Eastern Washington Medical-Dental Health Summit III THURSDAY MARCH 3, 2016 Community Health VIP Reception Three Rivers Convention Center: 5:30-7:30 pm FRIDAY MARCH 4, 2016 Medical Dental Summit Integrating Medicine and Dentistry, 8:00 am 5:00 pm Three Rivers Convention Center Saturday March 5, 2016 Dental Oncology: Introduction to Dental Oncology, 8:00 am 5:00 pm EVENT SUMMARY FRIDAY MARCH 4, 2016 Three Rivers Convention Center The Eastern Washington Medical-Dental Health Summit is a first-of-its-kind continuing education event, bringing together health professionals, hospitals, health educators, administrators and policy makers to improve health in our region. Leading authorities will present the latest research along with practical solutions that enable physicians and dentists to work together to deliver better healthcare to their patients and the community. Reports confirm that oral health lowers medical costs for all stake-holders when properly managed by physicians and dentists. New research continues to strengthen the links between the mouth and cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, kidney and lung disease, Alzheimer s and pregnancy complications. Higher standards and emerging oral-systemic science also present new challenges and concerns for medical-dental risk management. Medical and dental professionals, along with community-based health organizations in our region and across the country are beginning to integrate Medicine and Dentistry to improve patient care outcomes and control healthcare costs. Oral health assessments within medical settings, laboratory and bacterial DNA testing, professional networking, interdisciplinary collaboration, patient co-management, optimal care guidelines, and patient/public education are all part of the new protocols and awareness related to oral-systemic health. EVENT SUMMARY SATURDAY MARCH 5, 2016 The Introduction to Dental Oncology seminar will present current understandings of head and neck cancers and how dental and medical professionals currently work together to treat patients with cancer. Dental health professionals will be qualified to give dental clearance for patients with cancer undergoing radiation and chemotherapy treatments, and will learn how to support oral health and deal with various oral side effects of cancer treatment.

Scott Kennedy MD Presentation Title: Integrating Medical and Dental Care: The Growing Imperative for Addressing Oral Health Together Synopsis: Oral health evaluations in the primary care office? Structured referrals to the dentist? What are they thinking? This session will explore dynamic factors and conditions that are moving medicine and dentistry to collaborate more closely in the patient s care. We will examine challenges and opportunities for this important growing theme of integrated medical and dental care. 1. Better understand the significance that oral health can have on overall health throughout life 2. Review and understand current factors driving medical-dental care integration, why it is important and how to develop collaboration and leadership in the community setting. 3. Better appreciate the clinical value of providing collaborative care in the area of oral health. Biographical Sketch: Scott Kennedy, M.D. is the Chief Medical Officer and Hospital Chief Operating Officer at Olympic Medical Center (OMC) in Port Angeles, Washington. He is board certified in Family Practice and has practiced in a variety of medical settings, including four years as a primary care physician and clinical director with the U.S. Public Health Service in Kotzebue, Alaska, and family medicine for eleven years in the Port Angeles area. Subsequently, he developed the Chief Medical Officer role at OMC where he serves on the Administrative Leadership Team and works closely with medical staff, oncology and surgery programs, and an array of ancillary services. Olympic Medical Center has integrated its inpatient, outpatient, home health, and laboratory services in a single electronic health record system in the past three years and provides ancillary services support to the Volunteers in Medicine of the Olympics medical and dental clinics. Dr. Kennedy serves on the Washington State Hospital Association (WSHA) Patient Safety Committee and the combined WSHA and WSMA Medical Officers Advisory Group. The Advisory Group plans safe table learning collaboratives aimed at bringing hospital and outpatient physician leadership together to advance quality and safety initiatives across our state. Dr. Kennedy also serves on the Washington Dental Services Foundation Board, a foundation whose mission is to prevent oral disease and improve overall health across Washington. He is a proponent for the continuing role of community water fluoridation as a safe and cost effective public health measure, for preventive dental care for children, and creating access to care that is patient-centered, evidence-based, and integrated across clinical disciplines. Dr. Kennedy lives with his wife, Brenda, and their five children in Port Angeles. He enjoys participating in his children s activities and traveling with family to Eastern Washington.
Kristi D. Silver M.D. Presentation Title: Diabetes and Oral Health: The Two-Way Health Continuum Synopsis: Diabetes and insulin resistance is fast becoming one of the leading health concerns in our modern world. It brings with it significant financial burden to our nation, health systems, and affected people individually and as families. Diabetes and periodontal disease share a unique relationship within the oral-systemic continuum in that each has an effect on the other and requires diligent co-management from both medical and dental health professionals, as well as informed and proactive lifestyle management including oral home care. Dental and medical health professionals can work in an interprofessional manner to understand both the science of diabetes and oral health, and the interdisciplinary co-management required to successfully help diabetic patients enjoy better health. 1. Understand the disease of diabetes and its consequences on the human body 2. Better understand the two-way health and disease relationship between diabetes and oral health. 3. Understand how insulin resistance is affected by oral inflammation burden Biographical Sketch: Dr. Silver received her MD degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and her fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Silver is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Endocrinology and Metabolism. Dr. Silver joined the faculty at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1997.
Lee Ostler DDS Presentation Title: Oral Systemic Health Update What s New and Why it Matters in Today s Healthcare Era. Synopsis: This presentation will provide the attendee with information on oral-systemic healthcare including some of the lesser known oral-systemic related conditions which are common-place in every medical and dental practice, including arthritis, obesity and Alzheimer s. Patient co-management and professional networks and how they impact patient care and wellness will be discussed. Understand the impact of some of oral-systemic health s lesser-known disease conditions and how they impact medical and dental patient management. Understand the relationship between increasingly common medical conditions such as Alzheimer s, arthritis and obesity, and oral health. Understand laboratory tests useful for determining risk factors common to medical and dental conditions, and what to do about them. Biographical Sketch: Dr Lee Ostler is a general dentist and graduate of the University of Washington School of Dentistry. He is a Board Member and Past-President of the American Academy for Oral Systemic Health and has been a recognized thought-leader in the Oral-Systemic Health movement. He is an author and software developer, providing resources that help dentists (and physicians) and their teams understand the emerging science and how to apply it in improved patient care and interdisciplinary co-management. He presents nationally and has consulted within the industry advising in matters of product development and use, education and instruction curriculum, and development of professional associations. He has been instrumental in designing and implementing policies and programs that bring regional community health programs and concerns together, which help dentists, physicians, hospitals, and community health programs better address the health needs of the public.
Dennis M. Abbott, D.D.S. / Juno Choe M.D. PhD Presentation Title: Dental Oncology: Bridging the Medical/Dental Gap for Better Patient Care Synopsis: With a diagnosis of cancer comes many questions, much anxiety, and multiple medical visits. Understandably, consideration of dental and oral health is often overlooked, but at a great expense to overall health and quality of life both during and after treatment. This presentation is designed for the health care provider to better understand why attention to oral health concerns is imperative prior to the commencement of oncology treatment. The learner will understand and appreciate the need for dentistry and oral medicine as essential elements of comprehensive cancer care for every person with cancer through introduction of some of the most common oral health challenges faced by patients undergoing treatment of cancer. The learner will understand what is meant by dental clearance and why such clearance is important in all oncology patients, but is imperative in patients whose treatment includes head and neck radiation therapy or intravenously-administered bisphosphonate therapy. The learner will have knowledge of what information should be exchanged between the dental oncologist and medical and radiation oncology team members for effective comprehensive care before, during, and after cancer therapy. Dr. Dennis Abbott - Biographical Sketch: Dennis M. Abbott, DDS is the founder and CEO of Dental Oncology Professionals (DOP), an oral medicine practice based in Dallas, Texas dedicated to care for the unique dental and oral health needs of individuals battling cancer.
