Each week will feature a pint f inquiry Citizenship, Hunger, Animal Welfare, and Envirnment. Students will have the pprtunity t take an actin during each week. Students brainstrm an actin r chse ne f the actins listed in the curriculum. Over the curse f the five weeks f SBSLP students will learn abut the fllwing five issues: 1. Cmmunity and Citizens 2. Each week students will tackle a particular prblem and wrk tgether t create a prject that is abut prmting the scial gd. Prject based learning has five primary cmpnents: 1. Begin with the End in Mind what the prduct is that yur students are wrking twards? 2. Craft the Driving Questin what d we want students t learn thrugh this prcess? 3. Plan the Assessment hw will yu assess yur students? 4. Map the Prject what steps will yu take t help students cmplete the prject? 5. Manage the Prcess hw will yu facilitate the prcess f helping students learn frm and cmplete their prject? Each week s descriptin includes infrmatin n the first tw steps. An assessment is included as an appendix t this resurce. During the next weeks we encurage yu t explre a variety f scial issues with yur students utilizing curriculum prvided by Learning t Give at www.learningtgive.rg. I. Week 1 Intrductin t Citizenship Prject: Presentatin abut Cmmunity Rles Begin with the End in Mind Students will understand what it means t have a rle in a healthy cmmunity. Driving Questin Hw can individuals cme tgether t build a strng cmmunity? Gather yur students each day fr lessns abut citizenship during the first week f summer schl. These lessns will prepare students fr issue specific explratin and service prject pprtunities during weeks 2 5 f summer schl. The first lessns will intrduce students t the cncept f cmmunity, what it is and means and what rles we play in cmmunities. While sme cnflict can be healthy, sme clearly isn t. As individuals in a cmmunity reslve cnflict, they becme strnger as a cmmunity. 2

Lessn 4 Educating Others http://learningtgive.rg/lessns/unit44/lessn4.html In this lessn, students prepare and implement a skit, presentatin, r set f visuals that will educate thers in the schl building abut basic rights and respnsibilities f cmmunity members. II. Week 2 Citizens and Issues: Hunger Prject: Fd Drive Begin with the End in Mind Students will understand what it means t experience hunger and respnd effectively t the prblem f hunger. Driving Questin Hw can individuals make a difference in the prblem f hunger? During this week s fcus n hunger, students will examine what hunger lks like and what individuals and grups can d t address the prblem f hunger. Students will als wrk tward cmpletin f their prject a schl wide fd drive, which can be intrduced in Lessn 7. The schl wide fd drive will take 2 3 weeks t advertise and gather fd items. Students shuld be rganized t take n the fllwing rles: Identify a lcal fd pantry r distributin center Create psters and make annuncements abut the fd drive Encurage adults and students in the building t participate in the drive Develp a plan t gather fd items fr dnatin t the fd pantry The web based curricular resurce used in this sectin is Feeding Minds, Fighting Hunger: A Wrld Free frm Hunger http://www.feedingminds.rg/fmfh/hme/en/. It will als cnsider thse individuals wh are at the greatest risk f suffering frm wrld hunger. They will explre the three pillars f fd security and why these are necessary t ensure a healthy life. 3

It prvides students with the pprtunity t understand the cncept f hunger arund the wrld by using an interactive map. Week 3 Citizens and Issues: Animal Welfare Prject: Pster Campaign abut Animal Welfare Text: Buddy Unchained Begin with the End in Mind Students will understand hw animals are cared fr in urban cmmunities. Driving Questin What des it take t make sure that animals are cared fr successfully? Our third area f inquiry will be animal welfare. Week 4 Citizens and Issues: The Envirnment Prject: Fd Waste Recmmendatins Begin with the End in Mind Students will learn abut hw much fd is wasted that culd be diverted ut f the slid waste stream. Driving Questin Why d Americans waste s much fd and can we slw the waste? During the final week, students will explre the envirnmental prblem f fd waste. Americans waste 11 billin punds f fd each year. An estimate f fd waste frm Texas suggests that Americans thrw away 25% f ur edible fd. This week students will examine fd waste in their schl cafeteria and develp recmmendatins fr schl leadership abut hw fd waste can be minimized.
