C n f i g u r i n g a n d M n i t r i n g N e t A p p F i l e r s Cnfiguring and Mnitring NetApp Filers This chapter explains the prcedures invlved in cnfiguring and mnitring NetApp filers. 1.1 Administering the eg Manager t wrk with a NetApp Filer T achieve the abve, d the fllwing: 1. Lg int the eg administrative interface. 2. Add the NetApp Filer hardware t the eg Enterprise system as illustrated by Figure 1.1. Since the NetApp filer is a nn-prt-based cmpnent, the eg Enterprise system des nt autmatically discver the filer. Therefre, yu need t manually add the filer hardware t the eg Enterprise system. Fr mre details n adding cmpnents, refer t Cnfiguring and Mnitring Web Servers dcument. Figure 1.1: Adding a new NetApp Filer 3. Next, try t sign ut f the eg administrative interface. 4. Upn ding s, a LIST OF UNCONFIGURED TESTS listing the filer-specific tests requiring manual cnfiguratin, will appear (see Figure 1.2). 1

Click n the NetApp System test in the list f tests (see Figure 1.2) t cnfigure it (see Figure 1.3). Figure 1.3: Cnfiguring the NetApp System test 6. The NetApp System test reprts usage f system resurces by the NetApp filer. When the test cnfiguratin screen appears (see Figure 1.3), specify the fllwing: TEST PERIOD Hw ften shuld the test be executed HOST - The hst fr which the test is t be cnfigured. SNMPCOMMUNITY - The SNMP cmmunity name that the test uses t cmmunicate with the server. SNMPPORT The prt at which the server expses its SNMP MIB. The default is 161. SNMPVERSION By default, the eg agent supprts SNMP versin 1. Accrdingly, the default selectin in the SNMPVERSION list is v1. Hwever, if a different SNMP framewrk is in use in yur envirnment, say SNMP v2 r v3, then select the crrespnding ptin frm this list. SNMPCOMMUNITY The SNMP cmmunity name that the test uses t cmmunicate with the target device. This parameter is specific t SNMP v1 and v2 nly. Therefre, if the SNMPVERSION chsen is v3, then this parameter will nt appear. USERNAME This parameter appears nly when v3 is selected as the SNMPVERSION. SNMP versin 3 (SNMPv3) is an extensible SNMP Framewrk which supplements the SNMPv2 Framewrk, by additinally supprting message security, access cntrl, and remte SNMP cnfiguratin capabilities. T extract perfrmance statistics frm the MIB using the highly secure SNMP v3 prtcl, the eg agent has t be cnfigured with the required access privileges in ther wrds, the eg agent shuld cnnect t the MIB using the credentials f a user with access permissins t be MIB. Therefre, specify the name f such a user against the USERNAME parameter. 2

C n f i g u r i n g a n d M n i t r i n g N e t A p p F i l e r s AUTHPASS Specify the passwrd that crrespnds t the abve-mentined USERNAME. This parameter nce again appears nly if the SNMPVERSION selected is v3. CONFIRM PASSWORD Cnfirm the AUTHPASS by retyping it here. AUTHTYPE This parameter t appears nly if v3 is selected as the SNMPVERSION. Frm the AUTHTYPE list bx, chse the authenticatin algrithm using which SNMP v3 cnverts the specified USERNAME and PASSWORD int a 32-bit frmat t ensure security f SNMP transactins. Yu can chse between the fllwing ptins: MD5 Message Digest Algrithm SHA Secure Hash Algrithm ENCRYPTFLAG This flag appears nly when v3 is selected as the SNMPVERSION. By default, the eg agent des nt encrypt SNMP requests. Accrdingly, the ENCRYPTFLAG is set t NO by default. T ensure that SNMP requests sent by the eg agent are encrypted, select the YES ptin. ENCRYPTTYPE If the ENCRYPTFLAG is set t YES, then yu will have t mentin the encryptin type by selecting an ptin frm the ENCRYPTTYPE list. SNMP v3 supprts the fllwing encryptin types: DES Data Encryptin Standard AES Advanced Encryptin Standard ENCRYPTPASSWORD Specify the encryptin passwrd here. CONFIRM PASSWORD Cnfirm the encryptin passwrd by retyping it here. TIMEOUT Specify the duratin (in secnds) beynd which the SNMP query issues by this test shuld time ut. The default perid is 10 secnds. DETAILED DIAGNOSIS - T make diagnsis mre efficient and accurate, the eg Enterprise suite embeds an ptinal detailed diagnstic capability. With this capability, the eg agents can be cnfigured t run detailed, mre elabrate tests as and when specific prblems are detected. T enable the detailed diagnsis capability f this test fr a particular server, chse the On ptin. T disable the capability, click n the Off ptin. The ptin t selectively enabled/disable the detailed diagnsis capability will be available nly if the fllwing cnditins are fulfilled: The eg manager license shuld allw the detailed diagnsis capability Bth the nrmal and abnrmal frequencies cnfigured fr the detailed diagnsis measures shuld nt be 0. 7. Finally, click the Update buttn t register the changes. 8. Then, sign ut f the admin interface. 3

Cn f i g u r i n g a n d M n i t r i n g t h e N e t A p p U n i f i e d S t r a g e s y s t e m Cnfiguring and Mnitring the NetApp Unified Strage system 3.1 Hw des eg Enterprise Mnitr the NetApp USD? In rder t mnitr a NetApp USD, eg uses best-f-bth-wrlds cmbinatin f SNMP and NetApp Manageability SDK. While a few tests intercept SNMP traps t btain infrmatin f interest, a few thers directly pll the SNMP MIB f the device t pull ut the metrics. Mst tests hwever run the NetApp Manageability SDK cmmands fr metrics cllectin. T knw hw t cnfigure each f these mnitring mechanisms, refer t the sectins belw. 3.1.1 Cnfiguring the eg Agent t Receive SNMP Traps frm the NetApp USD Whenever an SNMP agent detects an errr in an SNMP-enabled netwrk device / applicatin, it sends SNMP traps with the errr infrmatin t a daemn prcess knwn as the SNMP Trap Receiver (Snmptrapd). In the eg Enterprise system, the external agent includes an ptinal SNMP trap receiver that can lg traps it receives int a lg file which can be parsed/interpreted by the external agent. Therefre, t enable the eg external agent which externally mnitrs the NetApp USD t intercept SNMP traps sent ut by that device, yu need t setup Snmptrapd n the external agent hst. The prcedure fr setting up Snmptrapd differs accrding t the perating system f the external agent hst. Fr detailed setup prcedures per perating system, refer t the Handling SNMP Traps using eg Enterprise dcument. Once the Snmptrapd is setup and started, yu need t cnfigure the fllwing tests t integrate with Snmptrapd fr pulling ut the desired metrics: Failure Traps test Shutdwn Traps test Warning Traps test T knw hw t cnfigure these tests, refer t the Mnitring NetApp USD dcument. 3.1.2 Cnfiguring the eg Agent t Pll the SNMP MIB f the NetApp USD t Pull Out the Metrics Yu can cnfigure tests t peridically pll the SNMP MIB f the NetApp USD fr cllecting metrics f interest. Fr this, yu have t SNMP-enable the NetApp USD. 3.1.3 Cnfiguring the eg Agent t Use the NetApp Manageability SDK The NetApp Manageability SDK (NMSDK) prvides resurces t develp applicatins that mnitr and manage NetApp strage systems. 7

Cn f i g u r i n g a n d M n i t r i n g t h e N e t A p p U n i f i e d S t r a g e s y s t e m Many tests that execute n the NetApp USD run API cmmands prvided by this SDK t extract the perfrmance metrics. T run these cmmands, the fllwing pre-requisites need t be fulfilled: An eg remte agent shuld be installed n a remte Windws/Unix hst in the envirnment. This remte agent shuld be assigned t the target strage device when managing that device using the eg administrative interface. The eg remte agent shuld be able t access the target strage device. The NMSDK shuld be available n the eg remte agent hst. T achieve this, fllw the steps discussed belw: Dwnlad the NMSDK frm the fllwing URL t any lcatin n the remte agent hst: http://supprt.netapp.cm/now/cgi-bin/sftware T dwnlad the NMSDK, yu will have t create a NOW lgin; t achieve this, g t the fllwing URL: http://supprt.netapp.cm The NMSDK will be dwnladed as a zip file named netapp-manageability-sdk- <SDK_versin>.zip. Extract the cntents f the zip file t any lcatin n the eg remte agent hst. Next, cpy the netapp-manageability-sdk-<sdk_versin>\netapp-manageability-sdk- <SDK_versin>\lib\java\classes\managentap.jar file frm the extracted cntents t the <EG_AGENT_INSTALL_DIR>\lib directry (n a Windws hst; n Unix, this will be the /pt/egurkha/lib directry). Then, start the eg agent. T invke the API cmmands, the eg agent has t be cnfigured with the privileges f a NetApp user with the fllwing privileges: lgin-http-admin,api-aggr-check-spare-lw,api-aggr-list-inf,apiaggr-mediascrub-list-inf,api-aggr-scrub-list-inf,api-cifs-status,api-clne-list-status,apidisk-list-inf,api-fcp-adapter-list-inf,api-fcp-adapter-stats-list-inf,api-fcp-servicestatus,api-file-get-file-inf,api-file-read-file,api-iscsi-cnnectin-list-inf,api-iscsi-initiatrlist-inf,api-iscsi-service-status,api-iscsi-sessin-list-inf,api-iscsi-stats-list-inf,api-luncnfig-check-alua-cnflicts-inf,api-lun-cnfig-check-cfmde-inf,api-lun-cnfig-checkinf,api-lun-cnfig-check-single-image-inf,api-lun-list-inf,api-nfs-status,api-perf-bjectget-instances-iter*,api-perf-bject-instance-list-inf,api-quta-reprt-iter*,api-snapshtlist-inf,api-vfiler-list-inf,api-vlume-list-inf-iter* Fr this purpse, yu can either grant the afresaid privileges t an existing user, r create a new user fr this purpse. The new user creatin prcess has been detailed in 3.1.3.1 belw. Once such a user is created, make sure that yu cnfigure the eg tests with the credentials f such a user. 3.1.3.1 Creating a New User with the Privileges Required fr Mnitring the NetApp USD As mentined earlier, t run the API cmmands prvided by the NMSDK and cllect metrics, the eg agent requires the fllwing privileges: lgin-http-admin,api-aggr-check-spare-lw,api-aggr-list-inf,apiaggr-mediascrub-list-inf,api-aggr-scrub-list-inf,api-cifs-status,api-clne-list-status,api-disklist-inf,api-fcp-adapter-list-inf,api-fcp-adapter-stats-list-inf,api-fcp-service-status,api-fileget-file-inf,api-file-read-file,api-iscsi-cnnectin-list-inf,api-iscsi-initiatr-list-inf,api-iscsiservice-status,api-iscsi-sessin-list-inf,api-iscsi-stats-list-inf,api-lun-cnfig-check-aluacnflicts-inf,api-lun-cnfig-check-cfmde-inf,api-lun-cnfig-check-inf,api-lun-cnfig-check- 8

Lgin t the system hsting the remte agent. 2. Cnnect t the strage cntrller s cnsle via SSH (say, using putty.exe). 3. Run the fllwing cmmand at the cnsle t create a new rle: useradmin rle add <Name_f_new_rle> -c "<A_brief_descriptin_f_new_rle>" -a <Cmmaseparated_list_f_privileges_t_be_granted_t_the_new_rle> Fr instance, t create a rle named eg_rle with all the privileges required fr mnitring NetApp USD, the cmmand will be as fllws: useradmin rle add eg_rle -c "rle fr eg user" -a lgin-http-admin,api-aggr-check-spare-lw,api-aggrlist-inf,api-aggr-mediascrub-list-inf,api-aggr-scrub-list-inf,api-cifs-status,api-clne-list-status,apidisk-list-inf,api-fcp-adapter-list-inf,api-fcp-adapter-stats-list-inf,api-fcp-service-status,api-file-get-fileinf,api-file-read-file,api-iscsi-cnnectin-list-inf,api-iscsi-initiatr-list-inf,api-iscsi-service-status,apiiscsi-sessin-list-inf,api-iscsi-stats-list-inf,api-lun-cnfig-check-alua-cnflicts-inf,api-lun-cnfigcheck-cfmde-inf,api-lun-cnfig-check-inf,api-lun-cnfig-check-single-image-inf,api-lun-list-inf,apinfs-status,api-perf-bject-get-instances-iter*,api-perf-bject-instance-list-inf,api-quta-reprt-iter*,apisnapsht-list-inf,api-vfiler-list-inf,api-vlume-list-inf-iter* 4. Once the rle is created successfully, prceed t create a new user grup and assign the newly created rle t it. The cmmand fr this will be: useradmin grup add <Name_f_new_grup> -c "<A_brief_descriptin_f_new_grup>" -r <Name_f_new_rle> Fr instance, t create a grup named eg_grup and t assign the eg_rle t it, the cmmand will be as fllws: useradmin grup add eg_grup -c "Grup fr eg user" -r eg_rle 5. Then, create a new user and add that user t the newly created grup. The cmmand fr the same is as fllws: useradmin user add Mname_f_new_user> -c "<A_brief_descriptin_f_new_user>" -g <Name_f_new_grup> Fr instance, t create a user named eg_user and t add that user t the eg_grup that yu created previusly, the cmmand will be as fllws: useradmin user add eg_user -c "User fr eg t mnitr NetApp" -g eg_grup This cmmand, upn executin, will request fr the passwrd f the new user. The passwrd is casesensitive, and shuld be atleast 8 characters lng. It must cntain atleast 2 alphabets and 1 digit. New passwrd: ReType new passwrd: Then, cnfirm the new user s passwrd by retyping it. 9
