COURSES YOUNG ARTISTS ANIMATORS The Young Artists course is designed for young people in school years 5-7 (or equivalent if home-schooled) and offers an exciting opportunity for young people to explore their creativity through traditional and experimental art techniques. Everyone is encouraged to stretch their imagination and use a wide range of media to develop their own unique style. Working together in the studio allows students to share ideas and talk about each other s work in an encouraging and supportive atmosphere. Young Artists don t need to be experts in painting or drawing to enjoy this class - the only requirement is an enthusiasm for art. Young Artists will need to wear old clothes as they will get messy! This course is for potential animators who want to have fun, see their characters come to life and explore how cartoons are made. The course gives students an insight into the world of animation, focusing on hand drawn animation with the chance to do cutout and stop motion. Animators will also look at storyboarding and character design and there will be opportunities to learn about movement and timing. Industry-standard equipment will be available for Animators to try out the key principles of animation. The only limit will be the Animator s imagination. 2 3

DIGITAL FILM EDITORS FASHION DESIGNERS This course is designed for potential film editors with little or no film making experience. Experienced tutors will harness the Digital Film Editor s enthusiasm and guide them through the exciting experience of creating a short film. Through a series of practical workshops, students will gain hands-on experience in writing, filming and editing their own material. The eight-week course will cover several aspects of film making including: shot-lists and storyboarding, editing and using YouTube effectively to broadcast completed films. The tutor will help students to acquire a working understanding of the importance of editing as well as gaining knowledge of how to put together a short film that looks great. This course offers a great introduction to the world of fashion. Focusing on the skills needed to research, develop and present the Fashion Designer s ideas, it will give an insight into the industry and provide valuable experience for anyone with a passion for fashion, a flair for design and those interested in tailoring. Each session will be set around a theme where students will develop their illustration techniques using a range of media to present ideas effectively. There is a practical element to the course, providing students with the opportunity to experiment with different creative techniques and materials. 4 5

FINE ARTISTS MIXED MEDIA The Fine Artists course will give students an opportunity to get their creative process flowing and they will be given guidance on how to spark this creativity, through various means, including researching other artists work. The course consists of drawing, painting, collage, 3D work and other inspiring artistic techniques. Key skills for pursuing further education in a creative field, such as being able to discuss their own and other artists work, will also be taught. Students self-motivated projects and development will be encouraged. Fine Artists will make at least one group visit to The Gallery (on the AUB campus). Giving students the space to experiment in a specialist environment, the Mixed Media course may help students to decide what subject they would like to specialise in. The course will allow students to sample four different disciplines over eight weeks and is ideal for those who are still exploring where their artistic interests lie. Mixed Media students will have the opportunity to try 3D modelling, photography, film editing and fine art. Experienced tutors will guide students through each subject giving expert tasters in each discipline. All students will be given support and advice to enable them to engage fully and push their creative boundaries. 6 7

PHOTOGRAPHERS SPECIAL EFFECTS ARTISTS This course is ideal for novice and amateur photographers who would like to learn about camera controls and develop an awareness of visual elements and composition. Following an introduction to Mac computers and basic Adobe Photoshop tools, students will have the opportunity to explore image manipulation and creation. The final outcome will be a presentation and discussion of the resulting images. Throughout the course other artists work and ideas will be introduced to broaden Photographers contextual and visual knowledge. The University will provide cameras but students are welcome to use their own camera if they prefer. Spectacular make-up and dramatic special effects can transform a production. This introductory course will give students an insight into the skills needed to play a key creative role in performance, fashion, film and television. The make-up artist is an important member of any production team and this practical course will show students the basic skills needed to create realistic special effects make up. Experienced tutors will guide students through the stages of creating fabulous effects and all materials will be supplied by the University. 8 9
