1 ART DESIGN ARCHITECTURE FOUNDATION COURSE
2 WELCOME to the UFP Art, Design and Architecture Foundation Course. We hope that this brochure will answer all of your questions about the course. Please contact us to discuss your individual situation and for further information. (See page 8 for our details) WHY DO I NEED A FOUNDATION COURSE? The course enables you to build a portfolio, which is essential for your application to UK art, design and architecture degree courses. In the first term of the course you will gain experience in a wide range of art and design disciplines. This will allow you to make a well informed decision when you choose the subject you want to focus on at university. The course will allow you to acquire the skills, understanding and independence necessary to making good progress when you begin undergraduate studies. Art and design education in the UK is unique and internationally respected because of its focus on creativity, experimentation and originality. Your foundation course will support you in developing these qualities in your own work. OUR RESULTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES Having passed our course, 100% of our students have achieved a place on a UK undergraduate degree. We have a proven track record of placing our students in top ranking universities, including: WHAT MAKES OUR COURSE SO UNIQUE? Small class sizes Our class sizes are much smaller than other foundation courses. This ensures that you will receive a high level of individual attention, enabling you to make faster progress than you would in a larger class. One-to-one support Throughout the entire university application process, you will receive a great deal of individual advice and support in choosing the right universities for you, writing a strong UCAS personal statement, building an impressive portfolio, and preparing yourself to be confident in your university interviews. Made-to-measure teaching Our tutors respond to your individual needs and provide you with teaching that is appropriate to your level of experience and expertise. While many of our students have a background in art and design, we also have a long history of working with students who have little or no previous experience. If you are passionate about your subject and ready to work hard, our course will allow you to realise your ambition. For students with little prior art and design experience, we offer a special Intensive Pre-Sessional Course. (See page 6 for more details.) Creative London Our college is situated in the very heart of the city, and allows easy access to London s famously vibrant culture. Through field trips and independent visits, you will be introduced to many of London s important galleries, museums, buildings and special events. Our students find that this exciting environment strongly inspires their own creativity. The tutors at UFP provide you with skills and techniques, and support you in making a very comprehensive portfolio, and mock interviews that prepare you for your entry to university. It has been a great choice. Sevdenur, Turkey Interior Design, University of the Arts, London: Chelsea College of Art and Design 2 3
3 COURSE DESCRIPTION The UFP Art, Design and Architecture Foundation Course is a one-year intensive, studio based course, aimed at preparing students for undergraduate degree level studies in the following subject areas: Architecture Interior Design Landscape Architecture Fine Art Graphic Design Illustration Photography Product Design Film and Theatre Set Design Our students are from a range of cultural backgrounds, ages, and levels of previous experience, so the course is suitable for anyone with an interest in art, design or achitecture, including: Anyone wishing to prepare themselves for university level education International students who want to adapt to a European teaching style Those who have decided to make a subject or career change TEACHING AND FACILITIES The course is taught by practising artisits and designers with a wide range of expertise. Teaching is delivered by means of technical presentations, guided practice, and individiual and group tutorials, as well as theory and contextual studies lectures, seminars, and independent assignments. The college s facilities included a large suite of Apple Mac computers featuring the latest Abode software, A4 and A3 colour printers, and a dedicated studio equipped with all the necessary tools, materials and media for producing a wide range of 2D and 3D work. COURSE STRUCTURE The programme is comprised of 3 stages. As the course progresses, there is a gradual transition from tutor-directed learning to student-initiated projects. This encourages students to develop the independence which is essential for successful degree level studies. Stage One: Learning Skills & Context During the first stage of the course, students study 4 curriculum areas, and are introduced to the fundamental skills, processes and ideas that underpin these disciplines: Fine Art Graphic Design Photography Spatial Design Short projects and practical assignments provide the context in which students learn to research, generate and develop ideas. This initial stage also enables students to recognise where their strengths lie, and make an informed decision regarding their choice of subject for degree level studies. Stage Two: Specialist Pathway & Progression Having chosen their major subject for the second and third stages of the course, students also select one other area to be studied as a supporting minor subject. In Stage Two students work on longer projects, applying and refining the skills, methodologies and ideas introduced in Stage One. The projects completed in Stage Two form the core of each student s subject-specific portfolio, and students develop a more informed understanding of their discipline, both in terms of studio practice and contextual studies. Stage Three: Independent Project The focus of the final stage of the course is the further development of each student s independence and individuality. Students propose and undertake a single self-initiated project, which reflects their personal interests, skills and intended direction for future studies. This project provides students with an opportunity to integrate and apply their learning from throughout the year. I chose this course because I wanted to strengthen my portfolio for university entry. I learned so much from my tutors. What I like is that they focus on each person s ability and potential, helping us to develop our skills, techniques and understanding. I couldn t have received any better support. 4 THE PRE-SESSIONAL COURSE UCAS: THE UNIVERSITY APPLICATION PROCESS One of the unique aspects of the UFP Art, Design and Architecture Foundation Course is the very high level of individual support and advice that students receive. Achieving a place on a UK art, design or architecture degree course is a two-part process: PART ONE: Application Support The UFP Art, Design and Architecture Intensive Pre-Sessional Course has been specially designed for students with little or no previous experience in art and design, and for students that have not received a systematic training in basic observational drawing skills. The course introduces students to a range of fundamental techniques and concepts which are essential to all art and design disciplines. Through intensive practice sessions and independent mini-assignments, students will learn to observe and draw with confidence, accuracy and sensitivity. The Pre-Sessional Course runs immediately prior to the start of the UFP Art, Design and Architecture Foundation Course. Skills gained during the course include: Skills gained during the course include: Working with negative space Working with negative space Sighting and recording angles and proportions Sighting and recording angles and proportions Using picture planes to translate 3D spaces and forms into Using picture planes to translate 3D spaces and forms into 2D 2D drawings drawings Compositional awareness and image structuring Compositional awareness and image structuring Observing and building tonal gradients Observing and building tonal gradients Various approaches to tonal application Various approaches to tonal application Exploring the expressive potential of a range of media Exploring the expressive potential of a range of media Developing and refining these key skills allows students to make accelerated progress once they commence the UFP Art, Design and Architecture Foundation Course, and significantly improves their ability to secure good university offers. When applying to UK universities, students are required to produce a personal statement in which they discuss their work, and illustrate their understanding of their chosen subject. During the first term of the course, students receive a series of Critical Studies lectures in which they are introduced to the history of art, design and architecture, and learn about many of the most significant contemporary and historic artists, designers and architects. This is invaluable in enabling students to write a strong and well-informed personal statement. PART TWO: Portfolio Preparation and University Interviews All UK art, design and architecture courses require applicants to attend an interview with a portfolio of their work. Each student is required to demonstrate their ability to plan, research and develop ideas, as well as employ appropriate methods and techniques, and evaluate and reflect on their work. The UFP Art, Design and Architecture Foundation Course is designed to enable students to excel in this key part of their application to university. The projects completed throughout the course are devised to support each student in producing a portfolio which evidences all the required skills, with substanital guidance and practical support. Furthermore, during the year, students are required to regularly present their work to their peer group and the teaching staff. This strengthens each student s ability to effectively express their ideas, and ensures that students communicate with clarity and confidence. Prior to their first university interview students also receive one-to-one mock interviews. I came here to live and study with people from different cultures, as well as to understand the future of modern art. It was a great experience making my portfolio. I realised that for artists it is very important not just to talk about your work but to know how to present it to other people. Without my tutors this would not have been possible! 6 Stepan, Russia Fine Art, University of the Arts, London: Chelsea College of Art and Design 7

CONTACT DETAILS University Foundation Programme (UFP), David Game College, United House, 9 Pembridge Road, London W11 3JY Phone: +44 (0) Fax: +44 (0) info@ufp.uk.com Find us on Facebook ( and Twitter (@UFPUK) I selected the UFP at David Game College, London, for my foundation course because I have friends that did the course before and their comments and advice about it were all positive. I would recommend the UFP to friends because of the good teachers. I would describe the teaching standards on the UFP as high. It also helped me to be more confident with my English. 8 Hanaa, Italy Architecture, University of the Arts, London: Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design
