2 Art AA, AA-T from All Three Colleges Art History The Art Major with an Emphasis in Art History is designed for students who wish to pursue the study of the visual arts in a social, political, philosophical, and cultural context as a foundation for understanding human history and creativity. The study of art history develops a greater sensitivity to art-related issues, the ability to think critically about art and history, and to appreciate the artistic expression of varied cultures and civilizations. AA, AA-T Major Requirements: semester units Studio Art The AA for Transfer (AA-T) in Studio Arts will prepare students for transfer into bachelor s degree programs in Studio Arts and similar majors. Students gain historical and contemporary perspectives on the creation of art, the ability to analyze and understand compositional structure, and hands-on skills working in a variety of media. AA-T Major Requirements: semester units AA from College of San Mateo Fine Arts The Associate in Arts (AA) degree in Fine Arts provides the student with both a historical and contemporary perspective on the creation of art, the ability to analyze and understand compositional structure and historical significance, and hands-on skills working in a variety of media. Major Requirements: semester units Photography Students majoring in Photography with learn to utilize the photographic medium as a means of self-expression. They will learn to create effective photographic compositions using design principles and to demonstrate the ability to produce a fine print and create a professional presentation. Students will critically analyze and evaluate a photographic exhibit. Major Requirements: 21 semester units 2

3 Digital Art & Animation AA from CaÑada The Multimedia Art & Technology program at Cañada College trains students in the fundamentals of animation, digital photography and imaging, and web design. With three state-of-the-art studios, the program provides students with access to the latest hardware and software used in industry. More importantly, the faculty bring over 70 years of combined industry experience from places like Disney, Pixar, Macromedia, and EA/Maxis into the classroom. Major Requirements: 24 semester units 3D Animation & Video Game Arts The 3D Animation & Video Game Art program is a comprehensive program that puts equal emphasis on the artistic and the technical side of 3D modeling and animation. Courses cover material that will take the student through the whole production process and work-flow of 3D animation, from storyboarding and conceptualization to the final delivery of the rendered product. Classes are taught in a state-of-the-art computer studio with the latest versions of industry-standard software packages. Graduates and former students in the 3D Animation & Video Game Art program have been offered jobs at companies and studios such as Electronic Arts, Disney, Zynga, DreamWorks, Sledgehammer Games, Hotwire, and Google, among many others. 4 In t er ior Design AS from CaÑada For more than 40 years, the Interior Design Department has offered courses to individuals interested in preparing for careers in the professional fields of interior design with an emphasis in Sustainable and Kitchen & Bath Design. Included in the program are a transfer program, an AS degree, and five certificate programs. The AS degree and Interior Design Certificate of Achievement meet the minimum education requirements for the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) allied membership. These, as well as the Kitchen & Bath Design Certificate and the Residential & Commercial Design Certificate fulfill the educational requirement for the IDEX exam to become a Certified Interior Designer (CID) in California. The Kitchen & Bath Design Certificate is accredited by the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA). Completion of this Certificate prepares students for the Associate Kitchen & Bath Design (AKBD), the Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD), and the Certified Bath Designer (CBD) exams. 5 Architecture AS from College of San Mateo Most architecture majors, after completing their studies and obtaining their Professional Degree, will choose to obtain their license to practice architecture and go into private practice as owners of their own firm. As practitioners, they will service a wide variety of clientele: private, business, institutional, and governmental. Others may elect to find employment in existing architectural firms, as members of their teams, in the design and development of the built environment. Some may elect to do advanced work in fields such as art, historic restoration, product development, business administration, land development, etc. Others find opportunities in related fields that utilize the technical and problem-solving skills obtained from their architectural education. 6 Fashion Design AS from CaÑada & Skyline Fashion Merchandising The Associate in Science (AS) degree in Fashion Merchandising requires the combination of the creative and business skill sets. Strategy and marketing knowledge is essential for the skilled professional. Fashion merchandising requires good analytical, communication, and visual skill sets. As the global retail sector diversifies and multiple channels including web and store based operations grow, there is a growing need for merchandisers. Major Requirements: semester units AS from CaÑada Custom Dressmaking/Small Business Oriented; Technical (Apparel Industry Oriented) The Fashion Department at gives students a thorough introduction to apparel design and manufacturing. Students are prepared to find employment in an apparel design firm or to start their own business. They will develop essential skills and techniques in sketching, fabric selection, sewing, draping, and pattern making. Business skills are learned through an entrepreneurship course which helps students to establish goals, record keeping, business promotion, and the advantages and disadvantages of self-employment. The fashion industry is vast and diverse with many creative, rewarding opportunities in ready-to-wear or high fashion design. Custom Dressmaking/Small Business Oriented Major Requirements: 35.5 semester units Technical (Apparel Industry Oriented) Major Requirements: 33 semester units 6 Theater Costuming The Theater Costuming Program provides students with an introduction to the costuming industry, including the many types of jobs available in this field, from designing to costume construction and show production. Students learn historic and theatrical styles, pattern making skills, tailoring and construction skills as well as design and illustration techniques to prepare them for a job in costuming. Students have the opportunity to work on actual productions through class work or internships. Major Requirements: 28 semester units

7 Theatre Arts AA, AA-T from CaÑada The Cañada College Theatre Arts Department presents a program rich in depth and diversity. Students pursuing a career in the theatre arts or simply desiring creative expression will find a wide array of relevant and exciting courses in the drama department. As well as an extensive opportunity to put their developing knowledge and talent to work in both the creative and technical aspects of production. Students have the opportunity to perform, direct, design, build, crew, and manage plays ranging from broad comedy to edgy dramatic works. The Cañada Theatre Arts Department can point with satisfaction to a significant and steadily growing number of its former students who go on to professional stage, film, and television work as performers, producers, and technicians. 8 Kinesiology AA-T from All Three Colleges AA from CaÑada The AA for Transfer (AA-T) in Kinesiology prepares students for careers in fitness and healthrelated fields. Course topics include basic human anatomy and physiology; the field of kinesiology and its sub-disciplines; socio-cultural and historical influences; athletic injury care; and nutrition. Courses offered are transferable as lower division coursework toward a bachelor s degree in Kinesiology. Upon completion of the associate degree, students gain an understanding of human movement as well as a solid foundation to build their selected sub-discipline in Kinesiology at a four-year university. AA-T Major Requirement: semester units AA Major Requirement: 27 semester units AA from CaÑada & Skyline Dance The Dance program allows students to develop technical, aesthetic, and artistic skills required to pursue a fouryear dance degree. Courses cover topics on ballet, modern dance, jazz dance, history, anatomy, dance composition, and music. Upon completion of the program, the dancers will possess good problem-solving skills, an ability to work with people, good health and physical stamina, along with flexibility, agility, coordination, and grace, a sense of rhythm, a feeling for music, and a creative ability to express themselves through movement. Major Requirement: semester units AS from CaÑada 8 Fitness Professional The Associate in Science (AS) degree in Fitness Professional prepares students to enter the fitness/ wellness/health industry. As the industry grows, so will the demand for highly qualified and certified fitness professionals. Courses cover terminology for exercise physiology, anatomy, body mechanics, health assessment, nutrition, weight management, cardiovascular pathology, and related risk factors. Students also learn practical fitness testing assessment, exercise programming, and techniques to change health behaviors. Major Requirement: semester units

9 Film AA from College of San Mateo The Film program at College of San Mateo specializes in film and media studies, film history and criticism, and the new global media culture. Individuals may obtain an A.A. in Film, which trains them in the history, theory and craft of diverse styles of film art. Many graduates continue their education at a four-year university, majoring in subjects such as film, television, digital media or theater. Graduates are also well-equipped to pursue internships, training or coursework in film and media production. Career opportunities for those with an A.A., B.A. or advanced degree in Film include journalistic film reviewing, film education, film curating, and production in the film and television industries. 10 Music AA from All Three Colleges AA-T from Skyline CaÑada College The Music Department at Cañada College provides a variety of courses to introduce students to the many ways of knowing music. The selection of courses in the music major gives a student several different creative outlets and prepares an open mind for the wide array of possibilities in the rapidly changing music world. Some courses focus on applications of technology, and others address the intersection of music and social contexts of its production. Note that this major does not specifically support transfer into most four-year degree music programs. Major Requirements: 20 semester units College of San Mateo The College of San Mateo provides a creative environment where every student may become enriched through an active association with the art of music and faculty who are active in the music profession. The Music Department places a strong emphasis upon performance as well as composition in both traditional and electronic media. 11 Electronic Music AA from College of San Mateo The Electronic Music major combines the areas of music, electronics, and computer science with a primary emphasis on music. This major is designed for students who intend to transfer to a four-year university. However, upon completion of the AA degree in this discipline, many individuals start their own electronic music studios, where they record music for videos, films, or individual artists, as well as compose their own music on electronic instruments. Completion of a Bachelor s degree in Electronic Music expands career opportunities to include performer, producer, recording engineer, and sound engineer.
