1. Introduction The SecNurse is a bed occupancy detector for beds in nursing homes and elderly care environments. An alarm is sent when the patient leaves the bed, or leaves the bed and does not return within a specified time. The sensor is based on vision technology. With this technology the sensor can see and interpret situations. The greatest advantage with this technology is that the sensor, to a high extent, can be adjusted to the patient s needs. Other advantages are longer product lifetime than comparable products and no need for hygienical maintenance, due to the fact that the sensor does not demand physical contact. Another advantage of the SecNurse is the adjustable sensitivity. The sensor can either send an alarm when the patient leaves the bed or as soon as the patient sits on the bed edge. In addition to this User s Guide there is a shortguide with the most common functions. Important! The sensor is a technical aid, which substantially increases the efficiency per patient at regular supervision. However, it is only a complement to regular supervision, the SecNurse is not intended to replace ordinary supervision of the patient by the nursing staff. During certain situations, the sensor might fail to detect that the patient leaves the bed, incorrect usage or incorrect mounting substantially increases the risk. All staff and other concerned should be clearly informed about these matters. As a result of this Optex can therefore not be responsible for direct or indirect injuries that arise in connection with or as a result of using the sensor. - 4 -

3. Installation The installation procedure consists of five steps: 1. Mount the sensor on the wall 2. Connect the sensor 3. Configure the bed zone 4. Set timer and sensitivity settings 5. Make a functional test IMPORTANT! The installation must be made in a correct way in order to get proper functionality. Mounting instructions In order to get the sensor to work in a satisfying way, it must be mounted correctly. The first step in the mounting procedure is to attach the mounting bracket on the wall. Thereafter the sensor can be easily snapped on the bracket. The design of the bracket allows you to remove the sensor from the bracket, in order to move the sensor from one bed to another. The SecNurse can be mount on two different heights. When the bed zone has been configured, the sensor will automatically recognize which mounting height is being used. At both mounting positions it is important that the sensor is mounted horizontally, above the middle of the bed and on the wall. This is important for a correct detection angle. Large pieces of furniture should not be placed close to the bed, since this will affect the detection performance negatively. IMPORTANT! Always use the mounting bracket for optimal performance. - 8 -

3. Installation Mount the sensor on the wall The sensor must be mounted either above the head end of the bed or above the long side of the bed, according to the images below. In both cases the sensor should be placed above the centre of the bed side. Above the head end of the bed Above the long side of the bed If it is possible to install the sensor in both ways, the long side mounting should be preferred if a lifting pole is mounted on the bed or if the detection sensitivity setting should be set to detect the patient on the bed edge, see chapter 4, Using the sensor. Mounting position 1. Above the head end of the bed B A 1a. If there is not a lifting pole mounted on the bed, the sensor should be placed 180 cm above the floor, distance A in the figure. b. If there is a lifting pole mounted on the bed, the sensor should be placed 200 cm above the floor and the vertical distance between sensor and lifting pole must be at least 40 cm, distance B in the figure. Note! When the black mark on the sensor cord reaches the floor, the mounting height is 200 cm and when the red mark reaches the floor, the mounting height is 180 cm. 2 Place the bed close to the wall with the sensor placed just above the middle of the bed, according to the figure to the left. - 9 -

Normally the sensor should be placed above the middle of the long side, but if a lifting pole is mounted on the bed, the sensor should be 10-20 cm closer the foot end of the bed, distance B. Note! When the red mark on the sensor cord reaches the floor, the mounting height is 180 cm. 2. Place the bed close to the wall with the sensor placed just above the middle of the bed, or 10-20 cm closer to the foot end if there is a lifting pole on the bed. Fasten the mounting bracket Fasten the mounting bracket on the wall, thereafter the sensor can easily be snapped on the bracket. Fasten the mounting bracket on the wall. It is very important that the mounting bracket is placed horizontally. Place the sensor in the two notches of the mounting bracket. Gently press the sensor downwards. This procedure is reversible, which makes the sensor easy to move to another bed. - 10 -

3. Installation Consider the following The sensor automatically calculates different distances in order to decide whether the person leaves his or her bed or not. If the sensor is mounted in an incorrect way these distances will be wrong, which will disturb the detection performance and cause false alarms. Example. If the sensor is mounted lower than 180 cm the sensor will apprehend the bed to be much larger than it really is. The person leaving the bed will be apprehended to be enormous, and will for this reason be sorted away as an absurdity. - Pieces of furniture and light sources may disturb the performance In order to detect the patient leaving the bed, it is important that there are no pieces of furniture or other large objects blocking the person from the sensor. Even pieces of furniture only covering the person partly may effect the performance. Light sources placed close to the sensor may also effect the sensor performance. Connect the sensor Different alarm systems have different input contacts. In order to make it as easy as possible to connect the sensor to the alarm system, the sensor can be delivered with different contacts for different systems, which makes it possible to connect the sensor directly to every alarm system. (see page 5 for more details). NOTE! Different systems may have the same type of contact, but a different type of pin-out. - 11 -

3. Installation Switching diagrams Out of bed mode Relay 1 is activated when the patient leaves the bed (or after the countdown timer is started, depending on the sensitivity/timer). If the patient returns to the bed before the timer has elapsed the sensor will return to its normal mode, no alarm is sent. In case of an alarm, relay 1 is activated for 2 seconds. Relay 2 is activated when the patient is leaving the bed and turned off when the patient returns to bed again. 3. Installation Configure the detection zone In order to detect correctly, the sensor needs to know the correct position of the bed. By marking the two far corners of the bed with the remote control, the sensor receives this information. After marking the bed, the sensor starts to calculate the surrounding detection zones. Each time the sensor or bed has been moved the procedure has to be repeated. Configuration position 1. Above the head end of the bed 1. 2. Turn off the sensor, i.e. press down the ON/ OFF button. Note that the choice of installationbutton depends on whether the patient can leave the bed on that side. - 14 -

Place the remote control in the other corner of the same long side (at the foot end). Repeat the procedure from 3 to 5, but with the room/foot button instead of the wall/ head button. - 15 - point not found solid red When the red LED is turned on, the configuration procedure has not been completed. The procedure has to be repeated. When the sensor is placed above the long side of the bed, the configuration should be made according to the figure above.

3. Installation Adjust the sensor to the individual Different patients have different needs. Some patients run a large risk of injury and should not walk unattended, while other patients can manage to take care of themselves. The SecNurse can be configured to fulfil the demands of these patients individually. The configuration can be made by adjusting the timer and sensitivity setting. By increasing the timer the patient gets the possibility to get up from the bed for a short while, for example to go to the bathroom, without an alarm being sent. If the patient does return to the bed before the timer has elapsed, no alarm will be sent. In this way the patient gets increased privacy and a reduced number of false alarms benefits both the patient and the caregiver. The sensor normally detects when the patient leaves the bed. If an earlier alarm is required, the detection sensitivity can be set to send an alarm as soon as the patient sits on the bed edge. Standard there is a second output contact (out of bed mode) available which can be used according to the individual needs of a patient. For example to switch a light or to connect to the existing nurse call system so the staff gets a notification that a patient has left the bed but is not in an alarm situation. A second software function* the armed mode is available. In some situations it is needed that the SecNurse offers a contact (armed mode) to the nurse call system so that the nurse call system knows the sensor is turned on. Set the timer and sensitivity There are two options to adjust the sensor to the patient: 1. Set the timer When the patient leaves the bed the timer is started, if the patient has not returned within the selected time frame an alarm will be sent. Example. If the timer is set on 20 minutes the patient can leave the bed to go to the toilet without an alarm being sent, but if something happens and she/he does not return to the bed after 20 minutes an alarm is sent. *No additional charges, but please mention the software type on your order. - 16 -

3. Installation 2. Set the detection sensitivity The sensor normally detects when the patient leaves the bed. If an earlier alarm is required, the detection sensitivity can be set to send an alarm as soon as the patient sits on the bed edge. Adjust the timer and sensitivity 20 min 10 min 5 min 3 min 0 min 0 min 1. 2. 3. Direct the remote control towards the sensor. If a direct alarm is required (0 min.) there are two sensitivity settings: An alarm is sent when a person leaves the bed or an alarm is sent when a person sits on the edge of the bed. Press the - button until the yellow and red LEDs are on. If a time sequence is allowed press the + button to increase the timer or the - button to decrease the timer. After each time the button has been pressed the current configuration is shown by the LEDs. Please refer to the picture as shown on the left. IMPORTANT! The timer does not take possible delay in the internal alarm system into account. Test In order to confirm the installation a functional test should be made. It is important that the person who performs the test is alone in the room, since the sensor is developed for situations when only one person is present. Please perform the functional test as described on page 18. If the test does not turn out well, the sensor has to be restarted and the bed zone reconfigured. See further chapter 7, Troubleshooting. - 17 -

3. Installation Functional test 1. Turn off the sensor and set the timer to 3 min. 2. Lay down in bed. 3. Turn on the sensor (press the ON/OFF button) Green LED is turned on. 4. Wait until the light intensity of the green LED decreases (this takes about 15 sec). 5. Leave the bed. When the sensor has detected you, the red LED starts to flash. 6. Lay down in bed again. When the sensor has registered that you are back in bed the red LED stops to flash. 7. Repeat point 2 to 6, if possible, for the other side of the bed. 8. Repeat point 2 to 5 but this time make sure that you do not return to the bed. 9. The sensor will send an alarm to the internal alarm system after 3 minutes. When an alarm has been sent, the red LED will change from flashing to solid red. 10. Turn off the sensor with the ON/OF button (the green LED is turned off). 11. Set the timer to 0 min with increased sensitivity (sitting on the edge of the bed posi tion on the remote control. 12. Lay down in bed. Press the ON/OFF button. 13. Wait until the light intensity of the green LED decreases (this takes about 15 sec). 14. Sit down on the bed edge. 15. Make sure that the alarm is sent. 16. Turn off the sensor. 17. The functional test is finished. Note! It is advised to register the funcitonal tests in a log-book. - 18 -

4. Using the sensor Activate and deactivate the sensor The sensor is activated by directing the remote control towards the sensor and pressing the red ON/OFF button. When the sensor is activated the green LED is lit. The sensor should be activated after the patient has been helped to bed, right before the caregiver leaves the room. In order to give the caregiver a chance to leave the room without triggering a false alarm there is a delay of 10 seconds before the sensor is activated. The sensor is activated by pressing the red button. When the sensor is activated, the green LED is lit. The sensor should be deactivated when the caregiver enters the room. Otherwise the sensor will be activated and trigger a false alarm. Therefor it is advised to have the remote control near the entrance of the room. Deactivate the sensor before helping the patient. Otherwise the caregiver will trigger a false alarm. Remember! When the sensor is active a green LED is lit. - 19 -

4. Using the sensor An alarm is sent The countdown of the timer (see chapter 3) is started when the patient leaves the bed. The red LED flashes during the countdown. When the patient leaves the bed a countdown is started. If the patient has not returned to the bed before the time has elapsed an alarm is sent. If the patient returns to the bed before the timer has elapsed the sensor will return to its normal mode, the red LED will stop flashing and no alarm is sent. However, if the patient does not return to the bed and the time elapses, an alarm is sent and the red LED changes from flashing to solid. NOTE! As long as the red led is blinking, the out of bed mode is active. The patient leaves the bed. flashing red, solid green The patient returns to bed within the specified time. The patient does not return to bed within the specified time. No alarm is sent. solid green An alarm is sent to the care personnel. solid red NOTE! When a direct alarm is needed (0 min.), the sensor sensitivity can either be set to send an alarm when the patient leaves the bed or when the patient sits on the bed edge. - 20 -

4. Using the sensor After an alarm has been sent When an alarm is received, the following procedure should be followed: 1. Deactivate the sensor by pressing the ON/OF button (the red LED is turned off) 2. Help the patient 3. If the sensor should be reactivated, press the ON/OFF button (green LED is lit) The procedure is always: deactivate the sensor when entering the room, and activate the sensor just before leaving the room, if the alarm should be activated. If the sensor is not deactivated after an alarm, it will automatically activate after 4 minutes. Deactivate after an alarm An alarm has been sent Turn off the sensor. When an alarm has been sent you should first deactivate the sensor, thereafter the patient should be helped and finally the sensor should be activated just before leaving the room The sensor is turned off. solid red ON/OFF button All LEDs turned off. 4. Using the sensor Second output contact The SecNurse offers standard a second output contact that can be used for different applications. It is not mandatory to connect this output. Out of bed mode The out of bed mode implicates that the sensor offers a second contact. This contact can be used according to the individual needs of a patient. For example to switch a light when the patient leaves his or her bed. Or it can be connected to the existing nurse call system, resulting in a notification to the staff that a patient has left his or her bed but is not in an alarm situation. Armed mode As an alternative, there is additional software optional* available, the armed mode. For some situations it is needed that the SecNurse gives a contact (armed mode) to the nurse call system so that the nurse call system knows the sensor is switched on. (The armed mode will make use of this second output contact and will therefor replace the out of bed mode option). *If you require the armed mode software please mention this clearly on your purchase order. - 22 -

5. Consider the following Situations resulting in an alarm The sensor detects when the patient leaves the bed. If the patient has not returned to the bed before the timer has elapsed, an alarm will be sent to the care personnel via the internal alarm system. The shortest time is 0 min, which means that an alarm is sent instantly. Intended target group The product is intended for patients who run a risk of injury when they are alone. The sensor has two sensitivities, either it sends an alarm when the patient has left the bed or when the patient sits on the bed edge. Prerequisities - Correct installation In order to detect when the patient leaves the bed, the sensor has to be correctly installed, i.e. placed at correct height, horizontally mounted, connected to the alarm system, the bed zone configured and the timer set correctly. - The sensor should only be activated when the patient is alone in the room The sensor sends an alarm when a person is detected beside the bed. It is therefore important that the sensor is deactivated as soon as the caregiver enters the room, in order not to get unnecessary alarms. - Correct timer and sensitivity settings The sensor has two detection sensitivities, either an alarm is sent when the patient leaves the bed or as soon as the patient sits on the bed edge. The first sensitivity has five different timer settings, 20 min, 10 min, 5 min, 3 min and 0 min. The timer is started when the patient is detected beside the bed and if the patient has not returned to the bed before the timer has elapsed an alarm will be sent. The second sensitivity sends an alarm as soon as the patient is detected on the bed edge, i.e. 0 min. - 23 -

5. Consider the following Interfering factors The following factors will interfere the sensor s ability to detect correctly. In order to get the detection performance as good as possible, the following factors should be avoided. - Dark or fleecy clothes at night In dark conditions the detection is done with the assistance of infra red light. Some clothes, mainly dark or fleecy, absorbs this type of light, which will result in a lower detection performance. - TV The sensor contains optics and is therefore sensitive to significant light changes. The performance will be lower if there is a TV set turned on and close to the bed. It is recommended to place the TV further than 1,5 m from the bed at the same time as the sensor is activated. - Objects blocking the patient In order to detect when the patient leaves the bed, it is important that there are no obstacles between the patient and the sensor. Even a small piece of furniture that only blocks the patient to a certain extent will decrease the detection performance. A large bedside table close to the bed will block the field of view for the sensor and the detection performance will be decreased. - 24 -

6. Maintenance Clean the sensor The sensor should be cleaned with a damp cloth. Do not use any kind of cleaning product. Please handle the sensor with care and prevent the optics from being scratched. Test once a week Once a week a sensor test should be made according to the functional test on page 18. Advised is to perform this test both in dark and bright light. IMPORTANT! A test should be made once a week. - 25 -

7. Troubleshouting Self-learning error function Red LED is lit and yellow LED is flashing Possible cause: - The sensor is covered by an object. - The bed or sensor has been moved. - The IR LEDs do not work. If the sensor detects one of the above mentioned situations, an alarm will be sent automatically. This is indicated by a flashing yellow LED and a solid red LED. Solution: - Remove any blocking obstacles from the sensor s field of view. - Check if the bed or the sensor has been moved and put the sensor or the bed back into place. - Reconfigure the bed zone, see chapter 3, Installation. - If the problems still exist, please contact your installer. Red LED is lit and green LED is flashing The sensor has a built-in function for finding software errors when the sensor is activated. In order to repair these errors automaticly, the sensor has to be shut down for a couple of seconds. Since there is a possibility that the patient leaves the bed during these seconds, an alarm will be sent. This type of alarm is indicated by a fixed red LED and a flashing green LED. Deactivate and activate the sensor with the ON/OFF button. - 26 -

7. Troubleshooting Red LED flashes rapidly after activation If the red LED starts to flash rapidly just after you tried to activate the sensor, the bed zone has not been configured properly. Possible errors: - Wrong corners have been configured. - Both of the corners have been configured as wall/head. Please reconfigure the bed zone according to chapter 3, Installation. Yellow, red and green LED flash The sensor is defect. Please contact your installer. The sensor does not send an alarm In extreme situations it can happen that the sensor does not detect when the patient leaves the bed or sits on the bed edge. If this happens repeatedly the following could be done: 1. Configure the bed zone (see chapter 3, Installation). 2. Check if the time is set correctly (see chapter 3, Installation). 3. Move away pieces of furniture placed nearby the bed (see chapter 5, Consider the following). 4. Move away the TV or any other light source near the bed (see chapter 5, Consider the following). 5. Change clothes (see chapter 5, Consider the following). Another possible reason is that a prior alarm has not been confirmed and the sensor has not been reactivated. - 27 -

7. Troubleshooting The sensor sends false alarms In the rare case that the sensor sends a false alarm the following could be done: 1. Configure the bed zone (see chapter 3) 2. Check if the timer and sensitivity settings is correct (see chapter 3) Note! A long timer setting gives the sensor more time to take the decision, which will reduce the risk of false alarms. 3. Move away pieces of furniture placed nearby the bed (see chapter 5) 4. Move away the TV or any other light source near the bed (see chapter 5) Problems when configuring the bed zone If the sensor can not register the configuration points by the remote control the reasons may be following: 1. The remote control was not directed towards the sensor, or was not kept still 2. The sensor is not mounted correctly (see chapter 3) 3. The batteries in the remote control are low If the sensor does not react at all when the room/foot or wall/head button is pressed (red LED does not flash), the remote control batteries are probably low and has to be replaced. - 28 -
