2 Important Information The information contained in this brochure is accurate at the date of publication. However, courses, University services and the content of this brochure remain subject to change. Changes may be necessary to comply with the requirements of accrediting bodies or to keep courses contemporary through updating practices or areas of study. Circumstances may arise outside the reasonable control of the University, leading to required changes. Such circumstances include, industrial action, unexpected student numbers, significant staff illness (where a course is reliant upon a person s expertise), unexpected lack of funding, severe weather, fire, civil disorder, political unrest, government restrictions and serious concern with regard to the transmission of serious illness making a course unsafe to deliver. After a student has taken up a place with the University, the University will look to give early notification of any changes and try to minimise their impact, offering suitable alternative arrangements or forms of compensation where it believes there is a fair case to do so. Offers of a place to study at the University will provide up to date information on courses. The latest key information on courses can be found at Please check this website before making any decisions. The University s contract with its students (following an acceptance by a student of any offer of a place) does not confer thirdparty benefits for the purposes of the Contract (Rights of Third Parties) Act BA (Hons) Fashion Marketing at the University of Leeds The University of Leeds is a top civic university in the heart of one of the UK s most fashionable and student friendly cities. Our exciting course encourages innovative thinking for the conceptualisation and implementation of fashion marketing strategies. You will learn about how the fashion industry operates in the 21st century global marketplace underpinned by critical evaluation of theory and contextual studies. The course is designed to develop and enhance a range of skills to meet the diverse employment possibilities open to our graduates, and you will study in a stimulating and internationally renowned academic environment. The programme balances an understanding of the fashion industry and the complexities of consumer behaviour with marketing and communication strategies enable you to formulate innovative solutions for the promotion and development of fashion products and ideas.
3 A framework of academic studies, delivered by experts from a range of design disciplines, gives a dynamic context to the specialist fashion marketing and trend studies modules. Complementary skills and knowledge can also be gained through a choice of options offered by the School of Design and a wide range of discovery modules offered by schools from across the university. Learning and teaching takes place through lectures, seminars and tutorials, and one-to-one contact with tutors. Practical work is assessed through portfolios, mood boards, trend packages, promotional materials and displays. Theories and knowledge are assessed through examinations, reports, essays, critiques, personal reflections and a business plan. The teaching staff are committed to quality research and academic excellence and have many years of direct experience within the fashion industry and fashionrelated industries. The School of Design is located next to Clothworkers Court, at the heart of the University Campus. Facilities include: spacious, well-equipped design and art studios and purpose-built PC and Apple Macintosh computer clusters. The University of Leeds International Textiles Archive (ULITA) and the M&S Company Archive are valuable on-site research resources for the programme. Course structure The BA (Hons) Fashion Marketing is a three-year programme of study or a four-year course if you decide to undertake an optional year out in industry or study abroad after year 2. In Year 1, you will develop a sound understanding of the fashion industry through an overview and evaluation of the fashion marketplace and fashion production processes including product development, materials and components, manufacturing processes and supply chains. The principles of marketing will be fully understood using marketing mix theories and marketing research practices. You will become aware of the consumers role in the fashion system through target marketing and segmentation theories and practice. You will also investigate the driving forces of fashion in both historical and contemporary contexts. Fashion styles and key theories will be discussed and debated to encourage an appreciation of fashion from a broader perspective. Opportunity will be given to critically appraise the impact of technologies, design, culture, retailing, marketing, globalisation and influential people on the development of lifestyle trends. Through observation and identification of significant themes you will begin to understand how to identify the potential future drivers of fashion and discuss the implications for the marketing of fashion products from a global perspective in the 21st century.
4 In Year 2 Building on your study at level 1 you will develop a critical understanding of marketing communications as applied to a range of fashion-related industries with a particular emphasis on advertising and public relations. You will critically appraise aspects of branding through an overview and evaluation of theories and practice. Innovations in fashion media will be critically evaluated in order to develop suitable promotional materials for an advertising campaign or event. To further your knowledge of fashion product, you will investigate the technologies used by the apparel industry for the production of garments. You will also be introduced to the fascinating world of fashion forecasting and learn how to predict the next big lifestyle trend. You will be able to identify, interpret and analyse trends in relation to design and also consumer lifestyles for fashion-related product industries. In Year 3, you will further develop your knowledge through a project of particular interest to you, using research and creative skills developed and enhanced throughout the course. During this year you take ownership of the entire fashion marketing planning process from concept formation, research and commercial viability assessment, through to the submission of detailed and professional marketing and promotional strategies. You will identify and propose your individual plan of study and present your ideas to a team of academics and fashion industry professionals for appraisal and critique. Your individual project content and time plan will demonstrate your advanced understanding of the contemporary fashion marketplace, consolidating and building on previous knowledge gained at levels one and two in marketing, communications, consumer behaviour and forecasting. You will identify potential new markets for future development through the investigation of mega trends and produce innovative concepts for the marketing of fashion products and ideas. Your work will be presented using written and visual communications aligned to your chosen market and consumer and demonstrate your innovation. Concepts will also evidence an understanding of contemporary, technological, ethical and commercial practice.

6 University scholarships The University offers a range of undergraduate scholarships and bursaries to support students from less affluent backgrounds. Please go to the University of Leeds website at for full details. Applying to study in the School of Design Applications should be made online through UCAS, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. Please go to their website at for details of how to apply. The University of Leeds UCAS code is L23 and the UCAS course code is W231. Entry requirements The School of Design bases its offer of a place on careful consideration of information provided in the UCAS application form. Pre-A level qualifications, including GCSEs, your personal statement and academic reference are all of importance. Good performance at A level (or equivalent) is regarded as essential. You are required to have a minimum of six subjects at GCSE level to grade C or above, including English Language. Maths or a science subject and Art or Design are expected. We typically ask for three A level subjects to grades A, B, B, including an art or design subject. Applicants without Art or Design A level, who are taking Business Studies A level, may be considered where they have GCSE Art or Design at a high grade and/or display a creative aptitude in their UCAS application. Equivalent qualifications may also be considered. Art and design foundation course qualifications are welcomed as an additional qualification to A levels, but are not a requirement for entry. Interviews and portfolio viewings do not usually form part of the selection process for the course. However, where it is felt that an interview would be of particular benefit or where it is considered that further information is required to assess a candidate s potential, applicants may be invited to attend for an informal interview and portfolio viewing to show their practical and written work. Admissions tutors will consider the candidate s experience, skills and knowledge in relation to the academic and practical demands of the course. The School particularly welcomes applications from mature students and where appropriate, interviews mature candidates undertaking a relevant validated access course in art and design. The School of Design actively participates in the University of Leeds Access to Leeds Scheme. This widening access scheme gives special consideration to applicants whose personal circumstances may affect their ability to demonstrate their full potential through grades alone. Successful applicants receive an alternative, lower offer alongside a standard offer. For further information please go to or contact [email protected]. For full details about our entry requirements, please visit the Undergraduate Study section of the School of Design website at Visiting the School of Design If we offer you a place, you will be invited to attend one of our School open days, where you will have the opportunity to find out more about studying Fashion Marketing at Leeds. You are recommended to attend one of these events, which include presentations about the course and a tour of the School.
