What Is DCIM? Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) 1 DCIM tools monitor, measure, manage and/or control data center utilization and energy consumption of all IT-related equipment (such as servers, storage and network switches) and facility infrastructure components (such as power distribution units [PDUs] and computer room air conditioners [CRACs]). Environmental Monitoring Asset Management Space / Capacity Planning 1 Gartner Research definition
What Is DCIM? Existing DCIM systems tend to serve IT or Facilities very well, and be less than optimal for other stakeholders in the data center Typically provide snapshot dashboards of key metrics for the audience implementing the system Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) Key environmental metrics Temperatures, humidity, Power use Alerts
What Is DCIM? Small sample of some stakeholders in the data center, metrics that they re most concerned with, and some DCIM applications that tend to serve each group the t best. Trend is for consolidation of these silos for one DCIM system to serve all needs eds IT / Operations / Finance Asset Management Capacity Management Rack Utilization Network utilization Power & Environmental monitoring Alarming FieldView Nlyte Raritan DC Track Emerson Trellis / IBM APC - StruxureWare Facilities Power & Environmental monitoring Alarming Control of HVAC / Power infrastructure Trending of data points Bldg Mgmt. How Are Dashboards Being Used?
How Are Dashboards Being Used? Track PUE and energy use Capacity management Enable reporting of data center metrics, trends Manage / optimize HVAC system operations Utility Program Reporting Establish baseline Track energy savings from projects M&V energy savings for specific projects
The Westin Building- Carrier Hotel / Internet Exchange, Seattle, WA Dashboard installed in a colocation suite Bldg. owner Installed cold/ hot aisle separation Dashboard provided incentive project base line and verification» 271,556 kwh / yr. savings Dashboard use & containment expanding to additional owner operated suites
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Confirm economizer cooling performing as expected Commissioned supply fan operations to meet design specification Instituted supply air temperature reset to reduce airflow- 30F delta T vs. 20F design Monitor use of HPC clusters to schedule outages when least disruptive to end users Highlight efficiency and reliability of data center to internal & external stakeholders
King County Government Data Center Used for capacity management / asset optimization Developing cost accounting for each agency, framework for future charge backs Tracking server utilization for future virtualization efforts Verification of energy billing from building owner Easier reporting for management

Preliminary Conclusions Dashboards are very effective tools for facility managers Simplifies participation in utility incentive projects Participants are using systems primarily to optimize HVAC systems Effectiveness dependent on the people operating the data center IT equipment efficiency measures are likely to emerge in the future. Monitoring of IT power usage will likely be a key component for validating these measures.
