February 16, 2012 Slidell Memorial Hospital Founders Medical Building Founders Conference Room 1150 Robert Blvd Slidell, Louisiana Registration Program 8:00 am 8:30 am 12 noon Program Description / Target Group Cardiovascular Nursing is a constantly changing field impacted by emerging research findings and new technologies. This continuing nursing education activity is designed to provide an overview of current evidence-based practice related to prevention and interventions for coronary artery, peripheral vascular, and venous diseases. Registered nurses involved in the direct care of adults with cardiovascular conditions will benefit from this update. Objectives At the end of this education offering, the participant should be able to: 1. Discuss evidence based practice for secondary prevention and risk reduction in individuals with coronary artery disease and other arteriosclerotic conditions. 2. Review the trends in coronary artery revascularization, with emphasis on percutaneous coronary intervention and coronary artery bypass surgery. 3. Describe the emerging cellular therapies for the treatment of coronary and peripheral vascular conditions, including stem cells and genetics. 4. Discuss outcomes related to venous interventions, such as endovascular laser therapy, ablation, and sclerotherapy with implications for nursing. Lab Value Interpretation: Normals and Abnormals with Implications for Best Practice March 9, 2012 North Oaks Medical Center Diagnostic Center E. Brent Dufreche Conference Center, Room A 15837 Paul Vega MD Drive Hammond, Louisiana Registration Program 8:00 am 8:30 am 12 noon Program Description / Target Group This continuing nursing educational activity will provide Registered Nurses with current information on the care of adult patients with regard to laboratory values. Laboratory values will include specific tests related to hematology, coagulopathy, glucose metabolism, and liver function. Participants will review normal, abnormal, and critical laboratory values as well as their implications during care. Emphasis will be on evidenced based practice approaches to nursing care through case studies. Objectives At the end of this education offering, the participant should be able to: 1. Interpret CBC results as it relates to infection and anemia including discussion of MCV, MCH,and RDW. 2. Discuss the utilization of laboratory testing to assess the risk of adults for insulin resistance as it relates to diabetes. 3. Distinguish between normal and abnormal laboratory tests to assess thyroid function. 4. Describe the management of the bleeding patient based on evaluation of CBC and coagulation laboratory test results to determine appropriate blood product replacement. 5. Discuss key nursing implications of abnormal lab values. 6. Apply evidence based practices guidelines related to abnormal laboratory values to nursing care. Cancer: What Now? April 27, 2012 St. Tammany Parish Hospital Mandeville/Covington Rooms 1202 South Tyler Street Covington, Louisiana Registration Program 8:00 am 8:30 am 12 noon Program Description / Target Group This program is designed to update the nurse s knowledge and skill in caring for patients with cancer. Common care issues as side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy will be explored as well as emergency situations. Nursing interventions based on oncology standards are addressed. Also discussed will be the latest research and treatment plans for diagnosis and treatment options. Participants will enhance their expertise and confidence when addressing the psychological impact of cancer on patients and their families in any setting. Objectives: At the end of this education offering, the participant should be able to: 1. Review cancer screening recommendations for common cancers. 2. Summarize current treatment options for today s cancer patient. 3. Explore new treatment modalities available in Clinical trials. 4. Describe the effects of cancer treatments on body systems and management through prevention, nursing interventions and education. 5. Recognize major emergency conditions in the Oncology patient and treatment plans. 6. Discuss psychosocial distress experienced by cancer patients and their families and priority interventions. Personality Pathways: A Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Workshop May 3, 2012 (Limited to 30 paid participants) Southeastern Louisiana University School of Nursing Baton Rouge, Louisiana Registration Program 8:00 am 8:30 am - 3:30 pm Program Description / Target Group This continuing nursing education conference will provide Registered Nurses with information to promote their professional growth and accomplishment of professional goals. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is the most widely used personality assessment in the world. It is frequently used in organizations to enhance interpersonal communication, promote diversity, build cohesive teams, and resolve workplace conflicts. Participants will complete the MBTI instrument to self-assess to determine their best fit personality type and explore how their type processes information, communicates, makes decisions, and manages time. Additionally, participants will examine their strengths and potential growth areas and learn how their type interacts with others in the workplace. The workshop is comprised of lecture, voluntary sharing or self-disclosure, and experiential exercises. The overall goal is to Improve communications, increase productivity, and promote the appreciation of individual differences. Objectives At the end of the offering, the participants should be able to: 1. Verify their best fit type. 2. Identify key elements of the 16 personality types. 3. Identify their type s strengths and areas for growth. 4. Identify how their type responds to organizational change and stress. 5. List potential causes of conflict and miscommunication among differing personality types. 6. Create a personal plan for the effective consideration of personality type in achieving the individual s overall professional goals.
