2014 Editorial Schedule JANUARY/FEBRUARY BRAKE REPAIR Brake system service done the correct way. We cover driveability issues such as low pedal, soft pedal and chattering. Analysis of friction material, rotors, calipers, master cylinders and ABS tips will be covered. DRIVEABILITY: CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DIAGNOSIS Our diagnostics expert addresses a specific DTC. We ll walk through diagnosis and service on a methodical and step-bystep basis to solve the problem. LIGHT DUTY DIESEL SERVICE Diesel engines are now commonplace in both light and midduty trucks. BATTERY TESTING/ELECTRICAL SYSTEM We discuss the various testers available today and provide tips regarding testing of batteries and electrical systems. MARCH/APRIL A/C SERVICE This article discusses the latest in A/C service equipment and provides tips on refrigerant recovery. FUEL SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS The fuel pump isn t always to blame. Here we examine all potential root causes of fuel delivery concerns. We ll help technicians better understand how to trouble-shoot for problems. EXHAUST EMISSIONS DIAGNOSIS We use a current model car as the basis for exploring the hightech ways carmakers are lowering emissions and improving fuel economy. All of these new systems must be understood in order to properly repair them when something goes wrong. HYBRID SERVICE Training is essential for hybrid service. In this article, we discuss the basics of hybrid systems and precautions necessary to avoid component damage and personal injury. MAY/JUNE COMPUTER REFLASHING The ins and outs of reprogramming control modules to address specific repairs and to accommodate factory software updates. SUSPENSION SERVICE We discuss diagnosis and replacement of specific upper and lower ball joints. BRAKE REPAIR We examine how to analyze premature brake wear problems. We will show how to do this to solve potential future issues and satisfy customers. COOLING SYSTEM SERVICE This article discusses the entire engine cooling system, including drive belts, water pump, thermostat, radiator and hoses. We ll also explain how current model vehicles fully integrate cooling system temperatures into the computer settings for driveability. JULY/AUGUST O 2 AND AIR/FUEL SENSORS This article discusses the differences between types of oxygen sensors and air/fuel ratio sensors for a better understanding of this topic. SYNTHETIC OIL Today s synthetic engine oil technology is wonderful, but specific applications can vary. We discuss which type of oil is best suited for various engine applications. ALIGNMENT AND WHEEL BALANCE Too often, technicians forget the importance of these key ingredients toward eliminating NVH issues. This article discusses various tips for both procedures. KEY FOB NIGHTMARES The keyless ignition system is erratic. The key fob battery is OK. Before you tell the customer to buy a new key fob, here are the important troubleshooting tips to make sure the problem doesn t lie somewhere else. ENGINE PRE-OILING Whenever a shop rebuilds an engine or installs a rebuilt or factory-new engine replacement, pre-oiling the engine prior to startup is absolutely critical to avoid engine damage and comebacks for the shop. Simply cranking the engine without spark doesn t do the job. We explain this vital procedure. THREAD CHASING When female threaded holes require a cleanup due to burrs, etc., running a cutting tap can easily weaken the threads. A specialty chasing tap is required that re-forms the thread.
