Some courses are also available at Ourimbah on the Central Coast and at Singleton in the Hunter Valley. Newcastle Art School, Hunter St Campus is a small, dedicated art facility in the heart of the city. It features landmark heritage buildings, a modern extension, specialist art library, new computer labs and a shopfront gallery. Ceramics, Fine Arts and Media Arts courses are conducted here. Newcastle Campus is situated on Maitland Rd, Tighes Hill, on a major transport route 3km from the city centre. It is a large, multidisciplinary campus with full student services and amenities. 2 Program/Course information Visual Communication Design SUBJECTS Graphic Design Visual Communication Printing AWARDS Diploma of Graphic Design 2 years full time ommand=getcourse&courseno=7891 This course is for people who want to develop the theoretical, practical and technical skills necessary to work as a graphic designer. The course is suitable for people who want to either work in a professional graphic design practice or as an independent freelance designer. You will learn how to solve problems creatively, be imaginative, think laterally and extend and transform problems by designing innovative solutions, and produce creative contemporary graphic designs. The course also teaches business planning, management skills in the development of a design project, how to allocate work and provide support and feedback, how to manage your own professional development, time management skills and performance in the workplace. Depending on the electives chosen, you can choose to specialise in print technologies, publication design, packaging, corporate identity, advertising, illustrative design, information graphics, web design, animation, digital photo-media, or digital visual media. It is for people with a strong creative flair for visual communications who want to produce graphic design in a commercial context. You will learn how to creatively resolve 2D and 3D design problems, manipulate and extend design concepts and contextualise them within design processes, individually and in collaboration with others. You will conduct research, source and manage information and its effective communication. You will learn how to produce creative design solutions taking into account the historical, social, environmental and ethical issues affecting design. You will explore a range of manual and digital technologies, media, typography and techniques. You will learn about the history and theory of design and about the contemporary design industry. You will develop music industry knowledge, and establish good working relationships in business. You will develop practical knowledge of copyright and royalties, and be able to negotiate and maintain contracts. You will be able to maintain music industry knowledge. You can also develop skills relevant to a small music business, such as promoting products and services, assessing performance and recording deals, and undertaking marketing activities. You can choose to learn other skills such as feasibility studies, audiovisual operations or touring a band. You will learn how to establish and manage contracts and address the legal and administrative requirements of a small music business. You will develop music industry knowledge, establish contractual and work relationships, and follow health, safety and security practices important to sound production. Fashion & Textiles Fashion SUBJECTS Fashion Design Millinery Design AWARDS Certificate IV in Clothing Production 1 year full time/4 years part time ommand=getcourse&courseno=7684 This course is for people who want to study fashion technology to acquire the skills to work in the fashion industry in the development and production of fashion clothing. This course is hands-on and practical, suitable for entry into the fashion industry. It provides broad-based training providing multiskilling across all facets of fashion production. You will learn about different areas of the fashion industry, including design concepts and product development, patternmaking and grading, custom garment making, the use of current and new technologies in CAD systems and operations for design and product development, working within the fashion supply/value chain, frontline management, and effective teamwork. The course comprises core and elective modules/units. You must complete at least five elective modules/units to receive the qualification. You will need access to plant and equipment to complete some of the modules/units in this course. Diploma of Textiles, Clothing & Footwear - 2 years full time Certificate IV in Fashion Design & Industry Practices 1 year full time ommand=getcourse&courseno=7803 This course is for people who want to acquire knowledge, practical skills and a sound understanding of fashion design required to work creatively as assistants in the fashion industry. It is for people with a strong creative flair for fashion and who want to work in fashion design firms. The course is suitable for people who can operate with entrepreneurial flair, and articulate their design ideas with confidence. The course covers in detail aspects of fashion production, administration, retailing, styling and garment assembly and production for ready to wear markets, and allows you to gain first-hand knowledge of fashion promotion, publishing, marketing, parades and events. Depending on your choice of electives, you can learn how to sew simple garments; apply basic skills to drawing the human figure; perform basic textile printing techniques; develop and modify textile designs; assist with fashion promotions or assist in retail merchandising of fashion design products. Certificate III in Headwear/Milinery 1 year part time ommand=getcourse&courseno=7679 This course is for people wanting the skills to safely work in the millinery industry. You will learn about the design, construction, blocking, trimming and finishing of millinery. In this course you will acquire the skills needed to safely work in the millinery industry. You will learn about production skills, millinery design, a range of different production support skills, occupational health and safety, and quality. The course allows you to combine on-thejob with off-the-job training. The course comprises core and elective modules/units. You must complete at least eleven elective modules/units to receive the qualification. It can also provide the skills to undertake a new direction in life. The Advanced Diploma of Fine Arts is a practical, studio-based course, incorporating a range of current professional practices, with high teaching contact hours. All teachers and many support staff are practising artists, recognised in the visual arts industry. This course helps you develop a vision, direction and style based on a synthesis of cognitive and practical skills, creativity and understanding. It emphasises studio work and is based on contemporary theory and professional practices in the visual arts industry. You will have the opportunity to access studios outside classes for practise, individual project work and exhibitions. The experience gained is intense and highly fulfilling, demanding of creative talent, skills and commitment. Guest artists, visiting lecturer programs, studio visits and frequent excursions to viewing sites and galleries are essential parts of the course. You will also learn about occupational health and safety, basic conservation and exhibition practices. A core of professional studies modules provide knowledge and skills essential to survival in the art world, including creative technologies, arts industry studies, art theory, history in context, exhibition practices, research and communication and drawing. The course gives you the opportunity to specialise in one of the following fine arts areas: painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking and photography. In Year One you gain a general foundation in a range of practical visual arts strands and core areas of professional studies, including drawing and theory. You can exit the course at this point with the Certificate IV in Fine Arts (7530). In Year Two you select two strands and continue with core areas of professional studies, including drawing and theory. You can exit the course at this point with the Diploma of Fine Arts (7531). In the final year you choose one major studio-based elective in Art Photography/Photomedia, Drawing, Painting, Printmaking or Sculpture. Diploma of Fine Arts 2 years full time/4 years part time o mmand=getcourse&courseno=7531 This course gives you a specialised education in the fine arts. The course is for people who want to be practising artists or people who intend working in support of professionals in the fine arts industry. It provides an opportunity to develop a direction and style, based on a combination of skills, creativity and understanding, with a core of drawing skills. The course has an emphasis on studio work and is based on professional practices in the visual arts industry. You have the opportunity to concentrate on two of the following fine arts discipline areas: painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and ceramics. Certificate IV in Fine Arts 1 year full time/2 years part time ommand=getcourse&courseno=7530 This course gives you a broad based education in the fine arts, with an emphasis on the language of drawing as a fundamental skill. It prepares you for entry into higher award courses, or gives you the necessary awareness and general skills for working in a range of fine arts disciplines associated with the arts industry. There is an emphasis on creating studio based art work, with a core of drawing, cultural and professional studies based on practices used by artists. Certificate III in Fine Arts 1 year full time ommand=getcourse&courseno=7853 This course introduces you to the basic practical, technical and creative skills used in a range of fine arts areas and prepares you for further study. It gives you practical experience in the safe use of studio-based processes and materials. You will also learn about basic history and contemporary art practices in the context of the fine arts. You can study a range of fine arts areas including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, basic digital arts. You learn to construct images exploring your own artistic ideas under the direction of artist teachers. You have the opportunity to gain essential drawing skills, design and composition skills, and build an awareness of contemporary art practices and presentation skills. You can also prepare a portfolio for entry into further training or self-employment/employment opportunities in fine arts. You gain experience across a range of visual arts areas as a basis for further studies. The course may provide you with a start to a career as an artist or assist you in work within an area of the visual arts or in related community arts or crafts areas. You learn about creating images, objects and forms in a range of visual arts areas under the direction of artist teachers. Certificate IV in Visual Art and Contemporary Craft 1 year full time ommand=getcourse&courseno=19114 This course is for people who want to become a visual artist/crafts practitioner. It is a practical, studio-based course, incorporating a range of current industry practices and studio-based support skills. The course provides you with practical skills and knowledge across a range of visual arts areas, or in one or two specialised areas. It gives you the skills to support a small visual arts practice or to work with or for other visual artists. On completion you will produce a portfolio of art work for use in application/s for further training, or to seek work in the visual arts industry. New Media Multimedia SUBJECTS Multimedia New Media From the editing strand, you will learn to operate a non-linear editing system, edit dialogue and sound, prepare an edit decision list and oversee an online edit. From the animation strand, you will learn to produce storyboards and rough animation, and create digital 2D and 3D animation and 3D models and images. From both strands, you will learn how to collaborate with others in the planning, developing and finalising of a screen production. You will develop a working knowledge of the Australian film and television industry, how to work safely, and use effective communication skills. Certificate IV in Multimedia 1 year full time ommand=getcourse&courseno=7633 This course is for people who want to gain employment in the multimedia industry. You will learn how to produce graphics, edit multimedia material, develop web/intranet sites/pages, author/ develop CD-ROMs, test games and design interfaces. Diploma in Communication & Media 1 year full time ommand=getcourse&courseno=313 This course will help you develop a broad range of skills in communication and media, opening up employment options across a wide range of industries. Depending on modules chosen, you will develop competencies in writing and editing, presentation, project management and small media production, interpersonal skills, the use of communication technology tools and a range of specialised technical, creative and/or conceptual skills. It may also prepare you for positions where you are required to exercise accountability for personal and group outcomes.
