If yu have nt been infrmed by yur mentr r cach as t when yu will be getting yur bks, check the Curse Materials list in Help. If yur curse has required materials, they will be used in the curse. Certain subjects require special equipment. Mathematics. A graphing calculatr is recmmended and, is required abve Algebra 1. Science. Curse Duratin ALVS curse semesters have a 9 (summer) r 18 (fall, spring) week standard duratin. Students taking a single semester in a: Cre pathway curse can expect t spend between 70-90 hurs in the curse; Hnrs pathway curse can expect t spend between 90-120 hurs in the curse; AP* curse can expect t spend between 120-150 hurs in the curse; Tip: While students are allwed t wrk ahead f schedule, accelerated cmpletins can create decreased quality f wrk and are subject t review and interventin by ALVS teachers and administratrs. One f the biggest benefits f nline curses is that students can take them n a flexible schedule. The best way t ensure success is t spread the wrk ut, ding sme every day, rather than leaving everything twards the end f the curse. *AP and Advanced Placement are registered trademarks f the Cllege Bard. Cmmunicating with Yur Teacher and Others Yur ALVS teachers will cmmunicate with yu via email, the Message Center, phne cnversatins, and/r nline cnferencing. ALVS teachers will answer yur cntent questins, respnding typically within 24 hurs during weekdays. Emailing Yur Teacher and sending ntes thrugh the Message Center Students have a Messages page fr cmmunicating with teachers and submitting assignment activities. 1. On the My Dashbard, click the New Message buttn (+ sign). A New Message dialg pens. 2. Use the drpdwn list t select a teacher t cntact. 3. Enter a subject and yur message. 4. Click the Send buttn. The dialg clses and a cpy f yur message is displayed n the Messages screen. Best Practice: In ALL f yur cmmunicatins include the Fllwing: Yur Name Yur Curse Name Yur Curse Sectin Number Yur curse and sectin number will enable yur teacher t access yur infrmatin quickly and efficiently. Be cncise, clear in yur questins, and be sure t refer t activity numbers as apprpriate t help yur teacher identify where yu are having prblems. Page 7 f 20

Netiquette Netiquette is a wrd t describe the d's and dn'ts f nline cmmunicating. Basic curtesy and cmmn sense are generally the rule f the day when cmmunicating whether it is face-t-face r thrugh the Internet. Tip: Just as in persn, knw yur audience and the peple in which yu are speaking. What yu pst and view can fllw yu, and if yu are nt careful, yur nline interactins can have a negative impact n yur life. Make sure the digital ftprint yu leave behind is a step frward rather than a step backward. Yu agree t abide by these guidelines: Avid slang r textese. (Textese is the use f u instead f yu in a sentence). Avid dergatry cmments, including thse regarding race, age, gender, sexual rientatin, religin, ability, plitical persuasin, bdy type, physical r mental health, r access issues. Avid sarcasm, insults, threats r attacks f any kind against anther persn. Fcus yur respnses n the tpic being discussed, nt n the individuals invlved. Prfread and review yur messages and remve easily misinterpreted language. Teacher Virtual Office Hurs Teachers hst Office Hurs fr live instructin by telephne, message center, and nline cnferencing. Check yur teacher s prfile fr details abut his r her availability. Thrughut each semester, yu are asked t meet nline r speak by phne with yur ALVS Instructr nce per unit. Yu may decide at what pint this meeting ccurs within each unit but yu will need t crdinate a time and date t meet. Online Discussins Online discussins prvide yu the pprtunity t see what ther students have t say abut the lessns, helping clarify yur wn understanding, with yu in turn, helping add t smene else's. Online discussins als help yu express yur pinins n given tpics. Take the time t think thrugh yur respnses. Generate at least a five-sentence respnse t the initial tpic, and at least three sentences replying t a peer s cmments. Avid "e-slang" habits f eliminating punctuatin r substituting letters fr wrds. Use the frum t exercise yur cmpsitin skills. Full credit is awarded fr tw psts in each discussin thread. If yu are the nly student in a curse, yur teacher can prvide alternatives fr nline discussins answering tw questins nline, submitting in dcument frm, r having phne cnversatins. Yur teacher will prvide these details as apprpriate. ALVS teachers have different schedules fr grading discussins, but all teachers will read psts at least nce a week. Yur teacher will let yu knw his r her schedule fr discussin scring. Tip: Even if yu cmplete the discussin n r befre the due date, until yur teacher has reviewed the cntent, the activity may appear as verdue. (See Grades and Grade Reprt Terminlgy) Page 8 f 20

Activities: ULA s Unit Lessn Activities Reference Apex Learning activities numerically, by the Unit Lessn Activity (ULA) number. Becme familiar with the terminlgy, as yu will be using ULA s in submissin and crrespndence. Curse Calendar Unit 1, Lessn 2, Activity 3 is called 1.2.3. Unit 5, Lessn 2, Activity 8 5.2.8 The curse calendar will shw yu a schedule-fr-cmpletin. Listed are ULA (Unit Lessn Activity) numbers n specific dates, designed t keep yu n schedule. Best Practice: When yu cmplete an activity, it will n lnger appear in the calendar. Checking the calendar daily will give yu a gd lk at what needs t be dne. Wrking Ahead Yu are mre than welcme t wrk ahead. The cntent is designed fr a traditinal academic semester, but yu may have mre wrk time in a day. Teacher-Scred Tests are blcked until three days befre mst students wuld access. If yu plan t test early, cntact yur teacher t request a due date change. Tip: Check yur due dates in relatin t planned absences and hliday schedules. If yur final exam is scheduled during a planned absence r hliday break, plan t test befre yur break. If yu are scheduled fr an AP Exam, try t finish yur AP prep curse befre the first week in May. Submitting Hmewrk There are tw kinds f assignments t be cmpleted. Cmputer scred activities, which yu can cmplete nline, and teacher scred activities and tests, which can be, printed and then electrnically submitted Sme f yur Apex Learning assignments will be graded by yur teacher. There are many ptins fr preparing assignment respnses fr submissin t yur teacher. It may be easiest fr yu and yur teacher if the respnses yu create are digital files. Hwever, fr thse activities that require yu t shw yur wrk, draw graphs, enter frmulas, r create illustratins, using a cmputer prgram t cmplete yur assignment may be challenging. In these cases, the simplest way t create yur submissin will be t print the assignment and handwrite yur answers. Apex Learning has deplyed pwerful slutins t facilitate the submissin f yur hmewrk. This sectin will discuss the mechanics f creating bth digital and handwritten hmewrk submissins. Best Practice: Fr electrnic tracking: Hmewrk Must Be Submitted thrugh the Message Center r faxed. Only handwritten files need t be faxed; wrd-prcessed files and scanned cpies are mre quickly handled by uplading and submitting them thrugh the Message Center. Cmmn wrd prcessing applicatins include Wrd, Open Office, and Pages. Page 9 f 20

Preparing handwritten hmewrk If yu chse t create a handwritten hmewrk submissin, fllw these steps t print yur hmewrk file. Cmplete yur assignment, and then fllw the instructins belw fr faxing r scanning yur assignment fr submissin t yur teacher. Yu can always add additinal pages t yur hmewrk submissin if yu need additinal rm t cmplete the assignment. Nte: Ensure yu write legibly and in dark print. When yu submit yur cmpleted assignment, yu must ensure yur teacher can read it! If yur teacher cannt pen r read yur submissin, he r she will reply with FILE ERROR added t the subject line. It will be yur respnsibility t slve the prblem f transmissin. All assignment wrksheets can be cpied int a wrd prcessing dcument frm and answers typed int directly. Save yur file t a remvable strage device (flash drive, etc.) and name it apprpriately. Fr example, Unit 5, Lessn 2, Activity 8 r 5.2.8 in rder t assist yur teacher in knwing which assignment is being submitted. Uplading a dcument r audi file Assignments, which yu cmplete as electrnic files (e.g. wrd prcessr dcuments, sund recrdings, scanned dcuments), must be submitted t yur instructr by uplading the files t Message Center. This prcess is similar t sending a message t yur teacher in the Message Center. T submit an electrnic file t yur instructr, first create a new message. Select the Submit Hmewrk checkbx t shw submissin ptins. Using the drp-dwn menus that appear, select the Sectin (curse) and Activity f the assignment yu are submitting. Then, click the Brwse buttn and select the file t uplad. Page 10 f 20

Nte: Message Center allws yu t attach a variety f file types t yur messages: Fr ther files, r technical help, call Supprt 800-453-1454 t Cntact ALVS Services fr directins. After selecting the file t uplad, the path and filename will appear in the File bx. T send the message and attached file t yur teacher, click the Send buttn. As with nrmal messages t yur teacher, a cpy f the message will be placed in the Message Center list. Yu can use the list t view yur previus messages, including any attached assignments. Page 11 f 20

Scanning a handwritten dcument fr uplad If yu have a scanner and apprpriate sftware, then yu may scan and uplad a handwritten dcument instead f faxing it. Hwever, yu must strictly fllw these rules when scanning yur dcuments: Multiple pages must be saved in a single file as a multi-page PDF. Images must be clearly visible, black and white, nt grayscale r clr. Image reslutin must be 100 DPI (dts per inch). Each page must be apprximately 1730 pixels wide by 2220 pixels high (1730x2220). Each file's size must be 400 KB (kilbytes) r less. One and nly ne assignment may be included in a single file. Yu must preview each file t be sure it is legible and that it includes all pages f the assignment. Once yu have a dcument image in the required frmat, yu may uplad it t yur instructr as yu wuld any ther electrnic file. Remember t name it apprpriately; fr example, Unit 5, Lessn 2, Activity 8 r 5.2.8 in rder t assist yur teacher in knwing which assignment is being submitted. Faxing an assignment dcument Sme assignments must be handwritten. These assignments may be faxed t yur instructr. Each faxed assignment must use the prefrmatted cver page that we prvide. Hw d I print a fax cver sheet? 1. Open yur curse and navigate t the activity yu are submitting. 2. Click the Fax icn in the upper right crner f the windw. a. The cver sheet pens in a new windw. 3. Use the web brwser's print ptin menu t print the cver sheet. Page 12 f 20

The example cver page belw is fr activity 1.4.2 nly. It cannt be used fr any ther activity! Place the fax cver page at the beginning f yur assignment. Fax the dcument t the phne number indicated n the cver page. Faxed dcuments will be cnverted t a TIFF image similar t thse described in the Scanning a handwritten dcument fr uplad sectin f this dcument. The fax image will be sent t yur instructr as if yu had upladed a file. A cpy f the message and the attached fax image will be placed in yur Message Center. Nte: Each assignment activity requires an individual and unique Activity Fax Cver Sheet. The printable page is cded t each individual Student, curse, activity, and teacher, ruting the paper electrnically t the teacher. D nt discard written r electrnic wrk until yu receive the scred file back frm yur teacher. If yur teacher cannt pen r read yur submissin, he r she will reply with FILE ERROR added t the subject line. It will be yur respnsibility t slve the prblem f transmissin. FAQ: I printed a wrksheet s I culd handwrite my answers but I need t submit my wrk digitally. Can t I just take a picture with my phne instead f scanning r faxing? One slutin is t use yur smartphne and an image app such as CamScanner t phtgraph each page f yur assignment and submit them as a single dcument. Due Dates Curse Activity Scres Reprt The Curse Activity Scres Reprt allws students t quickly see infrmatin abut all activities within a curse. Due dates fr all activities are in yur Activity Scres Reprt. Yu can see the full list by clicking n the number grade that will appear n the Dash Bard. Access: My Dashbard screen > Curses area > Click Grade t Date percent. Befre any activities are due, yu can access that list as fllws: Select Actins; click n View Prgress Reprt. Lk fr the clumn Activity Scres and Due Dates. Click n View. Print ut the reprt, and keep it handy. These are target dates t keep yu mving frward. Mst imprtant are the Unit Test due dates. A few imprtant ntes: Assignments are nt cnsidered cmplete until they are graded. If yu have submitted hmewrk, and yur teacher has nt yet reviewed it, the system will regard the activity as Overdue r Nt Yet Scred. Once the activity is scred, it will be added int the grade bk and the numbers will refresh. Submitted assignments are graded and returned within 3 days. There is n need t check n a submissin until 3 schl days have passed. The Quality f Wrk grade reflects nly the scres f wrk that has been graded. If yu wrk n time, the Quality f Wrk grade is likely representative f yur actual perfrmance. Hwever, the calculatin can be misleading if yu are cnsistently late with wrk. The Grade t Date is calculated based n pints earned cmpared t pints pssible. Hence, if an assignment has been submitted n r befre the due date, but has nt yet been scred, the Grade t Date will fill in a zer. Once the wrk is apprpriately scred and the calendar day passed, the Grade t Date will refresh. Yur final letter grade will reflect the Grade t Date.
