted to see your characters come to life or wondered how cartoons were made then this could be the course for you. The Animation course gives you an insight into the world of animation, focusing on hand drawn animation with the chance to do cut out animation and stop motion. You will also look at storyboarding and character design and there will be opportunities to learn about movement and timing. 8 design On this fun and experimental course you will be challenged to develop your creative thinking and explore some of the concepts present within three dimensional design. Through a series of exciting, hands on, miniprojects you will be encouraged to consider a wide range of design elements, including structure, form, space and scale. You will also be asked to think about how design, in all its forms, fits into the world around us. This course is aimed at all levels of experience and you will experiment and explore with a wide range of materials. This will help you to build confidence in your making skills and communicate your ideas in an effective way. 9 digital film making This course introduces you to practical and critical aspects of the process of film making. Using digital video, you will have the opportunity to make a group film. This will include developing ideas for the project, from scriptwriting and planning, to the practical shooting of the film. You will work as part of a film crew and have the opportunity to specialise in roles such as actor, director, producer or camera operator. 10 fashion On this course you will be introduced to the world of fashion. Focusing on the skills needed to research, develop and present your ideas it will give you an insight into the industry and provide valuable experience for those interested in progressing into full-time education in fashion. Each course will be set around a theme where you will develop your illustration techniques using a range of media to present your ideas effectively. 11 fine art This is an opportunity to get your creative process flowing. The course consists of drawing, painting, collage, sculpture and a wide range of other inspiring artistic techniques. You will also learn how to spark your own creativity, through researching other artists work. Key skills for pursuing further education in a creative field, such as portfolio presentation, will also be taught. Students own self-motivated projects and work will be encouraged. 12 graphics Graphic design is all around us - in magazines, packaging, the web, signs or advertising; everywhere you look information is presented and communicated through visual design. This course will give you an insight into the exciting world of communication design. You will be introduced to the fundamentals of layout and composition, deal with colour and look at key aspects of typeface selection and typography. You will also look at information hierarchy within design, tone of voice and the importance of target audience within design concepts. Through practical workshops and project briefs you will have the opportunity to use industry standard software to put your ideas into practice. 9.30am 12.30pm School years 8-11 Course Code: LCSGD Spring term th January 23rd March 16th 23rd February No summer term 18 19
13 photography This course will give you an opportunity to acquire knowledge and gain insight into practical photography. You will learn about camera controls and develop an awareness of visual elements and composition. Throughout the course other artists work and ideas will be introduced to broaden your contextual and visual knowledge. Following an introduction to Mac computers and basic Adobe Photoshop tools, you will have the opportunity to explore image manipulation and creation. The final outcome will be a presentation and discussion of your images. 14 portfolio preparation If you are in the final years of school or college and applying for a full-time creative course, we can offer you the chance to experience what it is like to study at an award-winning art, design, media and performance provider. A well presented and varied portfolio is essential for any prospective art student and Portfolio Preparation is designed to give you guidance and support from experienced staff on the development of your work, presentation methods and communication skills. 15 What should I bring? Fees and enrolling Most of the materials you use will be supplied by the University College. However, you may find it useful to bring the following: An overall/old shirt to protect your clothing Sketchbook Drawing pencils Any colouring pencils or pens you would like to use An economy art portfolio folder You may wish to bring some money to purchase a drink and snack during the supervised break Note: Photography students, the University College will provide cameras but if students want to use their own cameras, that is also possible. Fees Saturday Art School classes cost for an eight-week term. If parents or guardians currently receive incomerelated benefits (and have an official document showing this), then they may qualify for a reduced fee of per term. You will need to contact us prior to enrolling online. Contact Saturday Art School on or saturdayartschool@aucb.ac.uk to find out if this applies to you. Enrolment Parents and guardians can enrol their child online at aucb.ac.uk/saturdayartschool Enrolment forms must be completed by a parent or guardian if the student is under 18 years of age. Once you have enrolled online and made your payment you will automatically receive a receipt and be directed to your confirmation pack online. Please note we no longer accept payment by cash or cheque. All payments must be made either by debit or credit card. You are advised to book and pay for your course as early as possible since places are limited and no places can be reserved
16 Terms and conditions Class numbers Tuition is on a group basis, although it does take account of individual s interests and needs. All courses are subject to a minimum number of students enrolling. If we cancel a course, all participants will be notified and offered an alternative course or fees refunded in full. Student age Saturday Art School classes are designed for children in school years 5 to 13. Please check the year group of a course before enrolling your child. We do not accept children on any course if they are not in the specified school year group. Changing dates or postponing a course In rare circumstances, we may need to rearrange dates of a class. In such cases, we will try to give you as much notice as possible. Information will also be published on the University College website: aucb.ac.uk and broadcast on local radio stations. Parents who provide addresses or mobile numbers will be ed and texted wherever possible. In cases such as these, refunds will not be offered, as students will be invited to attend a replacement class at an alternative time. Cancellations made by you Enrolment fees will only be refunded if a student withdraws from a course at least 21 days prior to the course commencing. Please note that while every care has been taken to ensure the accuracy of this brochure, the Arts University College at Bournemouth reserves the right to make changes if necessary. Safeguarding your child Parents/guardians of students in school years 5, 6 and 7 must sign their child into and out of each Saturday Art School class. They must also inform the tutor of any other person authorised to collect their child who will be required to sign when the child is collected. We also encourage all new parents/guardians to attend the introductory talk on the first day of term, which lasts no more than ten minutes. This session will provide an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have. Students in school year 8 and above are able to sign themselves in and out with their parent s/guardian s permission. If you do not wish your child to sign themselves in and out of Saturday Art School please notify us in writing. All students will need to be dropped off and collected from a central point each week. Details will be given with confirmation of enrolment. Code of conduct Students will be expected to behave in a responsible manner respecting tutors, other students, University College property and equipment. Students who do not behave responsibly will not be allowed to continue with the class. Non-attendance Non-attendance at classes due to illness or for personal reasons does not provide the right to a refund, extra tuition, or a transfer. We reserve the right to contact parents/guardians of students under 18 years of age who have missed two or more consecutive weeks of Saturday Art School without prior notification. Additional needs We welcome participation from young people with disabilities and will do our best to support them. Please contact us for further advice before enrolling
17 ABOUT US How to find us The Arts University College at Bournemouth (AUCB), established in 1885, is a specialist University College dedicated solely to the study of art, design, media and performance. There are approximately 3,000 students at the AUCB all studying on one attractive campus, which is situated between Bournemouth and Poole. The AUCB is a member of the United Kingdom Arts and Design Institutions Association (ukadia). Ukadia is a group which promotes the key contributions of specialist arts institutions to the UK s world-renowned reputation in visual arts, performance and the creative and cultural industries. We offer a number of creative courses including Foundation and Extended/Diplomas; a choice of nineteen undergraduate degrees in art, design, media and performance and a unique postgraduate and research programme. Our alumni include Turner Prize winner, Wolfgang Tillmans; Oscar winning screenwriter Simon Beaufoy and fashion photographer Nick Knight. Graduates have been known to win BAFTAs, Oscars, Emmys and RTS Awards. Parents and guardians dropping off and collecting students by car may use our car park for this purpose. Please park in signed areas and be sensitive to the safety of children crossing the car park.
