New York City Guide: The Dual City Summer Sessions New York City and London are vibrant urban centers that share in their abundance of learning opportunities in art and design. The existing industries of architecture, fashion, finance, and education provide students with exceptional models to study as well as experience, first hand. Where better to plug into this energy, view the latest trends and collaborate with fellow students in art and design thinking while building a new network of contacts from around the world? The New School A pioneer in art and design education since its founding in 1896, Parsons has cultivated outstanding artists, designers, scholars, business people and community leaders for more than a century. Today, when design thinking is increasingly being employed to solve complex global problems, Parsons is leading new approaches to art and design education. At Parsons, a diverse community of students develop critical thinking skills and apply them to real world challenges. Through a network of interconnected design laboratories, students explore global phenomena at multiple sites and scales of engagement, from on campus research initiatives to international partnerships that affect change in New York and around the world. In an increasingly designed world, art and design reflects and shapes our experiences. Through rigorous practice and critical scholarship, Parsons prepares students to be leaders in their professions and society. http://www.newschool.edu/parsons/ 1
Independent Travel Students are responsible for booking their own travel arrangements. We recommend you do this soon after you have received your final confirmation of your booking (about four weeks before the course starts) to ensure that you find the best price at the time you want to fly. Some carriers allow cheap one-way fares and returns from other destinations without supplements (good to know, if you want to visit other countries after your course). Travel between New York and London is fiercely competitive and there are often special offers for flights from different airlines, so check directly with you your travel agent or airlines directly for the best deals. Transatlantic flights leaving from JFK or Newark airports are approximately 6-7 hours, depending on the prevailing winds. Search these flight comparison websites for the best ticket prices: www.kayak.com google.com/flights If you are planning to stay on in Europe and visit other countries after your course ends, you can check one-way or multi-city destination options on the websites of most airline alliances such as One World https://www.oneworld.com/flights/single-continent-fares/visit-europe and Travelocity http://www.travelocity.com/flights Arrivals New York has three main airports, two of which operate transatlantic flights to/from London: John F. Kennedy (JFK) and Newark (EWR) and LaGuardia (LGA). Details of these ports of entry and how to navigate your way around them and into the city by ground transportation, can be found at the official Port Authority of New York website: http://www.mta.info/ We recommend you use public transportation such as the subway or local buses to reach your location. Traveling around New York An urban giant at the crossroads of the world, if you can t do it here you probably can t do it anywhere; more has happened in Manhattan than in any comparable city in the world in the last hundred years. Iconic buildings and landmarks, a dynamic work hard/play hard attitude and a palpable excitement in the air of opportunity still pervades and keeps this city on top of the creative community s global radar. Make it easy on yourself and do your homework: plan your journeys by subway, bus and local trains through the MTA (Metropolitan Transit Authority). Metrocard passes allow you to travel quickly, cheaply and transfer easily between subway and buses. They may be purchased in subway stations at automated kiosks. Parsons values the unique perspective each student brings to the program and the academic richness of a culturally diverse student body. Registration deadlines and visas International students can apply for an I-20 (F-1) or DS- 2019 (J-1) from our office of International Student Services (ISS). A link to the online International Student Application Packet will be sent to students in their course confirmation letter a few weeks after registration on the Dual City course. This packet includes information about applying for the I- 20 or DS-2019 from The New School, which is required before you apply for the appropriate visa from the U.S. embassy or consulate in your home country. Because the approval process for student visas can be lengthy, students should submit their I- 20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1) applications to ISS by April 15 2016. In order to meet these deadlines, we recommend that international students must register by April 1, 2016.
